What's the oldest, low value thing you own?

I've finally managed to sort out a drawer that has been bothering me for ages and have decided to depart with the No 7 make up set I got when I was at university... at the turn of the century (I rarely wear make up, maybe once a year?).

What low value items are you holding onto out of laziness / stubbornness / a belief that it will be "useful" one day?

I have a vegetable peeler that came from my Great Aunt's house. If alive now she'd be 105 and I'm guessing she got it when she was in her 20s and moved into her own house. Making the peeler the ripe old age of around 80. It's a bloody good peeler.

Shopgirl1 · 03/03/2025 15:15

I have a pyjama top from M&S circa 1990…I was barely a teen, my mother always bought bigger than I needed, even today she buys me size 18, I’m a size 10…anyway it worked well with those pjs, still wear the top regularly as it’s warm and it’s washes well. I tore the bottoms in about 1992 unfortunately.

GarlicStyle · 03/03/2025 15:22

Old-old: a handful of family books that are over 100 years old. They'd be worth something if they weren't dogeared and covered in children's drawings (mostly by me).

Why the fuck have I still got that old: too much to mention, I'm ashamed to say! I still use some makeup I bought in the 80s, ditto some bits of worthless jewellery and probably some clothes.

I know about old makeup 😄 I very rarely give the products a bit of a wipe with disinfectant but, if they haven't dried up and don't give me a rash, I reckon they're good enough.

I have a red plastic serving spoon. Bought at 18 when I moved into my first flatshare. Still use it daily and I'm 69 this month

I have a pair of kitchen tongs that belonged to my mother.

They will have been bought in the late 1950s or early 1960s. So Over 60 years old. I am now 70.
They are a bit tarnished, so I don't use them for food but they are handy for getting the basket out of my InstantPot

The sheet music for an easy piano arrangement of Peter and the Wolf, which must have been a tie-in with the Disney animation of it, as it was published in 1948.

I see that there is a copy on sale on eBay for £3.00

TheBewleySisters · 03/03/2025 15:52

A hand-painted dish that my best friend bought for 50p at a flea market in 1974.

Iwillquit · 03/03/2025 15:55

A purple hair comb when I first got my hair permed in 1986. Use it still everyday.

elp30 · 03/03/2025 15:56

A turquoise stone given to me by my uncle in 1977.

caringcarer · 03/03/2025 16:00

I've still got the huge old pram that I was put in as a baby. I'm 63 now. I used it for all 3 of my babies. I rather hoped the DGC would use it but no DD wanted a modern stroller system. The pram wasn't even new for me because my older sister used it first. It's actually in a lock up now but I don't have the heart to throw it away. I know it's ridiculous and my DC don't even know I still have it.

polinkhausive · 03/03/2025 16:02

A pack of cards that my grandmother gave me in 1986 - she had bought them in around 1955, she taught me some card games and said I could keep them. I think of her when I play cards with my children

I still have my very first eyeliner sharpener from Boots circa 1986

VastOtter · 03/03/2025 16:04

I’ve got some pepper in my cupboard that expired in 1991. It belonged to my uncle, and I like having a little something of his just hanging out in my kitchen, reminding me of him.

thiswaypleasethankyou · 03/03/2025 16:05

oh and a plain black vest from M&S that I must have bought in about 1998. It's outlived all my others and still worn weekly even though it's a size 8-10 and I am now a 14!

Time40 · 03/03/2025 16:08

So, so much. I'm obsessed with all things antique and vintage. If it's old, I'll probably like it more than something modern. Even my car is ancient.

TomatoSandwiches · 03/03/2025 16:09

An 1850s mustard/salt spoon, I used to use it to make "perfumes" when I stayed at my nans house and she gave it too me when she downsized.
I treasure it and only I'm allowed to use it 😂

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 03/03/2025 16:18

My mum's holding onto a green Toby jug that belonged to my Great Grandmother for me. It's worth about £10, is around 100 years old and very ugly, but for some reason I don't, nor my mum wants, to part with it. I also have my Dad's tatty old bear from the 1940s.

BeaAndBen · 03/03/2025 16:18

Some of these aren’t worthless or valueless, they are great - like the fossils. I think my (few) fossils are brilliant and wouldn’t include them in a list of cheap old stuff.

I do have a nightie I bought in 1994 that I’ve repaired three times. It is a very comfortable fabric, so I keep using it despite the state it’s in. Also a crappy old acrylic jumper from 1990 that has a big hole in the back. It’s awful and I should throw it out, but if I’m feeling really really unwell I wear it as it comforts me.

My own version of the Dressing-gown Of Doom 😉

I’ve got an Ikea cheese grater that I bought when I moved into my first flat in 1999.

Is the one with the plastic oval collection bit? I love mine, bought in 1999

Ihavethebestdogs · 03/03/2025 16:23

A jelly baby my granddad gave me just before he died. It was a black one and has completely turned white. I've had it since 1993. I can't let it go. He lives in a little pot on a shelf.

This is high value and the nicest thing I've read in ages.

CMOTDibbler · 03/03/2025 16:26

My childhood swimming towel with my name tape lovingly sewn onto it by my mum. Must be 45 years old.
An M&S microfibre slip I bought in 1990. Originally I wore it as a dress to go out in, but still wear it as a slip if I need a short one

mbosnz · 03/03/2025 16:28

I've got a fantastic ladle that Mum gave me when I was home. She got it as part of a set for a wedding gift, that would have been around 1956, I think. So approximately 69 years old.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/03/2025 16:29

A tin and a pencil pot I got for my 7th birthday. A stapler I bought when I was 13.
