Help me find a practical butter dish!🧈

Is it just me, or are all butter dishes just a bit crap?

Latest purchase has a bamboo lid that fits into a china dish, but it just gets covered in butter and becomes so tricky to remove due to being wedged into the dish and causing a sort of vacuum - I usually end up with the dish itself slipping out of your hand and using a knife to lever the lid out!

All I want is a basic dish with a lid/cover that doesn’t slip out of your hand and is big enough to fit a 250mg butter pack.

Is this too much to ask?🫠

(Lighthearted-ish😅)

I have dropped, bashed so many, I now use a plastic sandwich box, upside down, which fits a pat of butter perfectly and bounces wonderfully, take it from me. It is the smallest of this stack from Lakeland https://www.lakeland.co.uk/27238/5-lakeland-clip-rectangular-nestable-storage-containers

That's like I use only I have glass ones.

@Montuaklighthouse this 🙂

Ooh, I've never seen anything like this! 😍 How does it work? You put the butter into water??

Ferro · 26/02/2025 20:07

I definitely had the glass cow dish at one time and now I'm wondering what happened to it.

CymruChris · 26/02/2025 21:05

There was a brilliant thread on butter dishes not long ago. I have the Le Creuset one, had for many years and love it!

We've got a butter dish each!

I've got a Cath Kidston one
Dh has a whale
Dd1 has a le crueset heart
Dd2 has snoopy

When my dc were little they each had a small hotel individual butter dish.

I have this one from Amazon. It’s essentially a plate with a lid. The butter is accessible, and it’s easy to wash up.

I got one of these when I was a student about (oh god) 30 years ago and it is still going strong. It's great as you can put it in the dishwasher when it gets too manky and it has a picture of a cow on the lid.

I thought this design would have long gone but you can still get them from loads of places, just google glass cow butter dish

I have these. I have two so one can wash whilst the other is in use. They're about £6 on Amazon. Best butter dish by far. And you can easily see if you're about to run out and need to start warming the next block.

I've got on of these, charity shop find, but I use it upside down with the pat of butter on the lid and the bottom on the top. I know I don't see the cow but it's cleaner for longer.

I can totally picture it!

Maybe we had one when I was a kid back in the 70s?

Ahh I think my nan has one of those! It sounds so familiar!

It’s only the Cobalt (blue) one that’s out of stock. They DO have the Gold and the Geranium (red).

I have the gold one. Because I’m fancy. 😛😂

Ohh ok, another contender from M&S!

At this rate I’m going to have to make a spreadsheet and ponder the decision over a few days..🤓🤓🤓

Montuaklighthouse · 26/02/2025 22:13

I didn’t expect such a responseGrin

The depth of feeling for humble the butter dish has made my day!🧈

It’s been annoying me for years! I’m so glad I’m not alone in my butter-dish despairWine

I'm such a saddo - but if I had the space, some kind of basket or container for eggs on my counter would be the BOMB. But I don't. So they stay in a box in the fridge. sigh.

<stands up>

I feel VERY STRONGLY about this subject.

Point I: I cannot and will never fathom the butter dish design that favours a deep dish with a lid, and not a flat base with a dome. Having your butter sunk into a dish gives no access for the blade of a knife, meaning the user needs to dig straight down into the pat and brace it against the sides so that the whole thing gets covered in butter and the butter gets all crummy and messy and gross.

The ONLY acceptable butter dish design in my view is the flat base with dome; and - point II - in my view, the only acceptable butter dish material is ceramic, which helps control the temperature. I have seen butter dishes composed of glass, meaning that if your butter dish lives on your kitchen counter and is ever exposed to sunlight, you are essentially melting it like a shipwrecked sailor trying to start a fire on a desert island. Like others have already mentioned, the Le Creuset dish is the way forward. Plus it comes in pretty colours.

<sits down>

Everything she said! I have a Le Crueset dish and I love it. We get through a block of butter a week, it goes straight in the dishwasher and back on the counter. I hate the dishes that the butter goes into.

rach2713 · 26/02/2025 22:26

@Montuaklighthouse I got mine from amazon my husband and family laughed at me for getting it until it came and seen how cool it was now the family members who laughed have all got them 😋

GettingOlderandBetter · 26/02/2025 22:37

Curlymam88 · 26/02/2025 10:34

Here is mine. Does the job well. Came with a butter knife that you can keep on top, although we don't use it.

We have a very similar one but it’s affectionately known as the penis dish thanks to the genital shaped knife holder on the lid😁we don’t use the knife it’s too small to be useful. The dish is ok but has to go in the dishwasher between blocks of butter because it gets messy.

LoserWinner · 26/02/2025 22:44

I had one similar to this, which would meet your requirements: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/396208004545?

NiggleNoggle · 26/02/2025 22:47

Double-walled stainless steel. I've had one for decades and it still looks like new/keeps the butter cool/goes in the dishwasher:
