What’s the worst beauty tip you’ve ever received?

Inspired by the “what is the best beauty tip you’ve received” thread, I wonder about the opposite….

What is the most useless, unhelpful beauty tip you have ever received?

I’m torn between being advised to sit in the sun with tomato ketchup in my hair years ago to bring out the highlights (it didn’t and was v sticky), and the first time I fake tanned but didn’t know to wear mitts when applying and ended up with conker coloured palms for 2 weeks.

A friend told me to use deep heat spray and a hot water bottle to make my boobs grow as a 15 year old teenager... I did this religiously for months.

I'm still a size A 🤣

Maybe I can shrink my boobs with this method. I'm 36DD.

Do you mind me asking whether you use Vaseline before or after Tret? Have heard really really good things about tret thanks x

Tret is short for Tretinoin and is only available via prescription in the UK.

Coconut oil on everything. I just ended up greasy.

Coffee grinds (used) as conditioner. Nightmare clean up, gritty hair, shower and stank of coffee.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 08/03/2025 19:23

Lip gloss should come with a warning for women with long hair.

Hell yes. A light breeze and all your hair is glued to your lips.

Advice friend read in a teen mag.
Late 1960s school friend insisted she wanted her beautiful long hair ironed to make it dead straight. She got home before her parents finished work and thought I was the ideal person to iron her hair. Cue strong smell of burnt hair and a friend who no longer had beautiful long hair.

Edited

Ahhh, the trick was to cover hair with a thin tea towel for protection before you ironed it.
Obviously long hair was needed, even then it was a very perilous business.

I've got one sitting in my bottom drawer waiting until I can think of someone to palm it off onto. Its praises were sung on MN ...

I love the big hair!!! I'll take it off your hands!!

Beer shampoo

Do you remember Linco Beer shampoo as well? Beer shampoo was quite the thing at one point.

I'll take your shrinkage as a fair swap 🤣

"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" Kate Moss. I disagree. A huge slab of vanilla cheesecake is better than anything & who wants to be skinny anyway?

People who say that are clearly terrible at cooking 😁

Or to be serious for a moment are possibly either unwell and in need of medical treatment or are in a very unhealthy environment.

Bearing in mind Kate M started modelling at 14, I think it’s pretty clear it’s at least the latter in her case.

Hemorrhoid cream is good near the eyes as it shrinks skin and tightens . But not Anusol which is grey and putty like - ask me how I know . It is Preparation H the one for face as it is a clear gel . And yes it does actually work .

gladwhiskers · 08/03/2025 20:59

My mother used to tell us to put butter on sore chapped lips. Talk about rubbing salt in the wound!

Be careful this can thin the skin more leaving you with very wrinkly eyes over time.

On a handful of occasions I’ve used toothpaste to dry out a spot, and it worked.

Not advice given to me but « thinking » hair with those funny scissors doesn’t seem very wise in many cases.

In the 1990s beauty magazines would often advise wearing white eye-liner to disguise a hangover!

I tried toothpaste on a spot and it left me with a scar that took years to disappear

Paniconthedancefloor · 08/03/2025 21:57

Thank you @Soonenough for that important Preparation H clarification, saving me from
smearing Anusol under my eyes for no good reason!

The Babyliss Big Hair is not very hard wearing, they seem to conk out quickly. I had two before I gave up on them

I think my smaller barrel one may be on way out.

I've 2 or 3 since 2009 I think

Do like them

SoapCollector · 08/03/2025 22:19

Nail varnish to stop a pair of tights ladder from getting any bigger - it didn't and I just ended up with tights stuck to my leg with the nail varnish. Same with using hair spray for the same purpose!

Been mentioned a few times but I also tried the raw egg as hair conditioner - scrambled egg on my hair in the shower.

Was in a local pantomime production as a teenager, the make up ladies used thick orange panstick makeup which was difficult to remove - their advice was to use lard as a cleanser!

Using salt as a face scrub - think it took the top layer of skin off and I ended up with a hives type rash!

Burn once, it will toughen up your skin then you will tan all summer! And you have to burn to tan - very irresponsible, very bad advice.

SoapCollector · 08/03/2025 22:24

Just thought of another one - using cooled strong black coffee applied with cotton wool to add a sun kissed colour to your legs. Streaky coffee smelling, patchy legs, with colour that rubbed off on everything! Jackie magazine beauty tips had a lot to answer to!

theJackofHearts · 09/03/2025 00:36

I once tried the hydrogen peroxide on teeth thing. It gave me white gums. I panicked like hell and rang the dentist DEMANDING that Dr so and so come to the 'phone immediately. He didn't (was with a patient) but did ring me back within 5 minutes and told me it'd be fine but probably best not do that again!

I did the banana hair thing-was finding banana seeds in my hair for days. And the oatmeal facemask-not sure if that did anything other than make a mess.

theDudesmummy · 09/03/2025 10:02

I don't think we got Jackie in the country I lived in, but I lived for the Tammy and the Jinty which the local shop got in for me "from England" (the shopkeeper always emphasised) once a week. There were all kinds of mad tips. One which did seem to work was the egg white face mask. I did that for years.

Swap skinny for slim and it's a reasonable expression imo.

Use vinegar in your final rinse if you have dark hair.
No, I just smelt like a chip shop.

And clean your whole home with it so the whole place can smell like a chippy (I do use it for limescale)

I think it's an individual thing, though, and also your age is a factor. I remember being told that your hair adapts to the frequency of washing and that if you start to wash it every day, you'll end up HAVING to wash it every day because the sebacious glands will try to compensate by producing more oil.

Now, I don't know if there's any truth in this - perhaps any hairdressers on here could comment? But in my own experience I have found it to be true; the more frequently I wash my hair, the more quickly it becomes greasy.

Now I'm older, if I washed it every day, it'd very soon be as dry as straw though!

I can definitely confirm that I have never been able to make my hair less greasy by washing it less often, including serious attempts in COVID.
