@MissConductUS your garden looks absolutely gorgeous, I love the stripes. My OH mowed our garden and I persuaded him to cut down some of the ivy coming from next door and lop some of the branches from a tree leaning over the fence.

@Mumtobabyhavoc @sproutsandparsnips We are from the UK and my son married a girl from Portugal and my grandsons were both born there. The family there are all bilingual and I used to go out there and stay with them for weeks at a time. I used to spend the weekends with my son’s mother in law, who is such a wonderful person. I can’t believe I used to go there on my own, now it takes me a lot of courage to even go out with friends for lunch.

Reading back what I said about my grandson being head and shoulders above his teammates sounds as though I was bragging. I didn’t mean in ability, I meant in height 😂 Both the boys are tall for their age, the younger one is 2 years younger than his brother, but almost as tall. My son is 6 foot 2 and the Portuguese men are quite a few inches shorter. I can always spot him in a crowd over there.

@Deathraystare I feel for you with your lunch. How disappointing. On Saturday evening my OH gave my daughter and me one of the small Kinder chocolate bars ad we ate them. I asked him what flavour it was because it was a little chewy. He said it was just milk chocolate but he checked the best before date and it was 2022! He had found it at the back of a cupboard, but I was sure I’d cleaned that cupboard since then.

@sueelleker It was good that your dog was OK on the bus and it must have really enjoyed itself running round. (Wish I had that energy)

Does not look like the vending guy/s have been in while I was out room hunting. Hopefully tomorrow. Old chocolate, yuck!!!

Just went thru all our savings accounts and requested interest certs for our tax returns. Why do the banks make it so bldy difficult

Because they can. Barclays smugly told me they no longer let us print out statement at their branches but people can go on the app. Luckily I have a phone and can use a computer. Loyal customers who have been there for even longer than I have, if they are not good with technology.... Oh yes they say they can post you the details but I am still waiting from November last year. I explained I was homeless and needed this info and my phone would not let me get into the app....

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/05/2025 17:42

Myrtle, is it anything to do with precautions re DVT? Are yoy flying?

mathanxiety · 13/05/2025 18:13

I spent a lot of Mother's Day on the couch with a cat snoozing in my lap - very pleasant.

We had bangers and mash for dinner, with broccoli and cauliflower and cheese sauce. Very trad comfort food. DD cooked.

Deathray I hope you'll find a good flat.

havoc rats swim now????

MissC lovely photos. Spring has definitely arrived here too, and hay fever along with it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 13/05/2025 18:19

Math, apparently! And very quickly, too! 😂

HildaTablet · 13/05/2025 18:37

That’s very frustrating @Deathraystare - I used to live in W4 and afaik there’s a Cambridge Rd South and Cambridge Rd North but not a plain Cambridge Road…

Umanresources · 13/05/2025 18:53

@MyrtleLion two weeks sounds like a long time, but I hope you have a fabulous holiday which should set you up for your hospital stay.

@Deathraystare I’ve been to London a few times, but I have no idea where anything is. When my OH and I were doing our long distance relationship, he would drive and I was the navigator with a large map, which meant we would be lost within 5 minutes. I was so thankful for Sat navs, although we still got lost in an industrial estate, looking for an hotel that we had booked (we resorted to the map again).

MissConductUS · 13/05/2025 19:16

Welcome, @helibirdcomp, and thanks for sharing your dull banking and tax news. Banks in the US are required to post you an interest statement by the end of January if the amount is over $10. If it's under that, you can ignore it for tax purposes.

Havoc, yes, we're on two acres. The lot is a narrow rectangle that extends back into the woods. The stone wall is one of the boundaries. We've just discovered that a tree just on the other side of that wall is dead, so now have to speak to the neighbor about having it cut down.

Uman, the garden will look much better once my flowers start blooming in a few weeks.

And speaking of the garden, our landscaper sent us pictures of different varieties of boxwood plants to replace our dead rhododendrons. I selected the "winter gem" variety as it's the most hardy and we do get very cold winters here. Hopefully he'll be around soon to dig out the dead rhododendrons and plant them. They're not cheap at $129 each and we need four of them. Our old hose (hosepipe) for the front garden didn't survive the winter, so DH has ordered a replacement of better quality and a new hose reel for it. So the front garden is getting a lot of attention (and money) these days.

Math, my seasonal allergies kicked off a few weeks ago when the tree pollen started coming down. Then I had to go on antibiotics to have a tooth extracted. After I finished the ABs, I took a very potent probiotic called VSL3 that my gastroenterologist recommends, and overnight 80% of my allergy symptoms resolved! No fatigue, no headaches, no body aches, etc., just a bit of nasal congestion, but not enough to be bothersome. I thought there really has to be a connection, and looked into it. Sure enough, the gut microbiome regulates allergic responses:

Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis with Probiotics: An Alternative Approach

and

Can Probiotics Help Your Allergies?

There are reportedly several MoAs, but one is that the bacteria produce short chain fatty acids that down regulate the immune response and inflammation. It's worth a try if you're suffering.

DD is now sending loads of photos of her journey around London, most of which I can't share as either she or our SiL are in them. Think Westminster Abbey, St. Paul's, The British Museum, etc.

