Can AI just fuck off please?

I've not been impressed with AI since I asked ChatGPT about noblegiraffe on MN and it told me that I'd voted for Nigel Farage and had right wing views.

But recently, it seems like every bloody thing has got AI sat on it. I just looked at my emails and the preview pane instead of showing the first line of the email now has a little précis of the email. I went to twitter to see what is being said about the Trump fiasco and every other tweet now has AI asking questions about the tweet at the bottom of it like a surprise English comprehension test (see below). I open a PDF and it asks me if I want a summary of the document. I went to send a text and it suggested I reply 'Sound's great!'.

NO. You are the modern equivalent of Clippy and no one liked Clippy either. Just Fuck Off.

It already is buggering up jobs because recruiters now have to use it to filter out applicants who can apply to 100's of jobs at the click of a button. This means anyone without a degree is often filtered out of basic admin jobs and youngsters can't get their first job because they all look for experience. As someone looking to get back into work post children, it also seems to be filtering me out because I haven't worked for years. Yet no one seems to be able to spell check emails, reply to emails, leave a message on calls or post the correct letters out any more; everything is auto generated and nothing personalised. If a company I don't know tries to call me 2 times a day I will not answer - that is what my answerphone is for, to screen spam.

I would not have been as brave as you in how you say it but I totally agree with what you are saying.

I saw on social media that if you swear on Google, you don't get the AI panel at the top - it works! And it's hilarious to Google say, "what time is it in fucking Washington?"

Nice! Unusual tip but I’ll enjoy that.

CheekyLemonHiker · 01/03/2025 18:57

Clippy was an absolute twat.

I tried out ChatGPT the other week on two different subject areas. It told me outright lies about both.

We've been told as teachers that AI will reduce our workload.

I've tried it a few times and it has produced boring lessons that I can do better, and got some maths questions wrong. I gave up.

I know that using ChatGPT is horrendous for the environment. Is this shit AI that's reading my emails and trying to answer my texts for me also using tonnes of water? I don't want it.

I'd not had much to do with AI until Microsoft added it to Microsoft 365 when it changed to M365 Copilot. I'm writing a book & asked it to write a synopsis & book review, they were both really good & told the story exactly as I intended it. There will always be arguments for & against AI, the advances for using it to review scans, Xrays & test results could be game changing & if it is used properly can only be good.

I hate the fucking chatbots everywhere.

I dunno i did see an AI video of zelenskyy punching trump which was worth seeing.

Yes, that’s great - so satisfying!

Or you can just click on the 'web' tab (which Google has now provided) at the top of your screen before typing your search into the search bar. Then you only get normal web results and no AI panel.

I just got shown this at work, have you seen this op? From the actual UCAS website, tips for writing your personal statement with AI/ChatGPT. Just...what's the point!

ChompandaGrazia · 01/03/2025 22:46

I hate the way some people seem to think it’s the fucking oracle.
There is a thread where someone is asking medical advice. A couple of replies have been people saying that they put the symptoms into chatgtp and this is what it said.
I’ve also seen people moaning that they asked Chat GTP what time the supermarket opened or the pharmacy shut and then being surprised when it was wrong.

PlantDoctor · 01/03/2025 22:51

YANBU. I work in science publishing, and a massive part of any paper being published is a robust peer review from other experts. A SHOCKING number of people are using AI to review papers. Absolutely against all policies as it's uploading someone else's work to a third party without permission, and not actually providing a scientific expert's perspective! Triggers a massive headache of informing authors and having to redo peer review.

Also it's bloody obvious so if anyone involved sees this, PLEASE don't do it!

Tried it and it brings up this thread 😂

I googled a confusing plot point from House of Cards.

The first 3 real people gave the answer. Then an AI gave a completely different answer, which I assume was incorrect (but how how would I know?) and also gave a weird detailed explanation of the plot.

ai don’t know what to believe anymore.

Ironically, ‘I’ just autocorrected to ‘ai’ 🤔

Yes. There are two phases to energy use. Training the data is a huge, front-loaded energy cost (see my first post). TBF this seems to be reduced in the latest generation of tools like DeepSeek. Then there's a small energy cost every time it's used. But because there are millions on millions of uses, again the energy cost is high in the aggregate.

Everything you do online (including posting on MN) uses energy. Streaming uses a fuckton. You can reduce the energy load by choosing a lower image quality - not everything needs to be crystal clear HD.

Emails also cost energy. You can lower your carbon footprint a bit by deleting unwanted emails and unsubscribing from email newsletters.

I think like all new technology it has a place where it can be useful. Unfortunately its very open to overuse and misuse. I fear our technology is ahead of our ability as a society to manage the repercussions of it.

Username0826485858585 · 02/03/2025 11:43

Well that's fucking scary!
I've just tried several of my usernames and think I might be off now!

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2025 12:03

I just asked chatgpt about me again to see if has got any better. 👀 😂

However the ability of an AI to scrape together info from a forum and put together a (potentially incorrect, see my supposed support for Nigel Farage) profile of posters is definitely a concern.

Actually, now I think about it, that cross-referencing of forums is new and something people who post across several platforms should be aware of.

I fucking loathe it.
It steals IP and is putting people out of work.

It relies on third-world "ghost" workers paid pennies to tag data all day, including all the worst stuff online like Al Qaeda videos, with no labour rights or protection.

It uses precious metals that fuel a war in the DRC that has killed 6 million people to date.

It uses insane amounts of water to cool the data centres, disrupting the water supply for local people and wildlife.

Its pollution causes big local spikes in respiratory diseases, with asthma deaths up by 1/3 in local areas.

It uses freaking insane amounts of energy, when we should be aiming for net zero. Training one hour of CHatGPT data uses as much energy as 80,000 households in a year. The International Energy Agency predicts that next year it will use as much energy as Japan.

It dumbs people down, eroding their cognitive skills. There have been studies showing that this applies to e.g. senior radiographers.

It comes up with complete bullshit a non-negligeable % of the time. Like pure bullshit invents stuff.

It generates vast quantities of misinformation that people cannot detect.

All so people can produce pictures of mutant five-legged kittens for a laugh.

Edited

This is about where I have got to with it!

it also depresses me because it highlights the way modern life is surface level only. Take LinkedIn and similar - or any corporate business development produce - its all AI or partly AI generated mass production shite. I have to produce this stuff myself, and can assure you that there is limited to no brain power involved. It’s just churn, which is only increasing my enthusiasm for retirement to get away from the drivel.
