Ryan Air Debate

Needafriend14 · 12/03/2025 11:40

Myself and a friend are going away for the weekend next. We are flying with Ryan Air. And have both decided to take the small 'bag under seat'. The question we are debating is: can you have an additional small shoulder bag that you can carry onto the plane ?I said surely it must be allowed but she is adamant that it is not allowed.that hand bags have to be squeezed into this back pack. It doesn't give any information on the web site. Plus I am getting different opinions from different friends.
Thanks in advance.

@rosemarble

Years and years of practice!

TBF, I don't wear make up, I have very short hair, don't even own a hairbrush/comb and my skincare "regime" is a bit of moisturiser so that doesn't take up much room.

It also cuts down on spending whilst away. If it won't fit in the rucksack/is >100ml then it isn't coming home.

One tip (that I think I may have read on MN) is to take stuff that is at the end of its usefullness (eg t-shirts, sandals) and then get rid of it while you are there to make space for any new purchases.

Roll don't fold!

Your friend is right. Last time I flew Ryanair there was a staff member going around the gate examining people. I did have a small handbag for phone/wallet/passport but I had to, as I expected, put it into my backpack and close for the moment of handing over the boarding pass. (I took it out again immediately after with no problems.)

I "wear" a small cross body bag and they've never queried that, but it is tiny, the size of a pocket really.

Hayley1256 · 12/03/2025 14:27

Not allowed, i got round this buy buying something feom duty free and putting my handbag in the duty free bag. I was just going to keep it under my jacket.

Edited to add that I always just add 1 item of hold luggage now as I hated not been able to buy things!

I have done that. I bought a mascara and asked for a large duty free bag. However, as mentioned by a pp they get wise to this and look inside duty free bags!

How do you manage to pack for a whole trip with just an under seat bag?

I don't know why you'd need more for a weekend?

I love travelling very light, it reduces chores around a trip, washing, packing, organising, to next to nothing. For a weekend you need a couple of clean tops and some undies surely?. I decant toiletries into tiny pots and have a clear bag filled with them ready to go.

Needafriend14 · 12/03/2025 16:28

Thank you all so much, really appreciate all your replies. The body bag is an excellent idea. I will probably go with this as I need an inhaler. But watch this knowing Ryan Air I'll probably get caught and have to pay another 45 quid. Ive been sting before with this airline.

I've been known to stick a small bag up my jumper for boarding...

Oh it’s not about the rules, I’m happy to comply with them. It’s just the general overall experience. Tiny seats and not much room, they don’t even have a pocket in the back of the seat in front anymore to store things like my kindle or water bottle. They used to make a big deal about arriving on time but the last few Ryan Air flights I’ve been on have been delayed. I’ll use them if there isn’t another option, but I much prefer easyjet and a couple of other European budget airlines these days.

The banning of small bags is just naked gouging, which is why it annoys me. That bag takes up no space at all and is inconveniencing no one. I get that once you say yes to a tiny bag it’s a matter of judgement how big a handbag can get until it’s a second full bag. But I find it depressingly mean nonetheless so I avoid airlines that do it as much as I can.

Because people always push the boundaries, whatever is allowed people want more (I'm not judging)

They are budget because of these reasons. I would rather draconian rules and cheap flights.

So stop flying with them. I would only go with them if it was to see a dying friend or to a funeral, and even then would research alternatives including train from another airport to avoid them.

We figure that at some point we might get caught out, but by that point we have saved on three bags for every other trip... so it's worth the gamble.

Hang luggage only is easy, especially if travelling as a family. Really you don't need anywhere near as much stuff as people take. And no this includes fresh clothes for each day. It just requires thought and planning.

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2025 17:29

The trouble for me isn't that a 'small body bag' translates to a whacking great huge handbag for many women. A genuine body bag isn't the same and isn't what Ryanair are typically looking out for to gouge.

In fairness to Ryanair they turn a blind eye to a lot more than they confront. But that doesn't really make for good headlines.

TakingBackSunday · 12/03/2025 17:31

It's Ryanair .. they'd charge you for wearing clothes if they could.

Not allowed unfortunately.

0ctavia · 12/03/2025 17:33

It’s quite easy to fly personal item only for a wekend or even a week. Especially if you are travelling with someone else as there’s usually so much you can share .

You dont need “ travel sized toiletries “ which are usually 100ml. Things like skin care lotions, foundation etc can go in contact lens case, which is tiny. Use solid shampoo, conditioner & soap and a tiny piece will do for the weekend.

I take laundry detergent sheets cut up into tiny squares ( about the size of a Credit card ) and wash items like underwear every night, which takes about 3 mins. They will dry overnight on a heated towel rail.

I wear mostly merino clothes so they can be worn many times without washing.

PurBal · 12/03/2025 17:34

Not allowed but I've always wondered if they'd turn you away if you had tie on pockets, whilst not commonly used they are a legitimate item of clothing. So do pockets count as a bag or clothing? And why does a "bum bag" class as a bag and not a tie on pocket?

Remember that your inhaler ( or at least the cartridge ) needs to be in your small 1l plastic bag when you go through security .

Lovelysummerdays · 12/03/2025 17:37

I have a coat with poachers pockets for this sort of thing. It does weigh a tonne though when fully loaded, I once had to unpack it at X-ray as I’d put spray deodorant in. The lady was a bit amused.

I never have, and it's not been a problem for any security

You've been lucky, it’s the rules for all Uk airports . This is from the London Gatwick website, for example

Medical equipment
Inhalers are allowed in hand luggage, but you must remove them and place in a clear plastic bag to go through the scanner separately. You must pack spare canisters in your hold luggage
