Too Good To Go App

Has anyone tried the Too Good To Go app?

For those that don't know, it's the app that saves food from going to waste. You can purchase a surprise bag of goodies from a supermarket, bakery or even restaurant at a highly reduced price. It saves these places throwing good food away at the end of the day.

I'm interested to know if anyone has had any great surprises, or alternatively disappointing ones.

You soon learn the exact time a particular branch appears on the app, generally 16 mins after the current day collection closes.

Then you have to be fastest finger to get a bag when released

I hate things like prawn sandwiches but know my partner will eat anything so we are safe with Greggs /costa etc. Costa generally we get vegan rolls as they are the least popular.

If you say you are vegan etc on the app if just means you only see bags marked vegan. Doesn't mean any bag will be made vegan for you.

that's the same on mine with regards to the vegetarian and vegan options only shows those types of restaurants not veggie/vegan bags from each restaurant

i didn't realise you could select only vegetarian options at certain restaurants? at least i can't see that on my app you can only select from vegetarian restaurants not vegetarian options from each restaurant 🤔

Sorry if it was me that was unclear - you can mark your whole profile veggie/vegan/eats everything.

I believe Starbucks will offer a veggie bag and a non veggie bag, for one, but it will definitely reduce the number of options you are shown.

Local independent bakeries are best ime. There's a lovely bakery where I've had bags with several loaves of sourdough, pastries and filled focaccia, for just a couple of quid. And there's a nice indy primarily doughnut shop that does a bag of mixed doughnuts and sometimes nice sandwiches.

Costa are overpriced and poor selection from my experiences, I've had three identical cheese and tomato toasties in a bag, for example. Starbucks is a better selection they seem to give three sandwich items all different and two cake type items.

Morrisons and Aldi hit and miss - sometimes really good, other times loads of basic sliced bread or cheap rolls, bags of salad, Aldi often give damaged items as well which isn't always great. Like I got an open bag of almonds once, and a partly unwrapped chocolate bunny - who knows who's been touching that!

The one type I never bother with is greengrocers. Maybe it's just unlucky me, but I tried a couple of local indy greengrocer places and every time I just got a box with a load of really sad and damaged fruit and veg. Talking broccoli gone yellow, black bananas, badly bruised/rotting apples, clementines that were all soft and squishy. I'm fine with sticking slightly past best veg in a soup but there was little I was willing to use from them, had to throw most of it away.

If what they have left at the end of the day is three identical sandwiches, then what you will get is three identical sandwiches. If they are making up 2-3 bags and have several things left, they might mix them up for variety, but they can’t add what they don’t have,

I have not tried bags from Aldi or anything like that. I usually get a Costa one (I tend to be in Costa anyway). I once got a bag of 9 different cakes, and they asked if I wanted another with another 9 in (it had not sold). I have also had trays of rocky road and granola bars (so 12 portions of each). Lately, it has been a mix of sandwiches and toasties. The toasties come up nice in my air fryer.
I got a Greggs one... 8 sausages rolls, 4 baguettes, 12 donuts and 2 yum yums. They tend to sell out fast though.

I keep meaning to try the independent places here too.

If you have a Dobbies near you, they do a bag of plants.

The last time I got one was Costa. I arrived and the guy chose 3 cakes (flapjack, shortbread…..)for me from the pretty much full shelves.
It was sort of pointless - clearly not left over stuff and cost about the same as I’d pay for 3 cakes, without being able to choose them…..

If it was at the end of the day and the cakes had been out all day, they may not have been able to be put out the next day. Or some places would rather fulfil the order than cancel the bags.

It should have cost you a fair bit less than full price though.

I’ve had a couple from Cooplands which are really good value- they load it up with everything they’ve got left over so stacks of pasties etc, last time we got about 16 tumours which DH and the kids were over the moon about! Morrisons was a bit eh, probably wouldn’t bother with that again.

By accident I was in a cafe and they had not been able to put stuff on the app so went round the tables offering bags. I took one for DS packed lunch the next day .

I love this app. Greggs and Baynes the baker is always a winner in this house. Never had a bad bag yet. I used the Morrisons cafe once which I was pleased with but oddly contained 4 bottles of chocolate sauce that you would put on ice cream lol

Morrisons do a cafe ingredients one. I accidentally got one once and ended up with a big bag of Yorkshire puddings, a roast veg mix, two massive cottage pies and two massive bags of cheese sauce. Thankfully my freezer had space

I am a regular in my local Costa, and often get freebies like this too.

Crazymadchickenlady · 26/02/2025 19:37

I’ve ordered a costa one for tomorrow evening as I am in town then anyway and have to walk past it. Am excited to see what’s in it! Daughter loves their cheese toasties so hopefully we get one of those and can make it in the air fryer.

Dd used it a fair bit as a student. Things like a late carvery for dinner that night, or a bag of sushi options from the local takeaway sushi place.

The sandwich shop often gave her 3 or 4 large baguette sandwiches though she didn't get to choose which ones obviously. Her and a friend would eat one each and then they gave the remaining ones to homeless people nearby as they passed.

The supermarket one - can't remember which shop - was fruit and veg last their best mainly.
