What’s the worst beauty tip you’ve ever received?

Inspired by the “what is the best beauty tip you’ve received” thread, I wonder about the opposite….

What is the most useless, unhelpful beauty tip you have ever received?

I’m torn between being advised to sit in the sun with tomato ketchup in my hair years ago to bring out the highlights (it didn’t and was v sticky), and the first time I fake tanned but didn’t know to wear mitts when applying and ended up with conker coloured palms for 2 weeks.

Do you mind me asking whether you use Vaseline before or after Tret? Have heard really really good things about tret thanks x

Vaseline keeps everything in so I've heard that you shouldn't put it over Tret.

I can definitely confirm that I have never been able to make my hair less greasy by washing it less often, including serious attempts in COVID.

managed to do it during covid. gone from washing every 2 or 3 days to once a week. dry shampoo was used a lot. but hardly used now. hardly ever gets greasy

NewMrsF · 09/03/2025 13:33

I get ‘salmon sperm’ (polynucleotide) injections so maybe there’s something to the jizz facial 😆

I have horrendously greasy hair, needs to ideally be daily washed 2 days is pushing it. By this logic my hair should be miraculously looking better by day 3 (instead of being ready to fry chips with)

You never do?!! 😮! Is it any good? Market research for my jizz farm…

How do they get the sperm out of the salmon? I'm imagining an underwater equivalent of the falcon wanking hat.

Squeezing an orange and using the juice as eye drops to make your eyes really sparkle with really white whites. It stings like Geronimo and your eyes don't stop watering. (1960s)

Hazey19 · 09/03/2025 18:57

Yep. I used to put Vaseline on my eyelashes and would get repeated styes. Caused by the greasy Vaseline. Only use for lips!

What!! Ouch!!

To think the white eyeliner to widened eyes, it's just looks weird.

Paniconthedancefloor · 09/03/2025 19:25

Uh oh, I thought the white eyeliner sounded like a good plan @Cotswoldmama and have just ordered one.

In other news, I have recently moved
to the Cotswolds so if you see someone with staring wide weird looking eyes bumbling around, that’ll be me!

Coconut oil which led to blisters after you fried in the sun for hours. Also Sunin for the orange highlights. We used to put drops in our eyes to make them glow. Eye Blue I think it was called.

But it’s good for a frost bitten penis I hear! 😉

Also lol at the semen is good for skin line @Darkclothes - I think they put that line in a manual of tips for adolescent boys in the 90s!

Funny how boys/men claim that of semen yet none of them are rubbing their own into their skin. 😂

Paniconthedancefloor · 09/03/2025 19:44

Did your eyes actually glow @David15? what colour? Was it the whites only? Sounds
v weird, although I’m a bit jealous - enquiring minds want to know!

On the subject of eyes, I recently learned there are such things as eye tattoos. You can have the whole of the whites of your eyes tattooed blue if you fancy. You’d have to be an absolute nutcase
of course who doesn’t mind being repeatedly stabbed in the eye, but if you are then
you can. Don’t all rush at once!

It would whiten and brighten tired eyes. They looked dewy. I'm sure it was called eye blue or something similar. I stopped using it in my late teens as I wore contact lenses and it would irritate them.

Sandinyourshoes · 09/03/2025 20:22

Actually still use Clearasil, not for acne but it does smooth out my forehead sebaceous hyperplasias without drying out the skin. I used to have acne and still get aftereffects such as stinging where I once had really painful spots, it keeps that at bay too. I still have weird skin in my late 60s. 😕

Re fringes - have to have a fringe now as my hair grew after chemo. I have no intention to have long hair ever again, but rather than kirbys or hairbands use a shower cap.

One of the worst ideas for me was shaving my legs then applying fake tan, causing a hideous rash on my legs.

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 09/03/2025 20:23

Sugaring for at home hair removal.

Messy and ineffective.

Paniconthedancefloor · 09/03/2025 20:24

Aaah, dewy sounds nice @David15, although I’m slightly disappointed as I was hoping for some freaky glow in the dark eyeballs! Although that wouldn’t be the most attractive I admit.

Paniconthedancefloor · 09/03/2025 20:27

Oooh yeah @Sandinyourshoes, fake tanning after shaving. I’ve been there and it wasn’t good.

Another top tip - I was lucky enough to float in the Dead Sea once. DO NOT SHAVE ANYTHING before doing that. Stings like a bastard!

Would someone be able to link to the BBH that they use and recommend, there's quite a few of them.

Yes I did the Dead Sea. Height of summer and stung like crazy.
