I agree @pointythings . The language in that article is unnecessarily sneery.
“Humiliating U Turn” = “ability to reflect and react”.
The paragraph about workers put on Light Duties in the 1970s is laughable. As if everyone in the 70s worked down the mines and the welfare bill wasn’t as large because kindly mine owners would let you file invoices in the office instead Hmm

That wouldn't be humiliating though. That would be the sensible thing. Go back to the drawing board, work out the best strategy for getting the benefit bill down (hint: cuts ain't it!) and then try again.

Compare and contrast with LIz Truss ramming her budget through against all advice, or the peculiar obssession Sunak had with small boats.

Regulars to the this thread will all have expressed a preference for a pragmatic government of any stripe over pure ideology.

It's with that in mind that I really can't see why there isn't a grown up debate over some sort of tax increase for defence, since it wasn't in the future in 2024. And also a clear decision to revisit the UKs potential membership of all and any European organisations that would make a US-less trade and defence future more possible.

Once you accept - as I do - that the US has chosen to bust it's flush, then why in the name of holy fuck would you dither around for years to experience the effects of that before you decided to act ?

This is a grasp the nettle, eat the frog moment. There is no going back to 2024. Same as in 1939 there was no going back to 1938.

The better comparison with Truss would be Starmer-Reeves and the enormous tax rises. They aren’t unwinding the mistake. They’re forging on. Theirs is a slower burner of an economic disaster. But a worse one for that.

I strongly suspect that the more eyebrow-raising of the floated cuts were never going to happen. But the media strategy has backfired: enough people believed it all to damage Labour’s reputation.

There’s a theme developing with this government that it believes it can do no wrong, personally, economically, socially, and with communication of policy. And then things go wrong. There’s surprise and panic in government. I put it down to the easy ride they had in the face of a disintegrating Tory government.

I am fed up of Starmer and Reeves now. They have a massive majority. It is unlikely they will lose on 2029 given the state of the Tories and The Farage Party.

Do something radical. Put up income tax by 1p for basic rate and higher rate. By 2p for anything over £125 or something like that. Put up VAT on higher end goods. It can be argued that the world has completely changed since July 2024 and unexpected measures are needed. Then just before the next election they could possibly cut it all again if times are better.

But no, they decide to out Tory the Tories to the extent they piss off their own backbenchers and even some of the front bench.

I didn't vote Labour to get Tory Austerity 2.0

Meanwhile disabled people, their families and carers are being left anxious and scared not knowing what exactly is going to happen. Meanwhile, all the cunty benefit bashers have been having orgasms all over MN and X and god knows where else (often expressing faux concern).

Anyway, fuck 'em all. Me and DH have just had a lovely little weekend away in our "free" car and I spent this week's Carer's Allowance on some nice food and wine. Might as well have fun with the state's money before we lose it!

Eta: @rummly I think you are wrong. I think Reeves genuinely wanted the cuts. Plus there will still be cuts, it is only the freezing of PIP that they are definitely u-turning on I reckon. But let's see what the green paper says. I have an inkling it may be disabled people on UC they will go for. Because that is more palatable to the public. Deserving disabled vs. undeserving disabled.

Yeah. But it is so big we couldn't fit it into the back of our free car, so it is being delivered by the government along with our free goat.

Llttledrummergirl · 16/03/2025 14:51

I'm a tad confused by the u- turn thing up thread.
I thought plans are being announced on Tuesday, so before then everything is speculation. Have they announced early? I try to void speculation as most of it is bollocks to muddy the waters.

I thi they are expected to u-turn on freezing PIP. As to the rest of it who knows. Like you say, best to wait for the green paper.

Same.

Except that I voted with huge reservations because I feared this was what we were getting. I was hoping they were making the noises they needed to make to get elected.

In some areas they were. I don’t understand why they are picking this particular battle.

Thank god you got the goat. I suspect from some threads recently people are not getting their free goats. They are rarely mentioned.

It’s all speculative.

Fairly sure The Guardian once did an infographic on tax evasion versus unclaimed goats to reveal the scale of the problem.

PandoraSox · 16/03/2025 15:21

The PIP bashing threads have started up again. If I disappear it's because I have been too rude to the benefit bashers. I am going to try to ignore them though.

I think I should be given my free goat.

Because on Friday after ds drove his free car home using only his hands on account of not being able to walk and I had to carry his home wheelchair downstairs for him to get to the bottom of the stairs - bum shuffle up the first floor to where our (cheap as HA) flat is - while I carried his wheelchair up - I’m absolutely gutted that we don’t have a goat to greet us.

I mean - life’s so easy surely the goat won’t create any extra hard work Wink

.

Gloriously misleading infographic.
The circles seem to be calculated by width rather than by surface area, making the differences appear about 10x bigger than than the numbers suggest.
I commend 'How to Lie with Statistics' by Darrell Huff.
