What’s the worst beauty tip you’ve ever received?

Inspired by the “what is the best beauty tip you’ve received” thread, I wonder about the opposite….

What is the most useless, unhelpful beauty tip you have ever received?

I’m torn between being advised to sit in the sun with tomato ketchup in my hair years ago to bring out the highlights (it didn’t and was v sticky), and the first time I fake tanned but didn’t know to wear mitts when applying and ended up with conker coloured palms for 2 weeks.

That anyone can 'train' their hair to go longer between by washes by not washing it as much. No, some people just have a hair type that needs washing every 2-3 days, and that's fine

TheProvincialLady · 08/03/2025 17:13

On MN about 15 years ago there was a craze for using castor oil to clean your face. Probably because people had some left over after being advised to use it to bring on labour. I ended up with very dry and yet also very spotty skin.

Completely disagree. Don’t use on eyebrows but use Vaseline on my face daily and have done for 2 years now (alongside tret). Cheapest regimen with best skin I’ve had in many many years. Also apply to dry skin anywhere else as I always have a tub on me and it’s just fantastic.

Ironically, it doesn’t work well enough on my lips, need Blistex for that!

Do you mind me asking whether you use Vaseline before or after Tret? Have heard really really good things about tret thanks x

Yes, I've read before that you can no more "train your hair" than you can train the weather.

I’ve got a babyliss big hair AND a fringe. Do I win the thread? Grin

Come to think of it I also have a bob and a pretty chubby face. I’ll get my coat now. Blush

What are your eyebrows like?

A friend told me to use deep heat spray and a hot water bottle to make my boobs grow as a 15 year old teenager... I did this religiously for months.

I'm still a size A 🤣

a celebrity once endorsed Babyliss Big Hair on her page and I went out and bought one. i've never bought something following a celeb endorsement. (I naively didn't realise this was what it was, a paid promotion)
It was impossible to use, absolute crap. Waste of money.

OMG, the Babyliss Big Hair was (is!) one of my best ever beauty products. I’ve got a lot of hair & it’s a PITA to dry and style, but that thing was a game changer for me - totally brilliant & really easy to get salon-looking results.

Admittedly took a bit of practice to get used to the back and forth rotation (a friend of mine returned hers immediately because it ended up tangled in a big ball on her head and she had to cut it free 😂) but it’s a great bit of kit, definitely not just a gimmick.

Remember that giddy anticipation of opening a brand new copy? It would get pored over all week and we'd read every page three times over, hanging onto every word. It was like a bible for teenaged girls on fashion, pop bands, make up and beauty, agony aunt advice.... And then when the photo-love mags came along with actual real people in the stories instead of hand drawn characters, Oh My Word it was like we'd died and gone to heaven. I remember seeing Leslie Ash appearing in those before anyone knew who she was.

The internet, the TikTok age and the instant gratification of a constant stream of information has killed all that. Quite sad really. Simple, innocent times.

I loved Jackie too, did it come out on a Wednesday or a Thursday? I can't remember the exact weekday but really recall the way I looked forward to it and the way it broke the week up. I would buy my copy and a chocolate bar on my way home from school and then enjoy undiluted happiness reading and scoffing.

I love my babyliss big hair ! I have a chin length Bob though … not sure how it could be used on long hair.

Same!!
I'm on my third one

Disagree. Vaseline on dry skin is good.

absolutely detest vasaline.
it's a jelly jelly doesn't soak into your skin it just sits there.
8 hour day cream is far better and a little goes the way

YourHappyJadeEagle · 08/03/2025 17:59

Advice friend read in a teen mag.
Late 1960s school friend insisted she wanted her beautiful long hair ironed to make it dead straight. She got home before her parents finished work and thought I was the ideal person to iron her hair. Cue strong smell of burnt hair and a friend who no longer had beautiful long hair.

😂so have I! I love my babyliss big hair and it really helps me blow dry my fringe. I have a bob but with high cheek bones which are about the only thing I like about my looks, somebody once asked if they were implants. I guess that is a compliment?

Lorrymum · 08/03/2025 18:08

When I was about 14 I read an article about nettle hair rinse. With great difficulty I picked nettles from a nearby allotment and boiled them in my Mum's biggest pot. The stench was dreadful but I was determined to have beautiful, shiny locks. It didn't work, I was just left with stinky, cabbage smelling hair.

Coconut oil as “suntan lotion”. Because you need to burn before you tan (1960s/70s). Children, do not do this.

I once saw a woman using Brylcreem on her skin at a beach in the 60s. She had a lovely tan!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 08/03/2025 18:10

The Babyliss Big Hair is not very hard wearing, they seem to conk out quickly. I had two before I gave up on them

Dissolve a paracetamol with a drop of water and apply to spots
Doesn't work

Lemon juice in hair and sit in the sun
All that happened is wasps loved me and my hair went orange before snapping (cheers mother-she insisted I do this as a teen)

Apply vaseline to eyelashes to help them grow
Ended up with an eye infection

Cube of jelly for stronger nails (my mother again)
Gross to eat and doesn't work

Jelly cubes, gross?? I’ve been known to scoff a whole block of blackcurrant jelly cubes! How anyone could restrict themselves to one a day I never did understand.

I love my Babyliss big hair. I've tried using my DD's Dyson Airwrap but have gone back to my Big Hair

I too love my Big Hair. I have the 32mm one which they don't make anymore. Mine gave up the ghost after 10 years and dh bought me a new one for my birthday 3 years ago. Really regret not buying the one I saw in Debenham's closing sale for 30 quid. The new one cost 50.

Wow, didn’t that prickle and itch like anything? You deserve to go up 2 cup sizes for your effort!

I just checked when I bought mine and it was 9 years ago. I love it and use it after drying my hair to smooth out the frizzy bits. I'd buy it again immediately if it broke.

MyrtleLion · 08/03/2025 18:31

Lip gloss is great, definitely wear it, no it's not sticky.

Rubbish advice and I couldn't stop licking my lips until they were dry.

FavouriteFilms · 08/03/2025 18:35

BrightYellowDaffodil · 08/03/2025 16:47

Yes, it stops a run long enough to get home/make it to the end of the day. Ditto hairspray!

Nail varnish works on ladders in tights, I’ve always done it.

Lip gloss should come with a warning for women with long hair.

When a boyfriend had told me about his new boss, who’d they’d tricked to repair her tights with sellotape ( she was in her 30’s at the time, so would never have fallen for this )

I knew it was the end…it was, he dumped me for her. I was 17.
