What's the oldest, low value thing you own?

I've finally managed to sort out a drawer that has been bothering me for ages and have decided to depart with the No 7 make up set I got when I was at university... at the turn of the century (I rarely wear make up, maybe once a year?).

What low value items are you holding onto out of laziness / stubbornness / a belief that it will be "useful" one day?

Oh! And a small Quality Street tin containing buttons. It was my grandma’s. Then my mum’s. Now mine.

Eyesopenwideawake · 13/07/2025 22:35

I have a Levi's sweatshirt I bought when I was 17. I'm 62 in a few weeks and I still wear it occasionally.

SpikyCelia · 13/07/2025 22:49

My green metal double paper punch. I used it during high school in the early 70's, then, college, then teaching, and now in retirement when creating collage pieces .

Cattenberg · 13/07/2025 22:53

A small Palestinian earthenware jug. Apparently, it dates from the 3rd or 4th century BC.

Dd has a couple of small fossils (an ammonite and a trilobite, I think), but I've no idea how old they are.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/07/2025 13:55

A make up brush DM bought me as a teen. I don't generally wear make up, but 40 years later i still have it for when i need it.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/07/2025 14:33

An ornament that belonged to my grandad , I rescued from my Mum as she had it in a cupboard . It sits on my kitchen windowsill
Over 120 years old , priceless for history , probably worthless monetary

imhavinghoops · 14/07/2025 14:38

Set of utensils I got from Woolworths in 2002 when I was heading off to university. Also a towel which I think is easily mid-80s may even be a wedding present of my parents (1983).

SausageRoll2020 · 14/07/2025 14:40

Probably a tub of vics vaporub, I swear those jars never empty and will probably outlive us all.

BrutalOutHere · 14/07/2025 14:43

Two surving cups and saucers from a cheap set that belonged to my Granddad and are about 60 years old (the rest broken over the years, sadly).

A kids enamel plate and bowl set from when my 20 yr old DS was weaning. No idea why we kept it but it’s become sentimental now.

Big bottle of Chloe Narcisse perfume that cost a tenner in a chemist about 20 years ago and I’m thinking of hawking on eBay now it’s discontinued 😆

Avantiagain · 14/07/2025 14:46

I have towels and kitchenware bits that I bought for going to University so 38 years old.
The oldest thing I have is a ww1 silver medal that was found at my fil house when he died. It was given to me because I am into family history and I discovered it belonged to dh's great grandfather's brother in law.

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/07/2025 14:46

An 1824 maundy coin. Its been drilled through to create a necklace otherwise its value would be higher.
I also have the bottle of rimmel nail varnish I wore on my wedding day. I've been married 30 years.

IanStirlingrocks · 14/07/2025 17:52

I have a 32 year old potato peeler, it works better than any other peeler that I’ve bought and I’ll be gutted when it finally breaks.

AffIt · 14/07/2025 17:56

I have a clothes horse that belonged to my grandparents which is older than I am and which I think might outlive me (I'm 46).

Still regularly used, works perfectly.

Its1971Again · 14/07/2025 18:04

I have a house full of junk and old tat! 😂
Some of it is stuff that I've bought. Some of it was rescued from my mother's house after she died, ditto some from my in-laws' house. God knows what I'm going to do with it all.

The oldest low value thing? Probably a Roman coin from my dad's coin collection that I inherited from him.

I bet that looks lovely. All soft and nicely worn. And coolly retro!

Actually pretty threadbare and cuffs are the worse for wear thanks to puppy attacks over the decades. But yeah, I still enjoy wearing it 😎

Gettingbysomehow · 14/07/2025 21:27

A headless antique Chinese wooden doll my grandmother gave me back in the 1960s. It might be worth something if it had a head but is worthless as is but I can't let go of it.

dontcomeatme · 14/07/2025 21:28

I have a clothes horse that has been handed down the generations, no joke, we call it Vera's clothes horse because she was the original owner, about 60/70 years ago. The thing is unbreakable. I've bought new and always held on to Vera's, becauae low and behold, the new one breaks and out comes the legend.

Denimrules · 14/07/2025 21:36

I have quite a few things. 2 mugs that were 18th birthday presents. A milk saucepan bought at QD when I had my first place. Lots of kitchenalia that belonged to my late parents - Pyrex serving dishes, potato masher etc.

A couple of childhood books that are falling apart.

AcquadiP · 14/07/2025 21:37

A threepenny bit - dated 1950s - given to me by my Granddad for luck 50 years ago. A bible belonging to my Nana, given to her at Sunday School when she was 12, with an inscription in it dated 1923. A blue and white patterned pottery serving dish, again belonging to my Nana, which I remember being used when I was a small child and I'm now in my 60s. It lives on a shelf in my kitchen but isn't used because I'm frightened I'll chip or break it!

beachygirl · 14/07/2025 21:50

The Russell Hobbs coffee percolator my grandad bought for my engagement in 1974. As well as the sentimental value, it makes better coffee than any machine I have bought since.

U53rn8m3ch8ng3 · 14/07/2025 21:53

About ten years ago, so when I was early 20s, my nana gave me a mixing bowl which was her mum's. My nana is mid 80s now.

An ammonite. Must be gazillions of years old. A piece of semi clear amber with some little fly thing encased in it. (Jurassic Park!). I was a nerdy kid.

So is my son, we have an ammonite, a t rex tooth and a stone with the imprint of a compsagnathus on it. They are his most favourite things still, many years after the peak of his Dino mad phase.

Velvian · 14/07/2025 22:06

My favourite bread knife was a wedding present of my parents in 1974. It has a slightly melted handle, but still the best at cutting without squashing the bread.

I have some tablespoons of my Nanny's, which I think were here mum's, if not her grandmother's.

Wow, a T-rex tooth. Amazing 🤩
