Is time speeding up? A bit woo but...(Lighthearted.)

I know that time isn't really speeding up but...
Also, I know that as you get older, time seems to go faster but I think it's since Covid, which was a time warp in itself but maybe it's more WFH, I dunno. Thoughts please?

On the other hand, I did a three month long in person course for work last year and it was so awful time seemed to go backwards.

Time is subjective

When you are 5 a year is 20% of your life
When you are 50 it’s 2%.

Yes, you're probably right. It does seem to be an odd function built into the organism of the human being though. Exactly when you would like time to last longer, it goes more quickly and then it goes more slowly again when you are really old. "I suppose it passed the day." is something I've often heard from elderly people about an activity.

I've said this for years! Back in the 80s when I was at school, weekends seemed to be a week long! This carried on into the 90s, but then we hit the 2000s and now a week speeds by in no time at all. I find it quite bizarre and disturbing! Only seems two minutes ago since it was Saturday and now we're nearly at another one!

Moonflower12 · 27/02/2025 18:47

We were saying at work, that this has been longest week ever! We couldn't believe it's only Thursday.

In my concept of time it is two weeks after Christmas. That's about right.

When I was at primary school the six weeks holiday seemed so long I'd practically forgotten what school was by September. Now my daughter's at school it feels like I'm getting her ready to go back almost as soon as she's broken up.

GooseEs · 27/02/2025 19:13

I feel like it's flying by.

Maybe because I'm in my 50s now but the weeks are just flittering by. It seems like it's Christmas every few months

And you had to go back into winter uniform whilst it was still quite hot. Handwriting hand seemed to have forgotten what it was meant to do as well.

I got all excited yesterday because I saw they'd put the Dark Knight films on Amazon.
"Ooo the new batman films, I've not seen them yet.."

Then I saw the release years.. and cried (I didn't cry, I did wonder where the time has gone.. the first one is 20 years old..... 😭)

BoudiccaRising · 27/02/2025 19:19

I’ve been saying this for years, it’s definitely speeding up. Everyone says oh it’s because you’re getting older, but is it? You can’t ask kids if they think it’s going faster as they have nothing to compare it with.

(In reality I know it’s because I’m on my phone far too much and the time just runs away whereas when I was a kid there was nothing to do and we spent most of the time being bored so time would drag on and on and on)

Redheadedstepchild · 27/02/2025 19:24

Then there's the celebrity surprise age phenomenon.

Keanu Reeves is 60!
Brad Pitt is 61!

No! No! It isn't real!

But galaxies are spiralling outwards and as they do time is slowing down.

Let's call the astro physicists! Where's Brian Cox when you need him?

My 7yo frequently comments on how fast time goes... so it's not just us adults!

We were saying at work, that this has been longest week ever! We couldn't believe it's only Thursday.

We had the opposite - two of us actually thought it was Tuesday today! And a lot of people were saying how quickly February has gone.

Interested in this thing about the Earth spin spinning faster.... it isn't is it?

Now that is worrying. You need to do an experiment - the summer holidays would be an ideal time. Take all his devices away, chuck him outside from dawn till dusk with nothing but a stick of chalk and a squeezy washing up bottle full of water and see if he feels the same after 6 weeks 🤔

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/02/2025 20:54

According to that mophead Einstein...

'An object in motion experiences time dilation, meaning that when an object is moving very fast it experiences time more slowly than when it is at rest.'

...so we shouldn't get fined for speeding in our motor cars, in fact, we should be rewarded because if time goes more slowly we will end up paying more tax. (I think 🤔)

Redheadedstepchild · 27/02/2025 20:56

Let's defer to wikipedia which does indeed say that the earth is spinning a bit faster:

It does feel like time’s been in fast forward, especially post-Covid! WFH and constant changes definitely make it seem like days blur together. But yeah, those long, painful in-person courses feel like they stretch time to infinity! Maybe time is just playing tricks on us. 😅

Huckleberries · 27/02/2025 21:03

Redheadedstepchild · 27/02/2025 20:56

That's not something a human would notice though.

actually a lot of time has gone fast for me, even January!

oakkiln · 27/02/2025 21:04

I agree with PP that for a five year old a year is 1/5 of their life. For me 1/50th

A lifetime is like a toilet roll. It goes quicker the closer you get to the end!
