Workmen in house why is it so awkward

Is it just me or do you feel really awkward when you have workmen in your house. It's like I forget how to be a normal human being. I try to stay out the way but around if they need me. They are all over the house so I can't just shut myself In a room. I just don't know what to do with myself. Their really nice blokes so it's not them it's me 🙈. Do others feel like this or am I massively overthinking this

I don’t think twice tbh. I carry on with whatever I have to do.

Crichel · 28/02/2025 09:06

Why are you at home, though? If you WFH, just use the room you usually use and tell them to avoid it for now. If you’re not working, and find it unbearable, go out?

I wish I was like this

I hate it when the window cleaners come and find myself moving from room to room (ideally without being seen)

I booked the day of to be here to let them in and be here if they need anything and to make them drinks. It's only a one day maybe 2 day thing

I also hate it.

This is what I'd be like and why I don't have a window cleaner 🤣

But do they need anything? I mean, as in, are you required to make decisions based on things that emerge as they work? I certainly wouldn’t take a day off to make workmen drinks! If you’re not absolutely required to be there to make call on the work, go out!

rurbane · 28/02/2025 09:12

I'm like this too. It's ridiculous, I probably make it more awkward than if I just got on as though they weren't there.

Firstly I'm not going to leave random people in my home if they was going to be there for weeks/months that would be different. If you don't take a day of work for workmen how do they get in the house.

This is what I'm doing, I'm sure I'm making it worse by not carrying on as normal 🤣

I hate it too. The house ends up cold as they're in and out all the time. Me, vaguely pottering from room to room.

I would leave them a key or let them in and then go to work! Though would usually WFH if I knew I was going to have to make decisions on work in progress. If you absolutely think you need to be in the house, surely there’s one room they can be asked to avoid for a few hours, and you can go and read there?

I hate this to as i always keep the heating turned off why they are here as I know they will get hot working.

I’m the same. I try to read and not a word goes in, feel awkward asking if they want drinks and then get worried I’ll mix up their requirements, jump up to my feet if anyone wants to ask me anything.

It’s if I’m holding my breath until they leave. 🙀

I can't do my job from home. Someone needs to be here at least at the start to make sure there clear on what there doing and be here at the end to check everything is OK and to pay them. My job doesn't work like that I can't just be an hour late for work I also can't have my phone on me at work if there's a problem.

Yeah I can't concentrate on anything I feel like I'm on edge the whole time they are here

Im exactly the same! I'm having a new bathroom fitted next month - absolutely dreading it! I'm hoping the weather will suddenly be warm and I can sit in the garden (unlikely). I will probably try and go out as much as possible as they will be here for a week.

Same. IDGAF who is around, I’ll do whatever I want.

Yeah I don't blame you when it's a bigger job and they will be here a while I will happily be out as much as possible.

Oh yes. I had to escape - or hid away in my office even though I actually work at the dining room table. They were lovely guys but I just felt in the way or awkward. And even when I needed to do stuff I felt kinda paralysed - hard to describe.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 28/02/2025 09:30

If I didn't have anything to get on with like putting laundry away/ironing then I'd get my laptop out, even if it's just reading news sites it gives you an anchor and a reason to be sitting around!

sugarspiceandeverythingnice12 · 28/02/2025 09:31

I agree. I always feel wierded out when I have 'workmen' in my home. I think I'm odd to feel this way , but there we are!

My neighbours give 'workmen' keys and go to work, just carrying on as normal

I couldn't do this

vitahelp · 28/02/2025 09:44

Haha! I’m exactly the same and I’m not an awkward person in any other situation! And not a chance I’m giving workmen I don’t know keys to the house/alarm codes etc 😂

mickandrorty · 28/02/2025 09:52

Yes i hate it. I'm very socially awkward, I also have awful anxiety, when my anxiety gets really bad I end up with a bad stomach, I hate going to the toilet when anybody who doesn't live in my house is here! So I get anxious that I will need to go to the toilet while they are here which then sets my stomach off. I don't know what is wrong with me 😂
