Could you pass a Life in the UK test

ItsChristmasEEEVEJeff · 03/03/2025 20:31

I have just wasted spent far too long doing life in the UK mock tests online for a bit of fun. However, I have failed every single one 😁

https://lifeintheuktestweb.co.uk/tests/

Can you pass any of the mock tests or am I just really stupid when it comes to the UK.

OP posts:
mdinbc · 03/03/2025 22:32

Passed the first one with 18/24, and I'm not from UK. Canadian, so we have similar government system.

LemonVerbeena · 03/03/2025 22:33

I got 88% and I'm NOT a UK citizen 😂...

Callipygion · 03/03/2025 22:34

follygirl · 03/03/2025 20:53

I had to do this test to get citizenship. I'm Dutch but have lived here since 1977, went to school and Uni so am fairly well educated and have lived here a long time.
Honestly it was quite a lot of work. I had to remember so many dates: Magna Carta, all the saints' days etc.

Some of the questions were also really patronising:

To be a good citizen should you:
A: sell drugs
B: kill people
C: be a good member of the community
D: blow up buildings

Not exactly that but you get the idea. Thankfully I did pass first time.

That ‘sample question’ and responses are very like those on our online training at work! 🤣
Eg. How should you greet customers?
a. Drop a basket on their foot
b. Say “fuck off you tosser”
c Say “good morning, how can I help?”
d. Stick your tongue out and poke them in the eye.

CrushingOnRubies · 03/03/2025 22:44

Just got 79% and passed the first one

TartanMammy · 03/03/2025 22:52

I failed. I'm Scottish, so that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it. It felt more like a history test than anything.

MaybeIamJealous · 03/03/2025 22:55

I just passed on the first go. I'm Irish so we have some, ahem, overlap!

TappyGilmore · 03/03/2025 23:03

Haha that was fun! Only did the first one but will come back and try the others later. I failed (63%), I misread one question, but the historical stuff is things that I genuinely don’t know.

But I do not live in the UK. I was born there but have lived in New Zealand for probably three quarters of my life.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 03/03/2025 23:11

I passed two easily and then failed the next two! It's quite addictive.

Cosyvibes · 03/03/2025 23:25

In test one, I got 14 correct out of 24 questions. I am a UK citizen by birth.... Will get my coat 🤣

Yousay55 · 03/03/2025 23:30

I finally passed test 5! I don’t know how people new to the country are supposed to know some of those questions.

SwordToFlamethrower · 03/03/2025 23:50

50% correct. I failed! Born and bred English.

Some of the correct answers were blind guesses too.

You don't need extensive historical knowledge at all!!
You just need a modicum of historical knowledge which should be straightforward general knowledge for the average person.

I had what year was the battle of roses, how long ago did the UK separate from the mainland geographically, who was king when Wales politically joined with the UK, which poet was famous during victorian times and a question about an Olympic gold medalist which I didn't recognise any of the names for (assumed the answer was one of the 2 knighted, which it was but I guessed the wrong one) all on the same one, along with a few other obscure facts. Some were common sense questions but the majority were random facts irrelevant to everyday life or modern day British culture.

ParrotParty · 04/03/2025 00:17

They could make this so much more educational. Just as an example - when were laws passed in Scotland to protect against forced marriage, with years close together. Instead why not ask "what do the laws protecting against forced marriage prohibit"
"What date did the uk leave the EU" with 30/31 jan 2019 or 2020 as the 4 options, why not ask "what changes did leaving the EU cause"
Specific dates don't give any useful knowledge

Yes I had those, they are pretty basic general knowledge about Britain and its history and culture to be honest, which presumably is why they ask them. There weren't any outlandish questions on there.

countingthedays945 · 04/03/2025 01:43

Failed both tests. 67% in both. I'm particularly poor on legal questions.

BeaAndBen · 04/03/2025 01:51

I passed first time, so I'm awarding myself an OBE and am putting myself 10th in line to the throne.

Meadowfinch · 04/03/2025 02:23

I got 17, 17, 21, 24

I'm rubbish at kings and queens of England. Don't know much about golf either

Mellap · 04/03/2025 02:47

I took two and passed both: 22 of 24 questions answered correctly (92%) Your time: 02:42

I am British so it doesn't seem like a big ask! It's questions like who is Robert Burns and where is Loch Lomond.

countrygirl99 · 04/03/2025 04:09

I'm not sure an English speaker wrote some of the questions "when did the UK government CALLED a referendum"!

MiddleAgedDread · 04/03/2025 06:27

Oganesson118 · 04/03/2025 06:38

Yes. I thought they were all pretty basic general knowledge to be honest but seems
I was wrong.

HairOfFineStraw · 04/03/2025 06:48

Yes I passed one for real in 2012, but caveat that the history section wasn't in it then (optional section in book but not tested as British people couldn't pass it either) but when the Tories came back to power they restored it.

DP (French) is studying for it now having had the current book passed to me by colleagues first a Romanian and then a Hungarian. When DP is done, an Indian couple are next.

ThisUsernameIsNowTaken · 04/03/2025 06:53

I could and I have. Had to study for it though. It made me even more resentful about Brexit because it was clear that many Brits wouldn't pass themselves (without preparation anyway).

But e.g. I know that Wales joined during the Tudor times, but not which king. I knew that the war of the roses happened in the 1400s but not which year.

So I guess I think you should be checking people know the gist. If the question had been, did the war of the roses happen in the 1100s, 1400s, 1700s or 1900s (as an example) then you could have used broad historical knowledge to eliminate the wrong answers. Whereas knowing whether it was 1455 or 1467 doesn't tell you about much except whether they know that specific fact.

This is so right. The test is essentially of your short term memory recall for dates/statistics and English comprehension.

There is no real benefit in knowing how many members there are in the Welsh Assembly but it’s worth knowing there is a Welsh Assembly, and why it exists. The test would rather you focus on whether it’s 60 or 65 members though!
