What's the oldest, low value thing you own?

I've finally managed to sort out a drawer that has been bothering me for ages and have decided to depart with the No 7 make up set I got when I was at university... at the turn of the century (I rarely wear make up, maybe once a year?).

What low value items are you holding onto out of laziness / stubbornness / a belief that it will be "useful" one day?

I have a very fine cheeseclothy sleeveless shirt that I was given, free, 30 years ago. It looks like sh*t. It's fake patchwork which originally had a shirred bodice. Needless to say, the elastic has long since given up the ghost.

BUT it's the coolest (temperature, it's absolutely NOT cool style wise) shirt that I wear when the temperature is really high. It's far too big now though so I guess I really ought to bin it.

A small wooden desk tidy thing made by my great grandfather.

Ahl134 · 03/03/2025 18:35

My gran's wooden rolling pin from the 1930s. Still used regularly.

CerealPosterHere · 03/03/2025 18:37

I have an old washing up bowl which is the “family heirloom sick bowl”. I remember it as a small child in the early 70s and it was old then.

RaininSummer · 03/03/2025 18:47

My rolling pin or garlic crusher which were purchased for me Christmas 1985 when I became a student (my Christmas list was all kitchen stuff). Their mate the cheese grater died earlier this year aged 40.

I've got a 64 year old Teddy bear. My grandparents bought it for my eldest brother when he was 6 months old and apparently it was the only one he smiled at. It has been passed down through all us kids and because I'm the youngest, I've still got it.

RedCatBlueCatYellowCat · 03/03/2025 19:32

Too many to know which is oldest or lowest value!

I have loads of my parents glasses and kitchen items from their wedding nearly 60 years ago. But they actually cost money at the time.

Maybe the bowls they got free with green shield stamps? They are ugly and cost nothing but are slightly newer.

Or the jumper my granny knitted for my mum in the 1950s using wool that she re-purposed from one of her own jumpers from the 1930s. Absolutely zero financial worth, but I will never get rid of it and have been wearing it on and off since I was about 15 (a long time ago!).

lazyarse123 · 03/03/2025 19:38

I have a white teddy bear my mum bought me in 1987 when woolworths closed it's biggest store in Leeds. I was 29. It was really cheap but means the world to me and still sits on my bed. Mum's been gone nearly 30 years but Teddy is still a comfort for me.

UnctuousUnicorns · 03/03/2025 19:42

Probably our red plastic colander that I bought in 1989 from Morgan's Famous 50 Pence Store in Liverpool for - 50p. 😁 We use it in our touring caravan now. It's still as good as new. 👍

plart · 03/03/2025 20:37

Pyjamas bought in 1989 for going away to university

sweetcapybara · 03/03/2025 20:37

My grandads butter knife.... worth nowt but one of my fave possessions

faffadoodledo · 03/03/2025 20:43

I have a set of Snoopy books from circa 1980. Bought when I was 14 and obsessed with all things American (how things have changed)

WillimNot · 03/03/2025 20:45

I have a mothercare bear that was given to me in 1982 when I was born. I also still have my Roland Rat soft toy.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 03/03/2025 20:46

For my 13th birthday back in 1987 I got a Boots gift voucher from my GD (grandad). I used it to buy a writing set which came in a pink pearlescent cardboard box with a hinged lid. 38 years later and I'm still using the box daily (it houses my medication).

I've still got the huge old pram that I was put in as a baby. I'm 63 now. I used it for all 3 of my babies. I rather hoped the DGC would use it but no DD wanted a modern stroller system. The pram wasn't even new for me because my older sister used it first. It's actually in a lock up now but I don't have the heart to throw it away. I know it's ridiculous and my DC don't even know I still have it.

I bought a Silver Cross coach built navy blue pram when my son was born in 1997 from a garage sale, it was £40. I loved it so much, I donated it to a local charity as I couldn't sell it or give it away. Little did I know that I'd become a young grandma ( older daughters) and now have 7 grandchildren. How I've pined for that pram.

This one I have is a Marmet coach built. It's actually still in good condition. I'd give it away if I thought a baby could make use of it. My DC slept in it stretched out properly on their back up to a year old.

A faded, cracked and worn out ball flinger. It's pale pink in colour but was originally a bright, vibrant red. It's 14 years old and cost £1 in a pound shop.

Been used several times a day since, handle cracked, but was repaired with a hot pin.

I’ve got an Ikea cheese grater that I bought when I moved into my first flat in 1999.

I have one of these as well.

Brilliant cheese grater.

I also have the veg peeler i bought at the same time.... it's the best peeler ever

nannyl · 03/03/2025 21:47

The hair dryer that I got for Christmas in 1994 is still going strong and used all the time now I have 2 teenagers of my own.

I got a white bath robe for the same Christmas which is still in use too

thetooththewholetooth · 03/03/2025 21:49

I've got a ceramic plaque thing which hung above my bed when I was a child. Brother and I were given matching ones when born. He still has his too. We're 50.

nannyl · 03/03/2025 21:51

I also have my Great Grandmothers extra large mixing bowl. She was born around 1890

She was a proffesional cook. It will be well over 100 years old now. I get it our every Christmas, and use it for Christmas pudding and mincemeat etc.

My actual house is pretty old... so old we dont actually know exactly when it was built, as there arnt any official records..... our best educated guess is around 1760 ish

specialsauce · 03/03/2025 21:52

A little plastic pot by harlequin full of matches with multi coloured heads.
It was my grandma's and I think it's from the 1950's.
I will never ever light one!

babiesinthesnowflakes · 03/03/2025 21:57

I have a laundry basket from 2006 which I use most days, it’s holding up well so I can’t see any reason why I wouldn’t use it for another twenty years!

Mintine · 13/07/2025 22:25

Ihavethebestdogs · 03/03/2025 16:23

A jelly baby my granddad gave me just before he died. It was a black one and has completely turned white. I've had it since 1993. I can't let it go. He lives in a little pot on a shelf.

This is so delightful and magical, it’s very valuable.

DryDay · 13/07/2025 22:31

I little pink plastic tail comb that my mum got free on a ‘My Weekly’.

She used to use the tail to section her hair when she was putting her rollers in (complete with Amani setting lotion).

She died in 1993.
