Do you still print boarding passes / AirBnB confirmation / train tickets etc?

Random question... currently doing online check-in for some flights and wondering if I really need to print the boarding passes? In theory I can do everything on my phone but... When we last travelled (Christmas) I did print everything and take it with us, but didn't use any of it as everything was available on my phone and it was much easier than faffing around with paper copies.

Do you still print these docs off and carry them with you when you travel?

No you don't have to.
I do because I'm middle aged and it winds up teenage dd.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 24/02/2025 08:58

We were on an Easyjet flight that was delayed by around five hours - snow in Luton.
People's phones ran out of charge, huge confusion over who was sitting where. Aircrew tearing their hair out.
Those of us with printed boarding passes had no issue at all.

I don't use a smart phone or apps, so yes, I'll always have a hard copy. :) Does get harder and harder with each passing year. I think Ryanair want to go completely paperless soon and force 100% of their customers onto their app.

Yes. I like to have a back up in case my phone fails/gets lost or stolen.

Cheeseandapplechutney · 24/02/2025 09:05

Nope. Not always possible to print off anyway - have just come back from a 3 country holiday, so 2 long haul flights and 4 shorter ones and no facilities to print - on my phone was absolutely fine. Used 3 different airlines.

minipie · 24/02/2025 09:07

No. As PP says I often can’t print off the return boarding passes anyway eg if online check in happens while away.

I have started carrying a charger & local adaptor plug in my hand luggage though since so much depends on my phone.

UselessMumAlert · 24/02/2025 09:08

Yes, but only the flight details, and I put them in a different bag to my phone and saved the pdf to the cloud. Didn't bother with the hotel or advance booked attractions. Would probably have printed train confirmation if I was travelling in a different country, wouldn't for travelling here.

Didn't need them, did everything on the phone, will still print the flight details next time I fly.

TickingAlongNicely · 24/02/2025 09:10

I used my phone for boarding passes at Christmas, it was a right pain with multiple on one device.
With just one per phone it would have been fine.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 24/02/2025 09:12

If I can, yes. Like a PP, it's in case of phone lost/broken/out of battery. Not always possible for the return journey though.

Thetrainer · 24/02/2025 09:13

I do.

Phones can be lost / stolen or malfunction.

Always have two sources of information and a portable charger.

I left my phone behind recently and it's so difficult to get through even an ordinary working day without parking app, passwords, notes, to do list etc

This 100%.

I always have a paper copy. All sorts can halpen.. delays, no battery, no signal, no internet abroad, phone stolen etc. It's just one less thing to worry about and a few pieces of folded A4 take up no space at all. I always use the digital versions but it's peace of mind having the backup.

Halsall · 24/02/2025 09:14

I haven’t travelled by air for quite a while but I always print train tickets if given the choice between hard copy and e-tickets.

I recently got delayed and I’d been issued with e-tickets without a choice. I claimed compensation for the delay and it’s been refused - I suspect because the e-ticket doesn’t show the ticket price. I’ll now have to spend hours arguing the toss with the train company whereas a screenshot of a paper ticket would have shown all the required details.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 24/02/2025 09:14

I always do, because I worry that my something will happen to my phone and I'd like to have backup.

TroysMammy · 24/02/2025 09:20

I have printed train tickets and theatre tickets. I don't want to faff about when I'm in the queue looking for tickets on my phone and hoping there is a decent signal. I would also get flustered when it was my turn.

My train journey was delayed recently so I took a photo of the tickets, before they were swallowed up by the ticket barrier and claimed a refund on my phone in minutes.

Stai · 24/02/2025 09:24

No, haven’t done for years. Most things can be added to your wallet so no need for WiFi or reception, or just take a screenshot. Or go to the desk and they can print it out for you, just show your passport to confirm name. I’ve never had an issue.

evtheria · 24/02/2025 09:26

I do because I was raised by a parent who had the special folder, the multi-page itinerary, the print outs, etc. I'm not that Type A but I'd rather look at some pages (I highlight key info) than scroll through PDFs on my phone. Also always anxious of battery dying.

SnuffleTruffleHound · 24/02/2025 09:27

We nearly got caught out in Egypt, they won’t let you into the airport without proof of ticket. We only had it in our phones (email) but had no internet access. Luckily someone let us tether to them but otherwise we’d have been stuck!

Cyclebabble · 24/02/2025 09:29

I am a belt and braces sort of person, so I do print a copy. If there is a battery issue or the phone gets damaged in some way I just know that Ryanair would charge a fortune to sort it.

SabrinaThwaite · 24/02/2025 09:29

I do - belt and braces. I take a battery bank and phone charger with me too.

herea · 24/02/2025 09:29

We do for plane and international train tickets. Not theatre tickets, we're in London so it's only local journey. It's so cheap and quick to do on my home printer that there's no reason not to do it.

AirBnB tends to be just a code to access a building so we dont bother printing that.

For UK train tickets I always opt to print from a ticket machine. Then it's the rail company who is paying for the paper tickets, and their machines swallow the ticket at the end, so you don't have to dispose of them.

verycloakanddaggers · 24/02/2025 09:29

If important (priority travel) I think it's a good back up.

For the cinema, no.

Igmum · 24/02/2025 09:30

No, but I screenshot them and add them to my Apple wallet and I always have pockets full of portable chargers.

isaknowsbest · 24/02/2025 09:30

No never but some of these examples make me think I should .

WaltzingWaters · 24/02/2025 09:31

I don’t print anything unless it specifically says to. We don’t have a printer at home, so anything that needs printing I need to ask DH to print off at work, so a bit of a faff.

I’ll always have a battery pack with me on a journey, so no concerns with running out of battery, the only issue would be if my phone was lost/stolen.

Edited to add I’ll always screenshot tickets too, so no issues if I have signal issues when the tickets are needed.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 24/02/2025 09:32

Always - because I'm an old git who doesn't trust IT systems, despite or perhaps because of working in IT for 40 odd years. 🤣
