@Well said @Alexandra2001 and @dontcallmelen .
See also PPE contracts re the Tories,
I am also not shocked but annoyed that the Tories have never accepted their culpability for all of the things mentioned above.
There is absolutely nothing stopping high wealth individuals or companies paying extra voluntary income tax, according to something I researched earlier.
If you love you country and are not struggling with CoL you could do this
Come on Patriotic Millionaires , start the ball rolling!

In 2 centuries time, Boris will probably be remembered as the PM who got rid of the Fixed Term Parliament Act. (Which for the record I was a massive supporter of when introduced, but now admit the critics at the time were 100% right about).

So praise for our second worst prime minister ever there, where it's due.

The fixed term parliament act removal was a manifesto commitment, about the only one Mr Johnson kept.

So if he is the second worst PM, who is the worst? You could argue someone else if measured on a per day basis, but not otherwise, surely?

Notonthestairs · 12/03/2025 17:54

Johnson also stuck to his manifesto pledge of increasing the number of international students to 600,000.
Shame then that successive governments have treated those students as pariahs rather than as contributors (which they are).

You need a metric that can normalise for shitness over time.

However i wouldn't really refine it too much, as Liz Truss comes out as worst of all time no matter how you rearrange the parameters.

That would be tanker of the economy, drum roll and no surprise, Liz Truss.

PickAChew · 12/03/2025 18:16

Mad Lizzie set the bar astonishingly low. I can see plenty of current candidates to usurp her position as worst ever PM but, thankfully, they're not likely to have a shot at it, at least for the next few years.

Damage done divided by time taken ?

It would have to be a one in 300 year event. We have more frequent earthquakes.

For me Cameron was the worst, he was responsible for Brexit, thats caused havoc with our economy, emboldened Russia and our standing in the world, he also gave us Austerity, something from which we may never recover from.

Truss was clearly a bit crazy but she was hardly in long enough to cause a great deal of long term damage, we can and should recover from her budget.

Well said Richard Burgon for that question and I'm sure he's not the only Labour backbencher MP who has the same thoughts.

I'm surprised he had the Whip restored in the first place. I imagine he's well on the way to losing it again. I'm afraid I really don't have a lot of time for him.

DuncinToffee · 12/03/2025 20:41

The House of Commons has just passed Labour’s Employment Rights Bill.

That's great news! It's going to be transformative regarding people's lives.

BIossomtoes · 12/03/2025 21:00

Excellent. And not before time.

The Labour Party has always been a party that can tolerate lively debate and criticism. Not so much now, but there's work to be done. Going for those on a benefit that doesn't preclude from working is disgraceful and shouldn't happen.

Which is why Burgon is right to speak up in Parliament. Glad he asked that question.

I'm not saying he was wrong in principle to ask the question. I appreciate my opinion might be skewed by my personal view on him.

I'm a bit of a Burgon fangirl.

I have personal reasons for not being keen, I'm afraid.

The beauty of these threads is that we can disagree respectfully. 😉

Tis true.

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2025 06:47

What on earth have MN done with the new app?? It's horrible to look at and I can't flip the threads! It promotes loads of crap I don't want to look at instead of having the threads I'm on as a main page. Honestly, who do they consult?

itsgettingweird · 13/03/2025 06:58

Mines just made me sign in again on iPad. Phone still using old version.

I agree it's really hard to navigate - the old way was fine!!!!

Saucery · 13/03/2025 07:02

Honestly, who do they consult?
Just their advertisers.
The Flip thing isn’t just because the OP is stickied to the top whichever way you’re looking at it, is it?

Piggywaspushed · 13/03/2025 07:25

Just figured out how to flip. It's also sending all new posts as notifications to my phone and I do not want that. Grr.

PandoraSox · 13/03/2025 08:34

I never got on with the app so just use the mobile version of the site.

Don't tell MNHQ, but since they brought in the ad-blocker blocker I see no ads. I don't have an ad blocker 🤷‍♀️ (and I see ads on other sites).
