Found a false nail in my house

I can't believe I'm making one of these threads

I just found a false nail in my hallway. I don't ever wear them. My MIL was here yesterday, but I think it unlikely she had false nails due to her line of work.

My mind has immediately gone to my husband is having an affair. Is this a totally nuts leap? My heart is beating and I feel like crying.

I have trust issues due to a whacky childhood in that I think the worst of people sometimes, so I am doubting my instincts.

My husband is the last person anyone would think would cheat, and it would be logistically near impossible due to life circumstances. But... why is there a false nail in my house? Confused

My gut reaction is to ask him, but surely he would just lie? I can't think how else I could gather info - my husband very often gives me his phone eg if I'm popping out to the shops and mine is dead (I am rubbish at keeping it charged), he would give me his to take. He opens his texts and WhatsApp's in front of me all the time, I really doubt there's anything to find.

There is also his work phone, and work realistically is the only place he'd be able to come about an affair partner. But he's a very anxious person when it comes to work. I really cannot imagine I'd find anything there as his work has strict rules on what the phone is used for and he'd be worried it would lead to him getting in trouble. But there might be something there.

Am I being crazy? Can anyone talk me down?

I'm just heading out to meet a friend so won't be able to read this for a while. Please be kind :(

Carried in somehow off the street sounds the most likely explanation.

Nail12 · 26/02/2025 15:57

Just got home and looked at my phone - I honestly did not even think that it could have come in on a shoe. That's definitely the most likely explanation judging from where I found it.

To answer questions, our children are toddlers so obviously not from them or their friends or anything like that. I cannot think of a single friend of mine who wears false nails, and I've not had anyone round in weeks anyway (except MIL as mentioned). This is why it really threw me - but yes it now seems very likely it's come in from a shoe!!

I'm so pleased I posted on here 😅 I knew the wise women of mumsnet would have the answers - although I genuinely thought you'd all be giving me ducks in a row type advice. How daft I feel now, but I'm so pleased I didn't cause stress and make myself look a tit to my husband. Thanks everyone ❤️

Have you been cheated on in the past OP?
It can really mess your head up.

I’d honestly just think eww and never think of it again.

Nail12 · 26/02/2025 16:09

@VeryVeryCross I've not been cheated on, but I had an unusual/difficult childhood - if I went into the specifics it would be clear why I struggle with trust

But you're definitely right, trust issues do make it hard to think clearly

My teen daughter has them in her handbag, pockets and now in my washer and dryer. Possible it got picked up someone thinking it something else, or in a re-used plastic bag from somewhere. Or it’s been around there ages and has just emerged.

BridgetCleaver · 26/02/2025 16:20

They stick really easily in the grips on trainers

My first instinct is that it has come in on the bottom of someone’s shoe.

Yup. I found one in my car. I don't wear false nails. I'm a widow and live alone.

Tumbleweed44 · 26/02/2025 21:25

My first thought is that your DH is a serial killer and he has disposed of a body and a false nail fell off the body!

I am trying to write a novel though so there is that 😂. My imagination is in over drive.

Honestly, he probably walked it in especially the cheap tacky ones (which they all are imo).

This.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 26/02/2025 21:36

If I was a woman having an affair with a married man and was brazen enough to go to his house for sex and lost a nail, I would make sure to turn the place upside down looking for it. People know when these nails come off, the fact that it was just there suggests its innocent.

Christ0nABike · 26/02/2025 21:41

You should keep it with you at all times and try to find the lady with only nine nails, like a Cinderella situation but darker…

Far more likely it’s come in from the street so I hope you’ve not LTB.

"Nailed it" ;)

CuteKoalas · 26/02/2025 21:47

Has a dc picked it up at a park or similar as ' treasure' my ds is always picking up random bits .

Guavafish1 · 26/02/2025 21:48

Cleaner?

Maddy70 · 26/02/2025 21:50

Cleaner
Stuck in the tread of someone in the households shoe
Avon lady
Literally any visitors

SpikeGilesSandwich · 26/02/2025 21:53

They are everywhere, I had to stop my DS picking one up at he found at the bus stop Envy I'd definitely be blaming him rather than DH if I found one in my house!

SpikeGilesSandwich · 26/02/2025 21:54

*that

Mydahliasareshit · 26/02/2025 21:54

If there's been a female courier / postie / grocery delivery / it could so easily have come in from them. Is your chap really likely to have brought a woman into your home?

umbrellasusie · 26/02/2025 22:15

Well I'm a postie and I've lost many a nail delivering mail in letterboxes.
The fact it's in the hall and not in your bed speaks volumes really.
