Can AI just fuck off please?

I've not been impressed with AI since I asked ChatGPT about noblegiraffe on MN and it told me that I'd voted for Nigel Farage and had right wing views.

But recently, it seems like every bloody thing has got AI sat on it. I just looked at my emails and the preview pane instead of showing the first line of the email now has a little précis of the email. I went to twitter to see what is being said about the Trump fiasco and every other tweet now has AI asking questions about the tweet at the bottom of it like a surprise English comprehension test (see below). I open a PDF and it asks me if I want a summary of the document. I went to send a text and it suggested I reply 'Sound's great!'.

NO. You are the modern equivalent of Clippy and no one liked Clippy either. Just Fuck Off.

Can AI just fuck off please?

What I hate is that it’s taking everyone else’s work.

If we google something we get the answer from AI at the top, which they’ve extracted from websites. People have put so much effort into those websites but they’re no longer getting our page views, so they’re losing out on advertising which pays for all the hours they out in.

noblegiraffe · 01/03/2025 16:52

That's a good point.

Obviously all the artists are losing out because AI is being used to generate artwork for posters etc that was trained on their art.

I fucking hate it. It makes me want to go back in time and put the genie back in the bottle.

noblegiraffe · 01/03/2025 17:00

And SO many pictures on social media are AI generated now. My Facebook seems to think I want to see pictures of 'book nooks' and 'tiny houses' that are just obviously fake.

Comments are fake too. Go on twitter and read a tweet and then the responses are anodyne AI generated comments posted by bots, sometimes the same comment multiple times.

I dunno i did see an AI video of zelenskyy punching trump which was worth seeing.

Babsgranddaughter · 01/03/2025 17:03

I saw on social media that if you swear on Google, you don't get the AI panel at the top - it works! And it's hilarious to Google say, "what time is it in fucking Washington?"

noblegiraffe · 01/03/2025 17:06

Partybaggage · 01/03/2025 17:02

That is very true.

However, I don't trust the general public to not now remember 'that time Zelensky decked Trump in the Oval Office'.

I work for a large rich company and they are hammering into us to use AI as much as possible. I think it’s only a matter of time u til I no longer have a job

JohnTheRevelator · 01/03/2025 17:17

The thing that pisses me off about it is that it is gradually taking over people's jobs, but this government keeps banging on about 'getting more people into work' (i.e. namely disability benefit 'scroungers') as if there are going to be thousands of jobs going begging.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 01/03/2025 17:23

I fucking loathe it.
It steals IP and is putting people out of work.

It relies on third-world "ghost" workers paid pennies to tag data all day, including all the worst stuff online like Al Qaeda videos, with no labour rights or protection.

It uses precious metals that fuel a war in the DRC that has killed 6 million people to date.

It uses insane amounts of water to cool the data centres, disrupting the water supply for local people and wildlife.

Its pollution causes big local spikes in respiratory diseases, with asthma deaths up by 1/3 in local areas.

It uses freaking insane amounts of energy, when we should be aiming for net zero. Training one hour of CHatGPT data uses as much energy as 80,000 households in a year. The International Energy Agency predicts that next year it will use as much energy as Japan.

It dumbs people down, eroding their cognitive skills. There have been studies showing that this applies to e.g. senior radiographers.

It comes up with complete bullshit a non-negligeable % of the time. Like pure bullshit invents stuff.

It generates vast quantities of misinformation that people cannot detect.

All so people can produce pictures of mutant five-legged kittens for a laugh.

Do they have a CSR policy / statement on environmental responsibility? Ask them how they square that with pushing AI.

Sinkintotheswamp · 01/03/2025 17:31

"Modern equivalent of clippy". Ouch.

The bbc tweets get masses of bot replies. I try and report them every so often. Musk has totally buggered up twitter.

Frequency · 01/03/2025 17:32

ChatGPT has just been blocked in the NHS Trust I work in because of security concerns and also issues with it giving incorrect information.

I do think there is an issue with it stealing IP and low-skilled jobs, especially call center work but there is a long way to go before it starts taking jobs from skilled workers. It will happen though, and probably within our kid's lifetime, unless someone steps in to put the brakes on.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 01/03/2025 17:34

It has already taken loads of jobs from skilled workers in areas like art, graphic design, and translation.

Sinkintotheswamp · 01/03/2025 17:36

I've just remembered a friend used ChatGPT to send a formal email. She showed me after she sent it thinking it was dead good, and it was shit and obvious chatGPT.

RaininSummer · 01/03/2025 17:39

I want to just be a Luddite and not use AI as it's not a good thing in the long time for humans as far as I can see. However it won't make any difference if a few of us don't use it as no doubt young people will be all over it.

GreyAreas · 01/03/2025 17:42

I heard a respected business person talking about its uses, like a clothes website that you can use it on, to narrow down your style and preferences. I put in a detailed sentence about what I was looking for and it said 'I'm having a problem with that, please come back later.' On a fucking clothes website that wants to sell me clothes and could have shown me literally anything from their collection. Sale lost immediately.

Timefordrama · 01/03/2025 17:49

I looked up a person whose history I need to know about for my company. AI presented me with ' facts' which were a mix of his actual history with that of a TV personality with the same name. Good job I continued digging a bit further or I could have got the company into some very deep water.

Overhaul54 · 01/03/2025 17:51

Absolutely Op. Its turned using a search engine into mission impossible. As you say, just comes up with some irrelevant comment rather than the list of websites I actually asked for. So frustrating.
Even writing this now, and what was once spell check has turned into some sort of interminable English lesson.
Fuck off. Also stop being so American. I am in the UK.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 01/03/2025 17:51

We inadvertently fuel its brain with every new thing we say or create.

I like the Clippy reference OP. He was a total cockwomble.

I saw a video suggested to me by Google of a "new Titanic film" starring Tom Holland and Anya Taylor Joy. I clicked on it, and though it was blatantly AI to me, some poor souls thought it was real. It had gone viral on YT. Total bollocks.

AI is already in the wrong hands. It manipulates everything we see now.

I hate that Google put the AI results at the top of a search . Pisses me right off. I might curse at it now, see if it works. Google keeps emailing me to install Gemini. Get in the bin, Google. You are ruining what is true and beautiful.

CactusForever · 01/03/2025 17:53

Amen @AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize x10000

ssd · 01/03/2025 17:57

I agree with you @noblegiraffe

Fortunately I'm old and thick when it comes to IT and i have no scooby how AI works so i dont recognise it and i dont use it.

Ive felt so long theres threads started here and you think "OH COME ON", They might be AI i just dont know.

nocoolnamesleft · 01/03/2025 18:06

In general, I agree with you. But the AI video of Zelenskyy punching Trump is a thing of wish fulfilment beauty.

MMAMPWGHAP · 01/03/2025 18:08

I tried out ChatGPT the other week on two different subject areas. It told me outright lies about both.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/03/2025 18:11

It's useful, but also problematic. Its made me v hesitant about liking anything on sm. However it's also great for writing Facebook posts for Guides (in my second language!).
