Why would you do click and collect?

I did during covid
I used to do online delivery but you dont always get what you want, you have a minimum spend,
I like to vary between shops.
so rarely do online shopping.
the negative of click and collect is surely the same, you dont get what you want?
I guess there is less temptation?

I can't see the advantage of C&C over delivery! We have a delivery every week, so we have a delivery pass which is £40 a year so less than £1 per week which in my view is well worth the saved hour it would take me to go in person! And I always book the next week's slot as I'm finalising this week's order, I've never not got our usual slot.

8889MockTurtle · 01/03/2025 17:46

well £25 minimum spend seems compelling.

I was thinking click and collect on bigger one off items, like collecting a the fridge you want from the nearest branch of Currys, or having the mattress delivered to your local Dunelm. I guess you could have substitutions in a full supermarket shop

Squeakpopcorn · 01/03/2025 17:50

I used to do c & c when I used to drive past the supermarket on the way home. It meant I didn’t have to go home to wait for the delivery, just get into something and then have to stop and sort my shopping out.

dottiehens · 01/03/2025 17:51

These days the shops do not have much in stock. More available online for delivery and click and collect. Click and collect is sometimes quicker than delivery so that is the only two reasons.

I use it if I can't get the home delivery time slot that I want. Or if I'm too late to change it/want to book it for the next day, I can get a click and collect instead as usually the next day delivery slots are all gone but click and collect is always available

Yep same here. Miles quicker than going in and doing the shop yourself.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 01/03/2025 17:52

Like PP, I can only do the big shop at the weekend, but if I go in, I like to look at every shelf in each Isle.
I also then spend way more than intended.

C+C takes minutes whereas going in would take an age.

turnyouralarmoff · 01/03/2025 18:18

I do it because no-one has to wait in for the delivery, there are more slots available, and you can drive by to collect a week's groceries on the way home from football/hockey/dance. Very efficient and you have captive helpers to put everything away when you get home.

Rivari · 01/03/2025 18:21

I like it because we can pick it up when it's convenient, and then pop into the shop for any bits they said were out of stock but which aren't (which happens every week). It's also less stressful unpacking the boxes into bags in the car park because they don't stand watching you like the delivery guy does. But it's mainly because we can get the missing bits there and then, drop off the plastic recycling (which the driver guy can't take) and it's convenient.

HollyBerryz · 01/03/2025 18:21

If you have a good supermarket it's fine, if not it's a pita looking at you asda

RickiRaccoon · 01/03/2025 18:22

My DH did it after work to save time recently. The quality of some of the produce wasn't great and we realised about a week later a few things were missing. We probably wouldn't do it again unless in a real pinch timewise.

kaos2 · 01/03/2025 18:24

I do it all the time because I see no my in dragging a trolley round a supermarket . I literally don't understand why people do it !

GrainneIsAinmDom · 01/03/2025 18:27

I prefer doing it online as I can see all the offers and then meal plan accordingly. In the shop I can't think quickly enough and I end up coming home without enough meals for the week. Click and collect is cheaper than delivery and usually more availability. I can bring the kids and they don't even need to get out of the car which is way more convenient. I also don't need to worry about getting parked at busy periods

Onlyforaweek · 01/03/2025 17:19

I do it when I’m pretending to do the weekly shop, but instead click and collect, then sit in the supermarket carpark with a coffee and a book.

You win!

taxguru · 01/03/2025 18:30

Click and collect is more convenient than going into the shop. You can reject anything you don't want, i.e. short dated items, and can go into the shop itself to buy replacements. So you can be in and out in 5 minutes just buying a few odd things, rather than half an hour doing your full shop.

I far prefer it to home deliveries where it's harder to reject stuff as you then have to go somewhere to buy replacements. And I'd rather not spend 30 minutes traipsing around a supermarket buying stuff that someone else could pick for me. I'd rather go in for just a handful of items I'd prefer to choose myself such as fresh fruit, veg and fresh meat.

Ordering click and collect online means I can take my time, look for offers, etc., whereas that's harder in the hustle and bustle of a busy supermarket.

SparkyBlue · 01/03/2025 18:30

I hate supermarket shopping and I find click and collect very handy as I'm
Usually out and about doing things anyway

I’ve done it when I want food asap, and delivery is 4 days plus, it’s quicker for me to add it all at home using existing online shopping lists and send my son down to collect!

What shop is 4 days for delivery? Sainsbury's and Ocado are both next day for me (or same day). Sainsbury's also offer a "chop chop" delivery (i.e. straight away, within 30 mins) for 25 items or fewer.

PicturePlace · 01/03/2025 18:43

HotelCustody · 01/03/2025 17:07

Because I can’t be arsed be to go food shopping after a set of 12+ hours nigh shift.

Edited

But why not do delivery, which is even easier?

Yeah I'm with you on this 😀I have absolutely no idea why people don't like delivery or c&c!

The supermarket will pick my entire order for me and bring it right to my door. I don't have to go round the shop, find all my groceries,, load them in the trolley, take them out of the trolley and load them onto a conveyor, load them into the trolley again, back out of the trolley and into the car, then all out of the car and into my house.

Yes I get occasional subs, but it's rare and they're always sensible, I simply don't get the issues that people seem to encounter on here!

It's a complete no brainer, it saves me considerable time every week.

kaos2 · 01/03/2025 18:50

@Steeryourselfanywaythatyouchoose agree 100%

Whose delivery pass is only £40 per year??

my Tesco pass is £7.99 (I think) a month and I still think it's more than worth it!!

i have mine set on no substitutes, and it's rare that what I've ordered isn't available.

i love tesco delivery.💕

PicturePlace · 01/03/2025 18:52

@SnoopySantaPaws Sainsbury's annual pass is £40.

Dueanamechange2025 · 01/03/2025 18:53

8889MockTurtle · 01/03/2025 17:08

is there no minimum spend on click and collect?

Yes but it’s less then home delivery.

For me it’s usually when I’ve left it too late to get a home delivery slot or I can’t wait in for the full hour (or spare the hour in the supermarket) but know I’ll be passing the supermarket whilst taking one of the kids to school / sports / friends etc.

TBH I’ve found the subs / missing items a lot better than a few years ago. One or two subs is worth the sacrifice of not going to the supermarket and we save money as only buy what we actually need.

Yes, I can see the appeal of C&C for busy working parents instead of dragging tired and hungry kids around the supermarket after work.

I was lucky and didn't have to work FT when my kids were little and I quite enjoyed going to the supermarket with them during the day when it was quieter. I actually do think they learn a lot through doing basic activities like that, counting and learning new vocabulary etc so click and collect prevents that learning from happening. But it's definitely better to do that than drag a fractious baby or toddler around at 6 or 6.30pm.

Takes me ten minutes to drive up nip home and fridge it on my lunch time I couldn't do it if I went round the shop.
