Surprisingly good things in tins...

Hey everyone,

Just thinking about how happy I was to discover tinned 'greek' gigantes beans.
They're delicious and go with loads of stuff, and don't need heating. From the corner shop too so v convenient.

I'd love to know anyone else's favourite foods in tins that require minimum prep. Preferably stuff that's a bit beyond baked beans, tuna, sweetcorn, soup... Ideally available in the UK!

Thank you and looking forward to some ideas x

Coconut milk. Which I use in curries, both Indian and Thai.

MiddleAgedButterfly · 23/02/2025 09:37

@gollyimholly Princes! They do other flavours too. It's delicious and you don't need much to go with lovely full fat yoghurt.

That’s a good idea, much cheaper than buying fruit corners!

The stuffed vine leaves in a tin from Lidl. Hearts of palm ( hard to find though).

Sainsbury tinned 5 been salad in vinaigrette. Its so nice added to a bigger salad to up the protein

WellsAndThistles haven’t had tinned pears for years but love them! They remind me of my paternal Grandma who was no cook but always gave us lovely things to eat.

mandarins, Asda do these in their basic cheapo range and they are lovely. I put them on porridge, mix them in greek yoghurt for a quick pudding and use them in a lovely all in one mandarin sponge cake that I make which is topped with icing made from mixing the juice with icing sugar

Blackbeans in tins are much better than the pack ones. Personally I love the tins of peas and tiny carrots but no one else in the family does.

I use tinned black beans to make feijoada (Brazilian bean stew). Removes the faff of soaking and cooking the beans.

Hearts of Palm, chuck em in salads, pasta, on pizza or straight out of the can.

Tinned potatoes - to go in curry/ stew. They keep their shape and don't dissolve like fresh potatoes do while cooking.

Tinned spuds were a revelation for me. Great when you want frittata for breakfast without the wait.

What do people do with a tin of chickpeas? I know they're so good for you but I never know what to actually do with them.

Heinz Lentil and Bacon Soup is lovely. Good protein source and filling.

Home made hummus
Chickpea curry
Chickpea, chorizo & spinach stew

staples in our house

RabbitsRock · 23/02/2025 09:44

I have a tin of aubergine in tomato sauce (I think!) from Lidl - looking forward to using it & will come back with an opinion! Loved tinned carrots as a kid but my tastes have changed so I might not enjoy them so much now.

I used to do a lovely Brazilian style curry with hearts of palm. I think it might have been a recipe from Las Iguanas.

Black beans in a spicy soup or mashed in quesadillas.

lifeonmars100 · 23/02/2025 09:45

Boneless sardines, love them on toast or stirred into cooked pasta for a tasty and ultra quick tea.

borntobequiet · 23/02/2025 09:45

I make a Spanish style stew with tinned chickpeas, a small amount of chorizo sausage for flavour, onions, green pepper, garlic, new potatoes and tinned tomatoes. I simmer it for ages (it works well in a slow cooker) and add the drained chickpeas for the last half hour.

ERthree · 23/02/2025 09:46

FFSJulie, I loved the tinned Coleslaw, they also had tinned potato salad and a Florida salad. I just came across tinned beef burgers, couldn't believe they were still being made.

Smoked trout/smoked salmon!

In a tin? Never seen that.

I make something similar but never thought to add potatoes, will do next time I do it. I love my slow cooker, one of the best things I ever bought

I'm an absolute fiend for a tinned peach.

EleanorReally · 23/02/2025 09:51

when my dc were little we always had tinned fruit,
mandarins
fruit salad,
peaches
at the suggestion of my health visitor
along with tinned custard
now i have tins of black beans, kidney beans, cannelloni beans, green lentils, chopped tomatoes, butter beans, black eye beans
less keen on butter beans,
less keen on pinto beans
but the tinned figs sound appealing

EveryOtherNameTaken · 23/02/2025 09:51

Duck confit
Pears
Butter beans
Anchovies
