I clicked on the little die icon beside the date which showed a message saying something like the solution was 2 unconnected words chosen at random. This may explain some things!

Thanks @MarmiteWine that will explain it. Curiously, you only get that icon on a phone, I use a laptop - though why they've gone from themed to unthemed is a puzzle. Although I did wonder if it was AI choosing the words because I put today's words into Google and it came up with a peculiar but relevant theme.

That's interesting that you don't see the icon on your laptop @BasilParsley. Not a great deal of help to you. I've assumed they're just out of ideas for themed puzzles at the moment. I know I've spotted the icon occasionally recently but have been too keen to solve the puzzle to remember to click on it.
