Do you still print boarding passes / AirBnB confirmation / train tickets etc?

Random question... currently doing online check-in for some flights and wondering if I really need to print the boarding passes? In theory I can do everything on my phone but... When we last travelled (Christmas) I did print everything and take it with us, but didn't use any of it as everything was available on my phone and it was much easier than faffing around with paper copies.

Do you still print these docs off and carry them with you when you travel?

Print. Gatwick has a black hole for connection. We prebooked fast track security and had to go outside to download the barcode, screenshot it and go back. The amount of people floundering around meant it would have been quicker to just go through security.

BigDahliaFan · 24/02/2025 09:34

If I can I'll print it out for complicated journeys. But I fly a lot in the UK and tend not to bother for that. Haven't been caught out yet....

We were on an Easyjet flight that was delayed by around five hours - snow in Luton.
People's phones ran out of charge, huge confusion over who was sitting where. Aircrew tearing their hair out.
Those of us with printed boarding passes had no issue at all.

You can be denied boarding if you are travelling with an uncharged phone. Aee “Make sure your devices are charged” section here.

I don’t know if has ever happened to anyone in reality, but I’m not going to be the one to find out.

Aside from this, l don’t print boarding passes or tickets anymore. I do print hotel bookings though because l have an unusual name which l always have to spell. It’s easier to hand over the printout with my name on it.

Always print as much as I can 😂 and they go in a wee plastic wallet with a popper button 😂
Off on our first family holiday in 2 weeks and my file is ready to go - plane, hotels, attractions tickets, travel insurance etc. only thing I can’t print is train tickets for a return journey as they’re only available 4 days before

Pushmepullu · 24/02/2025 09:37

Print tickets/boarding passes but also download them to a folder. We travel a lot and have had all sorts of problems with tickets on phones. Have watched long queues form in Greece when the ferry operator wouldn’t accept anything other than a bit of paper. Hotel bookings etc we just save the info onto a document and save it on our phones.

mjdle · 24/02/2025 09:38

I screen shot/ share any travel docs with everyone travelling plus print as back up. Sounds excessive to some but literally takes about 5mins max. I've had a two occasions when I've needed a printed copy once for a boarding pass and once randomly at a festival that would only take printed tickets - was in the small print but everyone had assumed phones would be ok so was chaos.

Beekeepingmum · 24/02/2025 09:41

I've not printed boarding passes for years just keep it all on the phone. I can always be accessed from a website in an emergency.

Then get a power pack for your phone, mine does 3x full charges and cost about £10 - sorted

I travel very frequently. I haven’t printed anything out for maybe ten years?

GrandHighPoohbah · 24/02/2025 10:25

I always print as a back up. It takes seconds and the printer is under the desk where I WFH every day. It's such a simple thing for me to do for peace of mind.

rookiemere · 24/02/2025 10:26

I don't print anymore but I always bring my ipad as well as iphone. That way if there is a glitch with one of them I have the other as back up.

Badbadbunny · 24/02/2025 10:26

No, not for a few years now. I save everything to the phone either in the apple wallet or as a pdf in the files section. I've always carried a little portable battery (though hardly ever use it), so not worried about the phone battery going flat. We tend to email the "paperwork" to each other, so we all have our own train tickets, boarding passes, etc., on our own phones, so we don't have to hand a phone over to the others when being checked. (Also an extra backup if one of our phones dies!). You don't need an internet connection if the tickets/passes are in your apple wallet or saved as a pdf.

Although I've noticed some big events are now using "dynamic" tickets to stop ticket touts/forgeries etc where the ticket carries an ever-changing bar code with limited time use, so you have to have an internet connection shortly before you enter as if you've done it too far in advance, it'll have expired. I know that has caused some big problems at events when the mobile internet signal has been poor (often due to sheer number of people trying to access it at the same time), but that can be ironed out over time with better infrastructure which will come.

Ironically, the only times I've had problems with entries/bookings etc has been with paper tickets/forms. Happened a few times when they've tried to scan a paper boarding pass or entry ticket which has been rejected. Most annoying was once at Manchester airport, where my printed boarding passes were accepted by the check in desk, but not by security to go through to the gate and they made us go back and queue at check in again to get the check in desk to print airport boarding passes - set us back an hour before we got back to the departure gate due to having to queue again at check in and then again at security! I think that's what probably made us start using e-boarding passes on our phones!

Same here, cost less than a tenner on Amazon and not much bigger than a wide pen, so I just pop it in a pocket and forget it's there. Not that I've ever had to use it much, but it's good for peace of mind.

Bjorkdidit · 24/02/2025 10:29

I'm another one who prints as a contingency in case my phone is lost/stolen/smashed screen.

I also find it far easier to carry a folded piece on A4 in my passport to scan rather than having to find the right screen in my phone and from watching other people use their phones as passes or payment methods, that seems to be far more faffy.

So many people end up searching through screens, waiting for things to load up or trying to get the face/fingerprint ID to work.

Same. I do screenshot important travel docs, which means they're also uploaded to cloud storage and accessible from another device in an emergency.

I've never needed to use any of my backup strategies though.

reesewithoutaspoon · 24/02/2025 10:31

Always print boarding pass because phones can be lost or stolen and for the sake of 2 pieces of A4 I don't want to have to deal with the hassle if it happened.

commondore · 24/02/2025 10:32

I don't print. I save boarding passes as photos so no worries about internet access. I also forward tickets to dh or a friend.

Back before things were digital, these were the same people who waited until they were at the front of the queue before they thought to start rummaging in their bag for their paper ticket!

Yes I always print if I can as it's easier mostly just to have the printed version especially if you might have trouble with your phone.

rookiemere · 24/02/2025 10:34

Actually thinking about it the reason I don't print is because our printer is a blinking faff and rarely works first go. Also I aways used to have issues at the security scanners with printed passes and not when they are on my phone.

I haven’t travelled by air for quite a while but I always print train tickets if given the choice between hard copy and e-tickets.

I recently got delayed and I’d been issued with e-tickets without a choice. I claimed compensation for the delay and it’s been refused - I suspect because the e-ticket doesn’t show the ticket price. I’ll now have to spend hours arguing the toss with the train company whereas a screenshot of a paper ticket would have shown all the required details.

I use etickets all the time and have never had a problem claiming a delay using an e-ticket. I use use the right delayrepay website for the train company

I did until very recently. Now I screen shot and share everything with hubby. Always have a charger on me when travelling long distance.

countrygirl99 · 24/02/2025 10:36

Dh does. Then he insists putting them in his special folder in precisely the right order every timely he gets stuff out, even if it will ge needed again in 5 minutes. Really annoying. I keep stuff on my phone in the wallet. Don't worry about battery as have zero good power pack. I wander off and ignore DH while he is constantly faffing with his bloody folder.
