Google pixel or something else?

Looking for a new phone, I've only ever had Motorola but was really disappointed with the last one I had as the camera was awful.

I don't play games but I need good battery power and a really good camera. I like android, definitely don't want an iPhone.

Anyone got a Google pixel 8,do you rate it?

I just switched to a pixel 8 from Samsung. I really like it and the camera is great. Both my kids used to be iPhone die hards, but they both got Pixel 7 a few yrs ago & have now got the 9. Both say they'd never go back to iPhone now.

I like mine. I'm not hugely fussed by phones but it works well. I use mine a lot and the battery seems good.

Triakne · 07/03/2025 00:29

I love my pixel, very happy with it

FoxtrotOrange · 07/03/2025 01:04

I don't like mine at all, sorry

TheLargestToblerone · 07/03/2025 07:14

The camera on the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is really good, so if you liked everything else about the phone then maybe that. Honor phones usually have good cameras.

I had this same discussion with a friend who is thinking of getting one, what is it that you don't like about it?

MrsJamin · 07/03/2025 07:31

All my family have pixels now, it's an excellent android phone, with none of rhe bloatware Samsung et al bung on.

AuntieBsBramble · 07/03/2025 07:38

I have a pixel 8. It's fine, I've always had Samsungs before but was attracted by the long update period.

I find it less intuitive than Samsung (I am probably just used to Samsungs) - and camera in particular is annoying to use - which seems ironic - palm setting for selfies is flaky and you have to go through 2 menus to turn flash on etc.

Pics themselves v. Good

Mind you the camera is so bad on the one I have a child's toy camera would be an improvement 🙄

Do you have gmail and use google apps like docs and shhets. Doyou use google photos and maps..

if so, its a no brainer, it meshes so easily with the whole google universe. The camera is excellent and there are wonderful retouching, editing etc tools.

we also have Fi and if you travel around a lot its excellent

I find it very unreliable. The charge doesn't hold well, it restarts itself periodically and just feels a bit slow and clunky at times. I'm also not crazy about the camera - it's not as good as I expected. Sorry to be so negative (and maybe I got the one bad apple) but I would NEVER have one of these again.

Dh had a Pixel as a cheaper alternative to a Galaxy last time. It lasted 15 months then the screen turned blue/black lines and refused to work at all. He didn't like using it at all either, said the camera was fine but not as good as the Galaxy phones he'd had before, and just generally less keen on the interface.

Couldn't get an early upgrade despite its young age (it wasn't dropped or mistreated, the screen thing happened overnight whilst charging - woke up to it one day and that was that). He's now managing with an ancient phone and counting the weeks till he can go back to Samsung.

Could just be an isolated incident, of course, but has put us off!

I like my pixel 8 pro. The camera takes quality photographs too.

Thank you, it does sound like you had a bit of a lemon, overall the reviews we looked at were very good. I'm not a heavy user of phone features, just the common things so I don't really know what is good or bad

unbalancedBella · 07/03/2025 08:43

I have a Pixel 8 Pro. The camera is probably the best I've ever had on a phone. Previously I've had Nokia Androids - now HMD. Live those, the Pixel have a clean, bloatware free operating system.

TeaRoseTallulah · 07/03/2025 08:53

Thanks everyone, I keep my phones for years as not on contract so it's a big thing swapping.

OP posts:
Almahart · 07/03/2025 08:55

I've got one and it's great. Still going strong after two years, easily does a whole day without needing charging (unlike my old iPhone) and meshes with google

Beamur · 07/03/2025 08:57

I've got one. Used to have a Motorola. Prefer the pixel although I do feel like a total sell out to Google now.
My DD (iPhone user) hates my phone and thinks it really horrible to use. I find it fairly intuitive but she doesn't.

That sounds good, the reason I stick with Motorola was the battery is amazing, lasts ages.

I think the youngsters are quite attached to their iPhones ,I know ds is.

I've got a Pixel 8A after finally upgrading my Pixel 4A when the battery stopped holding a decent charge.

I really like it - long battery life, and I'm a heavy phone user, and have had no issues since getting it in December. Camera is very good.

I got the battery on my Pixel 4A replaced for £30 and handed it down to ds2 and it's going strong - they're good phones imo.

I hated all the Samsung bloatware, although it would be less of an issue now that I always go for more storage.
