Put it on a few local Facebook groups. You could also take it to a local vet and have it scanned for a microchip.

How does a cat “seem lost”? Hanging around? Could be hoping for food.

worrisomeasset · 26/02/2025 08:55

It’s always worth taking the cat to a vet for a microchip scan in these situations. One of ours that went missing was returned this way.

We are trying to build it's confidence so we can approach it and get it to the vets to be scanned. It's so upsetting. I'm not on Facebook but will be asking someone who is to advertise it. I don't want identifying details of the cat though incase they are not genuine. Thank you very much for you advice.

Yes. It's been hanging around a non residential area crying all day and night. We are looking after it while we try to find it's owners.

Thank you. We will do that as soon as we can get near to the cat. It's too shy at the moment. Thanok you

This is what cats do! They roam around! He/she likely has an owner but likes to hang out in your garden. All of our previous cats have had different neighbours presuming they're strays as we never used collars for a number of reasons but all were microchipped.

Meyla · 26/02/2025 09:03

Thank you. Yes this cat is not hanging around my garden. It is in a non residential area. There are no houses for miles and it does seem distressed.

OP posts:
528htz · 26/02/2025 09:05

Does it look underweight, dirty or disheveled? This can indicate being lost as well. Any obvious injuries?

I would try to lure it into your house with some tinned tuna and then get it into a carrier to get a microchip scan.
The poor thing might have been abandoned by owners who have moved away as well. This happens more often than people would think unfortunately.

Meyla · 26/02/2025 09:05

I do understand cat behaviour. I have two of my own. Yes we are hoping the cat is microchipped so we can trace the rightful owners. We just want the cat safe and back home. Thank you.

Your local cats protection will probably lend you a trap which you could lure it into.

Thank you. Yes we are trying to coax the cat at the moment. We have an outdoor shelter there. Unfortunately we are not by my house. Or any houses. We will not give up until we get it scanned. Somehow. It doesn't look too unwell at he moment. Just distressed.

Thank you. I am contacting cats protection today. I will ask them about this.

If its yowling, might it be a female on heat, calling for a tom?

Meyla · 26/02/2025 09:14

Thank you to everybody for your suggestions. It's very difficult between coaxing the cat and scaring it away.

Yes it has been yowling actually. Do you think it could have got lost roaming if it was on heat ? Thank you.

Sorry for quoting in the wrong place sometimes. I have only ever posted once before. But this is important. Thank you.

I have rang cats protection they may be able to lend us a trap. If not out on loan and with a possible waiting time. If we can't get it into a cat carrier. So thank you for that suggestion

It might be worth phoning round any other cat rescues in the area as well because they'll have traps too.

528htz · 26/02/2025 10:31

They sell them for £60 on Amazon if money isn't a problem, but obviously it's a lot if you couldn't afford it.

Thank you. That's a good idea. I know a rescue I got my own cats from

Thanks again. Cats protection said if it carries on into next week. So we will keep trying to coax it. If no traps are available to loan I may well buy one. Will check with them what type for safety first . Sod the money there's two of us. Hopefully it won't come to that and we can get it to a vet. Thank you for caring.

I can understand you wanting to help it, I'd be the same, I love animals and have my own cats.

Good luck OP. This must be so distressing. Can you update us on progress?

Yes I think it could have. But it's also possible that it isn't lost, just very much in the grip of hormones.... Having said that I don't know how long a female in a tom-less landscape goes on looking or how far she might roam...
