Found a false nail in my house

I can't believe I'm making one of these threads

I just found a false nail in my hallway. I don't ever wear them. My MIL was here yesterday, but I think it unlikely she had false nails due to her line of work.

My mind has immediately gone to my husband is having an affair. Is this a totally nuts leap? My heart is beating and I feel like crying.

I have trust issues due to a whacky childhood in that I think the worst of people sometimes, so I am doubting my instincts.

My husband is the last person anyone would think would cheat, and it would be logistically near impossible due to life circumstances. But... why is there a false nail in my house? Confused

My gut reaction is to ask him, but surely he would just lie? I can't think how else I could gather info - my husband very often gives me his phone eg if I'm popping out to the shops and mine is dead (I am rubbish at keeping it charged), he would give me his to take. He opens his texts and WhatsApp's in front of me all the time, I really doubt there's anything to find.

There is also his work phone, and work realistically is the only place he'd be able to come about an affair partner. But he's a very anxious person when it comes to work. I really cannot imagine I'd find anything there as his work has strict rules on what the phone is used for and he'd be worried it would lead to him getting in trouble. But there might be something there.

Am I being crazy? Can anyone talk me down?

I'm just heading out to meet a friend so won't be able to read this for a while. Please be kind :(

My first instinct is that it has come in on the bottom of someone’s shoe.

BakedAl · 26/02/2025 13:35

That would not be my first thought if I found a false nail in my house. More likely someone trod on it and then it fell off when they walked in the house.

Thebusinesswilljuststealyoursoul · 26/02/2025 13:35

If it's in your front hall it could have blown in from outside and was maybe dropped by a delivery worker/neighbour?

Send a picture to MIL telling her you found her nail from yesterday!
When she replies saying it's not hers, tell hubby and watch his face!

Yes, a false nail in the hallway definitely screams it's come in wiht a shoe.

In my house, here are a bunch of other ways a false nail could land up lying around somewhere:

DD loves false nails and often has them to play with with her friends. Her or one of them could easily have lost one - they do it all the time.
My cleaners could well have false nails and have lost one.
Any number of people come in and out of my house, who could have lost one. In the last few days alone we had DD's friend's mum collect her, two sets of workmen who could have had a stray nail from a girlfriend or child of their own on their person, friends of DS and DD.
DS is a teenager and while he doesn't currently have female friends over, we seemt o have a never ending parade of teenage boys int he house and I could easily imagine one of them stole/took a nail from a girl, or had one on them from being around girls etc.

From what you've said about your husband, it's extremely unlikely that's he's brought someone back to your house that he's having an affair with!

Have you just gone out and noticed it?
Have you just come in and noticed it?
Who else has been in the hallway very recently?
Has anyone been on public transport that has come into the house?

I'd be looking at countless things before jumping to an affair in this scenario

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 26/02/2025 14:11

Do you have any children? one of their friends? Either that or it has been walked in?

offmynut · 26/02/2025 14:14

I found a false nail in my room the other day i live alone it must have been on the bottom of my shoe at some point that day.

ThejoyofNC · 26/02/2025 14:16

A false nail was likely stuck on with some kind of glue, meaning it could very easily get stuck to a bag/coat/shoe whilst out in public.

CuteEasterBunny · 26/02/2025 14:19

I think it must have been trailed in, especially since it was in the hallway.

It’s strange that you’ve jumped to cheating. You obviously don’t fully trust him.

onwardandupwards · 26/02/2025 14:22

I found one in my hall way and I live with just my kids so one of us must of walked it in on our shoes.

That would be my first thought too. I wouldn't immediately assume DH was having an affair.

Blarn · 26/02/2025 14:24

A shoe or do you have small children? If either of my dds saw a false nail in the street they would absolutely be picking it up to take it home!

Miaowzabella · 26/02/2025 14:33

Blew in, tracked in, dog/child brought it in.........it's not a strong piece of evidence on its own. Do you have any other grounds for suspicion?

treesandsun · 26/02/2025 14:57

I called at a friend's one day and she wasn't in so posted something through her door - a nail came off and I didn't notice. She messaged me later and thanked me for whatever it was I had posted. She also asked me - have you lost a nail - and I said yes - I wondered where it was! She said I was going to be having words with Bob - I think she was only partly joking - so I do know from experience there can be an innocent explanation for a false nail appearing!

Apollo365 · 26/02/2025 15:07

You need to check with MIL before you go getting stressed about this, but as others have said would easily have come in on a shoe!
agree with PP and check husbands face when you tell him.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 26/02/2025 15:07

These things get EVERWHERE. They can get stuck on, or in, things and be transported. They fall off like nobody's business, and are horrible things to see. So it's entirely possible there's an innocent explanation.

Omg this use to happen with our old post lady when i was a child long red ones with the sticky back to them never happened all the time but it happened a few time to us and other neighbours as well.
She was lovely always said sorry for the nail its a free gift.

Seaside31 · 26/02/2025 15:09

False nail under your pillow - yes, I’d probably jump up some crazy conclusions. But, lying on the hall floor it’s more than likely come in on someone’s shoe

FrenchandSaunders · 26/02/2025 15:10

If he was having an affair I doubt he would have brought her back to your house. I know it happens, and I've read it on here, but it's not the norm.

ItGhoul · 26/02/2025 15:15

It will have likely been caught on someone's shoe or clothes or something. Honestly, don't worry about it.
