I hate my cat. I did not sign up for this

3 year old male ragdoll. Bought from reputable breeder as a kitten. Researched the breed before buying. Consensus was I was signing up for a “living breathing teddy bear who will follow you everywhere”.

Reality is an unfriendly bored cat whose only aim in life is to leave his home. He has a 3 storey house to explore. Cat trees. Multiple toys. His 3 year old sister from same litter to play with. Attention all day from my grown up DS who works from home and my DH.

Did I mention I spent 4k professionally cat proofing my garden which he has access to 24/7 via a cat flap? Still not happy.Sits by front door screaming day and night to go out. Tries everything to get out the front including leaping from 2nd floor window which he did on Saturday. I’ve had enough.

Hes spent all day crying at the front door to go outside even though he has a secure back garden!!

I can’t cope with him anymore. Didn’t sign up for this. Not sure what else I can do except let him go outside the front where we have a road, a quiet road, but a road none the less. All I see on social media are ragdolls who lay around the house sleeping all day quite content.

His sister is lovely, loves her back garden & is a content little thing. He on the other hand is making the whole family miserable,

I have two ragdolls. I let them out, had them 12 years and they haven't got run over. Quiet street. One of them is still really annoying and just walks around miaowing all day relentlessly. They very rarely actually go out, only to pee and poo

H0CUSPOCUS · 11/03/2025 14:34

So what I mean is, I'd let him out

KhakiShaker · 11/03/2025 14:35

Is he happy to use his cat flap? If not, this could be something to do with it.

I have a ragdoll male, neutered and I let him out!

BurntBanana · 11/03/2025 14:37

Let him out, he’s clearly not meant to be an indoor cat.

RedHelenB · 11/03/2025 14:37

Keeping cats within a small area is cruel.

DivorcedMumOfAdults · 11/03/2025 14:37

If he hasn’t been neutered then maybe that would help?
Maybe his sister bullies him and he would happy in a new home as a solo cat

SplitEndHunter · 11/03/2025 14:37

@RedHelenB a 3 storey house and a garden is hardly the same as a bloody 3ft cage is it?!

rehome him or let him out.

cheezncrackers · 11/03/2025 14:38

You hate him? No wonder he wants to get away from you.

She didn't say it was Hmm but to a cat with a roaming instinct, it is a small space. Cats aren't meant to be confined.

Onlyvisiting · 11/03/2025 14:39

Is he neutered?
Does he get on with his sister? Cats don't always live well together at all.

She may not have told him she hates him.

She may not have told him she hates him.

She doesn't need to - cats know!

She may not have told him she hates him.

He will sense it though.

Hoppinggreen · 11/03/2025 14:43

He is not a Teddy Bear he is a living breathing creature and they don't always do what you want

EsmeShelby · 11/03/2025 14:43

Let him out as your road is quiet. Some cats just want to go out.

Catlady724 · 11/03/2025 14:46

I say let him out as well, boy cats have more of a roaming instinct even if neutered (I’m assuming he is as he lives with a female cat, sister or not!). If he’s miserable inside then let him have his freedom, better a happy life with a small risk of accident than a miserable but safe life inside. I know he has the back garden but he obviously doesn’t care for it, they don’t think like we do.

mathanxiety · 11/03/2025 14:49

Has he been neutered?

Marinel · 11/03/2025 14:49

You say he is driving everyone mad, you 'hate' him, and he is miserable and frustrated - so why wouldn't you let him roam?

The road is quiet so he will probably be fine but - putting it bluntly - if he does come to grief you are not going to be heartbroken about it, and he will have had the opportunity to have the life he wants.

thismummydrinksgin · 11/03/2025 14:50

Let him out! Get a GPs tracker or something.

MidnightMeltdown · 11/03/2025 14:50

Is he neutered? Males often lose their interest in wandering once neutered.

We can swap if you like. Mine has a cat flap and the whole wide world to explore but hardly ever goes out. He prefers to follow me around the house all day when I'm at home. It can get annoying! He's not a ragdoll either.

OriginalUsername2 · 11/03/2025 14:53

Another vote for neuter and let him out. He’s not trying to be an arsehole, he’s just living on instinct!

possumtea · 11/03/2025 14:53

Keeping cats cooped up is cruel. Hope you find him a better home or you let him out and he can find one himself.

Mightymoog · 11/03/2025 14:55

Why on earth aren't you letting him out then?
Poor sod.

and this is frankly depressing
All I see on social media are ragdolls who lay around the house sleeping all day quite content.

Just get a cuddly toy if you can't be bothered with a proper cat who wants to run and play properly

Horrace · 11/03/2025 14:57

I've never understood people keeping cats trapped inside. It's not natural. It's cruel.
