What's the oldest, low value thing you own?

I've finally managed to sort out a drawer that has been bothering me for ages and have decided to depart with the No 7 make up set I got when I was at university... at the turn of the century (I rarely wear make up, maybe once a year?).

What low value items are you holding onto out of laziness / stubbornness / a belief that it will be "useful" one day?

I’ve got an Ikea cheese grater that I bought when I moved into my first flat in 1999.

MindatWork · 03/03/2025 14:22

I also have an old No 7 make up compact my mum got me when i turned 21 - I am now 40 😄.

I also have an old Thelwell china piggy bank from when i was little which I was convinced would be an antique and worth some money when I was older (it blatantly isn't, it's all chipped but I don't have the heart to throw it away)

Some brass farm scales with big hooks on for weighing sacks, found in house and will never use.
also an ancient hand scythe - as above. Will never use but looks cool, and is hidden away in an outbuilding for no one to see

We’re still using some wedding presents every day , eg cutlery. We celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary later this year.

edit: if we’re using it every day I think it doesn’t fit in your category. In that case I’ll suggest the spare Robotchef I gave to my mother some time before she died in 1988. It’s complete and in the attic, even though the lid to the one I use is broken.

I bought a satin skirt in Dorothy Perkins in 1995 which I still occasionally wear.

oakleaffy · 03/03/2025 14:24

A 1795 Mail Coach halfpenny.

CherryRipe1 · 03/03/2025 14:28

An ammonite. Must be gazillions of years old. A piece of semi clear amber with some little fly thing encased in it. (Jurassic Park!). I was a nerdy kid.

Xiaoxiong · 03/03/2025 14:28

A t-shirt I was given as an exchange student in high school, must be nearly 30 years ago now. It's too small for me but I just can't part with it, there must not be many others like it (it was to a state middle school in Beijing in the mid-90s!)

IKEA cheese graters are the best to be fair.

This reminds me that I have a biscuit cutting set that my parents had when I was a child - so from the 80s - that lovely orange colour.

I wonder if it's the same set! Mine had blusher, eye shadow, lip stuff, and a mirror and brushes. It was handy for the once yearly make up application!

I have a breadknife I bought second hand as a student. It must be over 30 years old.

I have a rug I bought when I was 16 from Oxfam that I've just paid to be dry cleaned.

TickingAlongNicely · 03/03/2025 14:31

Two ornaments that belonged to my grandmother. She died before I was born, and were given to me after my grandfather died as the only female descendent. They ate probably mass produced and worthless, and very aesthetically pleasing but they feel so special.

wherearemypastnames · 03/03/2025 14:32

Books like a copy of kidnapped from around 1980
Springsteen T-shirt 1985?
CDs from the '90s
A towel from uni days ( late 80s)
Emergency plates from mams clear out - 1969:70 at a guess

Mingenious · 03/03/2025 14:32

I’ve got a house full of archeological artefacts so I’ve got loads of really cool shit that isn’t worth anything 🤣

If we’re talking about stuff I’ve bought I’ve got a fish slice I bought in Sainsbury’s Chelmsford in the year 2000 🤣 I’ve also got a nice royal dalton set from the 70’s that I get out at Christmas.

Monvelo · 03/03/2025 14:32

My Nana gave me my dressing gown when I was about 12. I'm now 42...

squashyhat · 03/03/2025 14:33

My Mum's sewing machine from the 70s. It still works fine.

theboffinsarecoming · 03/03/2025 14:35

A small piece of coprolite I found once on a walk. It is about 90 million years old.

Stai · 03/03/2025 14:37

My grandad’s fondue set.

paranoiaofpufflings · 03/03/2025 14:37

I have plenty of old stuff. Of my own: A jumper I got for my 18th birthday, was nothing fancy, but I'm still wearing it 30 years later. A desktop fan I got from Woolworths around 25 years ago, still in regular use in the summer. Loads of buttons, zips, etc, that I cut off clothes when worn out and I re-use.

Then I also have stuff from my parents and grandparents. Cutlery, crockery, books, etc.

I really dislike a short-use throwaway mentality.

Kittybelle123 · 03/03/2025 14:38

Pyjamas from Christmas when I was 11. I'm now 46 (they were massive on me to start with).

Some biscuit cutters that my grandmother had from the 1930s ❤️ still regularly in use.

I just don't throw anything away and my house has become a dumping ground as cannot say no to good working cast offs!

That's amazing, what a treasure!

KohlaParasaurus · 03/03/2025 14:38

A bone handled bread knife that belonged to my mother's maternal grandmother, who died in the 1950s. It isn't a pretty thing and it doesn't actually cut bread because the teeth are worn flat. It's of no sentimental value to me whatsoever, but my mother is of the view that it's a family treasure that she's passed on to me to hand down to one of my own children when the time comes, and I daren't dispose of it while she's still alive.

Bignanna · 03/03/2025 14:39

A 50 year old egg white separator

Horsedriver · 03/03/2025 14:40

A green leather pencil case my lovely grandma bought me to start junior school with 40 years ago.
The zip broke around 35 years ago and I’ve been meaning to get it mended ever since…

SonoPazziQuestiRomani · 03/03/2025 14:40

Some pyjama bottoms my mum bought for me from BHS in 1998. The elastic on the waist has seen better days but they're otherwise still going strong.

A baby towel my mum used when we were little and which I now use for my DC. It's more than 40 years old and the pattern has faded but it's sooo soft!

Although neither of those are kept out of stubbornness, they're just old but still in use!
