Do you still print boarding passes / AirBnB confirmation / train tickets etc?

Random question... currently doing online check-in for some flights and wondering if I really need to print the boarding passes? In theory I can do everything on my phone but... When we last travelled (Christmas) I did print everything and take it with us, but didn't use any of it as everything was available on my phone and it was much easier than faffing around with paper copies.

Do you still print these docs off and carry them with you when you travel?

No but I will next time- app froze at boarding and I was standing there with my heart hammering out of my chest and the person telling everyone to go by me. Scary how reliant you are on your phone!!!!

stayathomer · 25/02/2025 19:19

The replies to the poster who doesn’t use email- I don’t understand why/ how shopping is lumped in- I work in a supermarket and dread the day all supermarkets become simply warehouses with pickers doing their food shopping for them. There’s so many people losing jobs now because of things going digital- please consider walking into your local shop/ supermarket to buy instead of buying online

Because digital tech isn't going away and the less you engage the more you fall behind.

Yes, and they'll be turning off "texts" in the next few years, so online messaging will only be available via apps such as whatsapp and won't be possible by the old-fashioned texting service on older phones.

I doubt Apple will get rid of iMessage.

I live in hope that texts are switched off, the bothering SMS ones, usually sent by scammers, businesses and the GP receptionist.

Texts from the GP are pretty important though.

@stayathomer I tend to shop in person for clothes and groceries and rarely shop online, but I book hotels, train journeys and cinema tickets online and get email confirmations.

Maddy70 · 25/02/2025 22:02

No but I do share with my fellow travellers so there are copies in case of a broken or lost phone

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/02/2025 22:06

Not only do I print copies of everything, but I also write and print out a day by day holiday itinerary. Yes I am that person.

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/02/2025 22:06

There may also be a plastic folder involved.

We were on an Easyjet flight that was delayed by around five hours - snow in Luton.
People's phones ran out of charge, huge confusion over who was sitting where. Aircrew tearing their hair out.
Those of us with printed boarding passes had no issue at all.

Disagree. We just take enough chargers and then forward the tix to everyone's phones / WhatsApp.

garlictwist · 25/02/2025 22:12

I don't have a printer so no. I always take a battery bank when I travel so never any issues.

FKAT · 25/02/2025 22:13

Always print boarding passes but nothing else. Don't know why. I think not being able to access boarding passes would be the most stressful. Most other reservations you don't need anyway. You usually don't show the reservation at a car hire or hotel. Just your name and ID.

OswaldCobblepot · 25/02/2025 22:16

I print train tickets because I don't want to have to walk through a busy train station with my phone in my hand/pocket. I'd worry about it being snatched out of my hand or me dropping it. Would rather have my phone safely in my bag and a paper ticket in my hand/pocket.

WilfredsPies · 25/02/2025 22:25

@RampantIvy
Ah, that’s where we differ. We’ve got two giant cinemas down the road, a very busy train station and reliable post.

Re spam emails - just set up another email address. This is the reason I have two email addresses Christ no! I don’t want to do the admin for one email account, I’m certainly not going to maintain two of the bloody things, especially if I don’t even need it.

Why doesn't your husband have a banking app then? He does. And WhatsApp etc. He does everything on line.

@Lovethegreydays

Don't all your friends and family have group chats that you're not part of? I'd hate that so much. All this life going on without you being included 😂 I think we are very, very different people. I’m happy to speak to my friends individually by text, I don’t feel excluded at all.

I love being able to contact anyone at anytime including my DC when they're away I hate the thought of anyone thinking I’m available to be contacted at any time.

I love downloading music and podcasts, do you not do any of that either? Such a wealth of interest out there that you wouldn't be able to access otherwise No, I’ve never really liked the thought of listening to music on my phone. I do have one of those 40k song iPods that was loaded up with a few hundred CDs in the days when laptops had space for CDs, so plenty to listen to, and I prefer older bands. If I want new music I’ll buy it on CD. And I’d rather read a book than listen to a podcast.

I run long distances and I love that my family can track my route so that I feel safe and secure. If I got into trouble out on the hills I have GPS tracking and could SOS for help. I love uploading all my runs on to Strava which is another incredible app full of lovely people. I book all my gym sessions on the app, I don't think there's actually any other way of doing it. That’s sensible, but as I’m a firm believer that the only reason to run is if you’re being chased by zombies, it’s not something I’d need to worry about.

I think we’re going to have to agree to differ 😁

RampantIvy · 25/02/2025 22:28

Do you have children @WilfredsPies?

Happy for you to disagree.
When it gets punchy at the plug socket try not to get any blood on my printout.

This, phone snatchers know exactly where people are most likely to be holding their phones, also car parks are a target when people are faffing about trying to get the correct app. I never get mine out now in any street, I have an Apple Watch so this does make it easier, I alway go into a shop if I need to refer to my phone

Sassybooklover · 26/02/2025 07:26

Yes, I like to have a paper copy on me. Simply in case my phone died, internet is unreliable etc.

Love a plastic itinerary folder!

Same here, I got a few A5 plastic popper envelopes from a Poundshop and our passports live in one, waiting to be joined by boarding passes, airport parking, insurance and accommodation details etc.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/02/2025 07:53

I am also that terrible type of person who insists on doing the holiday organising and then gets anxiety about having booked the wrong dates etc.. not helped by the fsct we often do multi location holidays with several different journeys and hotels..

I find a printed itinerary and all the tickets and booking confirmations printed and arranged in date order in a folder is useful for getting my head straight and reassuring me everything is booked and fine.

Taytocrisps · 26/02/2025 08:04

I would, because I had an issue one time when we had a storm the night before I was due to fly. The storm knocked out the power. The battery on my mobile phone died overnight and I wasn't able to charge it. I had to approach the Ryanair desk and ask them to print off the boarding pass. They made noises about charging me for it, but didn't in the end. It was all very stressful. So I always print everything now. Although having said that, I think I read something about Ryanair going paperless, which means they won't accept printed boarding passes.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/02/2025 08:10

Yes, after a particularly stressful evening in Schipol airport where no machine or scanner could read my (apparently clean) phone screen.

Once you have your ticket downloaded you don’t need a signal.

Bjorkdidit · 26/02/2025 08:21

A downloaded ticket is unable to help you if your phone is lost, stolen or screen damaged.

It might seem unlikely but to me it seems crazy to only rely on your phone when you'd be completely stuck if something happened to it.

You have no access to information, can't pay for anything, don't know anyone's numbers, etc etc.
