Too Good To Go App

Has anyone tried the Too Good To Go app?

For those that don't know, it's the app that saves food from going to waste. You can purchase a surprise bag of goodies from a supermarket, bakery or even restaurant at a highly reduced price. It saves these places throwing good food away at the end of the day.

I'm interested to know if anyone has had any great surprises, or alternatively disappointing ones.

OP posts:

Yeah, I think it’s really best if you are passing anyway so it’s a bonus (Costa bag of muffins, say) and/or you know your local shop (nearest Co op to me on the scheme has lots on a Sunday which can often be frozen!). Where I’ve driven and ended up with semi stale pastries, I have crossed those off my list 😀

burnoutbabe · 26/02/2025 08:26

Agreed

I only go for ones where it takes me somewhere I am going to anyway. No special efforts!

And avoid supermarkets as can get a totally random selection. I got 20 plus bags of reduced rolls from Morrisons once. Had then in my freezer for ages. (And gave away to neighbors)

Any shop where you just get one thing are good -Krispy keeeme or the cupcake shop. Or sushi.

I always check in store what I have and ask if it appears under promised value so they can correct right away.

I'm overweight as it is so why would I want to buy a load of random ultra processed food that I may not even like that needs to be eaten immediately? As far as I can see you mostly get bakery type stuff which I try my best to avoid.

So I'm not tempted. Good luck with your research OP.

It's not all UPFs. There's a lot of sushi and I've had salads and bircher muesli from Pret. You just have to pick your stored.

popandchoc · 26/02/2025 11:31

Had some good ones from greggs. The guy let us pick a couple of extra bits off the shelf too.
Had one from Costa which wasn't as great as was only sandwiches.

roses2 · 26/02/2025 11:47

Used this a few years ago but stopped as the shops started to give me the dregs of going bad food. Just downloaded again and seen my local Gails Bakery - will give it another go!

The purpose of it is to sell food that is at or just before the BBE date, to the value of the stated bag (bags of salad unreduced can be £2 or more each). The shop has no obligation to give you a selection.

So definitely don’t order ones that are out of your way etc as you may waste your petrol money.

ETA I ended up leaving the FB group as there were a lot of posts complaining that they didn’t get a full meal or whatever, and that just is not the point of the app.

Edited

Exactly this - it's a food waste app, not a discounted shop. You get whatever it is they have left, and if that's just bread or salad that's the risk you take. However, as others have said - if you go for a Costa or Greggs you're more likely to get an idea of what you will get. Also check out the ratings. I don't bother with anyone with less than a 4*. My favourite is a cheeky Toby Carvery breakfast when I'm hungover 😂

jennylamb1 · 26/02/2025 12:33

Agree with checking out the ratings, I don't order one if it's from somewhere with a less than 4/5 rating. Co-op are good and generally include a mix of healthy things and others. A lot of stuff can go straight in the freezer. It's a good scheme and saves money and food waste.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/02/2025 12:35

Our daughter’s family have, several times. Always been pleasantly surprised.

TeddyBearHug · 26/02/2025 12:37

tried it after seeing the great hauls people had got on facebook, did a greggs one but only got a tuna baguette (don't eat tuna) a ham and cheese toastie (don't eat pork) a mozzarella pasta, fruit pot and 2 belgian buns. may seem
ok but couldn't eat some of it so wasn't worth it for me and was disappointed considering the massive hauls i had seen on facebook and ending up having to waste the sandwiches anyway as i couldn't eat them. i know it's a gamble so wasn't annoyed but wouldn't use again.

FloofyKat · 26/02/2025 12:41

As others have said, can be a bit of a mixed bag (pun intended 😂).In my area it’s mostly bakery-style bags that are available or Costa, which are no good for someone like me trying to cut down on the carbs. My local M&S (in a garage) was so poor I complained and got a refund. Best is usually my local Waitrose (also in a garage).

notatinydancer · 26/02/2025 12:45

Yes. I quite often get them from local BP garage - M&S food.
Also Pret.
And Aldi which are not a as good.
There's a local pizza takeaway as well.

Honestly, if you don't eat pork, I wouldn't have opted for Greggs, home of the sausage roll!

You can set yourself as vegetarian on the app, which might be worth doing if there are several types of meat/fish you don't eat.

TeddyBearHug · 26/02/2025 13:44

i'm not vegetarian or vegan i just wouldn't use it again not worth it for me and wouldn't want to do a veggie one anyway and end up with 20 bags of salad i won't eat 😂

I know you aren't veggie, but for somewhere that sells sandwiches, getting ham, sausage or tuna has got to be a fair risk and veggie is currently the only optionality, I think.

You wouldn't get bags of salad from Greggs anyway, and if they were going spare in a shop, you would get them in either a veggie or non-veggie bag.

Sunat45degrees · 26/02/2025 13:48

The ons I've checked out tend to be more bakery type stuff or things I wouldn't want to eat at that time of day.

But I'm planning to get DS on it for the easter and summer holidays- him and his buddies are often out and about playing football/basketball etc and then land up starving while still 3 miles from home at 4pm!!! I figure this is perfect for a bunch of bottomless-pit teenage boys who have very limited budgets.

Sunat45degrees · 26/02/2025 13:50

Having said that, just looged onto the app and there are a bunch that weren't ont here when I logged ont he first time. Maybe a different time of day? eg the M&S local near us could be great. Also still really good for DS and his friends.

yorkshirebird2382 · 26/02/2025 13:51

On the app others rate how "good" the bags are and ive found that helpful and accurate in terms of what you end up getting. We haven't been disappointed so far!

I think more shops get added over time eg Gail's didn't used to be on there near my work but is now.

Crazymadchickenlady · 26/02/2025 13:54

Yo Sushi from the supermarket is good. I had a Toby Carvery one which was awful. Was mainly mash potatoes with a few peas in it and a few burnt/dried out pigs in blankets with gravy tipped over it. No carvery meat or any other veg in it at all.

yeah, that's probably true. I just used the map function and I see there's a coffee and donut place right next to the park DS and his friends go to to play basketball that seems to have routine collection at about 4pm. I see a horde of 6 ft teenagers descending down there in their future! Grin

Whiskyfromsmallglasses · 26/02/2025 14:06

I love this app. Greggs and Baynes the baker is always a winner in this house. Never had a bad bag yet. I used the Morrisons cafe once which I was pleased with but oddly contained 4 bottles of chocolate sauce that you would put on ice cream lol

burnoutbabe · 26/02/2025 14:07

You soon learn the exact time a particular branch appears on the app, generally 16 mins after the current day collection closes.

Then you have to be fastest finger to get a bag when released

I hate things like prawn sandwiches but know my partner will eat anything so we are safe with Greggs /costa etc. Costa generally we get vegan rolls as they are the least popular.

If you say you are vegan etc on the app if just means you only see bags marked vegan. Doesn't mean any bag will be made vegan for you.

steelingmyself · 26/02/2025 14:20

The Krispy Kreme near us let you pick any 6 doughnuts you like for £4.15.

I get that occasionally and on others you get given a pre made up box. Just good luck if you get a choice.

TeddyBearHug · 26/02/2025 14:29

i didn't realise you could select only vegetarian options at certain restaurants? at least i can't see that on my app you can only select from vegetarian restaurants not vegetarian options from each restaurant 🤔