Knowing I love cats, she did share this one from the British Museum.

We used to drive up from Brighton to visit relatives in Co. Durham, in the pre-M25 days. Going through London on the South Circular was horrendous.

Had appointment today .
2 WW for that .

Photo was taken with a super duper magnifying camera.... which was identical to the one the GP used to refer me. 🤔.

May e they have to do there own super dooper magnifying?

But really boring news ..

I bought a new nightie from Amazon...which I think is the best ever ,,ever ,,ever summer , pre menopausal,,,mid menopausal,, post menopausal,, nightie ever ever 😄😄!!

I don't feel like I have it on me or my skin !

Had a happy haul from them today

Just the trousers are proving a problem.

Packed in the fags last year and my body has definitely changed shape !!

Never advocate Amazon usually ....

But my goodness ...this nightie !!

Mind you ...I haven't washed it yet ..🤔

It might fall apart 😂

mathanxiety · 14/05/2025 22:19

Blimey! That makes a lot of sense, MissC. I'll see if I can lay my hands on the probiotic.

I brought a lot of my plants out today. The deck is looking less bare but the dining room and sitting room feel funny without the overwintering jungle.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/05/2025 02:50

Just waiting on dinner here at 6:45pm. Roasted off the lamb bones from Sunday's dinner and then boiled them for soup. Added potatoes, tomatoes and green beans then seasoned with salt and garlic. Just added ramen noodles. DC are snacking on a fruit platter of banana, kiwi and strawberries. I put out naan, cheese, mandarin oranges and spinach dip around 5pm after a long afternoon of errands driving all over.

@bizzey OK Biz - let me know what nightie it was. I don't normally sleep in anything but as I will probably be sharing a bathroom (and kitchen) I guess I should wear something in the communal areas!!!

@MissConductUS

The cat looks like Bastet. I wonder if it is. If I had a black female cat that is what I would call it.

@mathanxiety

Did your dining and sitting room have lots of 'hitchhikers' from the plants? Always fancied lot of indoor plants (not certain I would have use of a garden) but I worry how many critters would take over and I would not be allowed pets!!!!

MyrtleLion · 15/05/2025 13:47

Kitchen lights are flickering when turned off but not when on. DH asked me to get a new switch panel and I asked him to check the other switch. Same issue but he had a small electric shock. Turned off the power and he opened up the panel. Water escaped.

So we looked up and can see there is a leak from our bathroom above. It wasn’t there a year ago when we had the toilet resited. So we need a plumber to find out why the shower is leaking and an electrician to fix the lights. Fortunately the lights are in a separate circuit to everything else.

We had planned to refurbish the en-suite in March but had no money. Now it seems we have more issues, but hopefully the insurance can help.

bizzey · 15/05/2025 15:33

@Deathraystare ...I have forgotten how to do the links !

But here is a photo and if you type it in it should bring it up.

I am a 10-12 and got a medium.

Though I think I may have jinxed the weather 😂😂.

Wore it last night and woke up wishing I hadn't left the windows open all night !!

It was loose and comfortable...but didn't twist around me and get me looking like a burrito !!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/05/2025 20:17

Myrtle, glad you discoved this issue with the water and electric before something worse happened.
Bizzey, tap the site address line, tap copy, go to where you want to paste the link, tap that spot then tap paste.

Deathray, that cat statue is Bastet:

https://www.worldhistory.org/Bastet/

And speaking of cats, she sent the picture below of Hodge, the Southwark Cathedral cat.

Myrtle, good luck with the repairs. Water is incredibly destructive inside a house.

I'm pulling together the paperwork to get my passport renewed tomorrow. Our local post office will take the picture and process the application.

DD and SiL visited St. Paul's Cathedral today. DH suggested they visit the American chapel there. It was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II in 1958 to honor the American forces who served in WWII.

DH joined the congregation at St. Paul's when he lived in London and is very fond of it. They went today and sent this picture of the chapel and another of the view of London from the top of the Cathedral. It looks like lovely weather in London today.

Our tree bloke stopped by this morning and looked at the neighbor's tree that needs to come down and gave us a price for doing so. DH will have to pop over there this weekend and make sure they don't have any objection to us taking it down.

@bizzy

I normally get a nightie all twisted and with one boob out!!!

@MissConductUS

Thanks for Hodge pic! Looks like he means business. Wonder if one has to tip in dreamies to get in!

Deathraystare · 16/05/2025 15:54

I got a hair cut at last. Nothing too edgy. Just cut and layered slightly. Anything to get rid of my 'Jesus' hair (bob with frizz). Bought some hair spray too (sorry environment!) to sort out the flyaways.

Saw my friend who has complex health problems. I forgot she takes 'cancer' medication but does not have cancer and when she mentioned the treatment I nearly flipped and thought she hadn't told me!

Another friend, the one with Alzheimer's has been on cycle trips with a carer. I am glad she is doing this and she normally turns things down. Refuses to go to book club (she never reads the books but normally enjoys the food!). I will try to pop in and see her when I have a day off but hope it is not high pollen as she then seals all windows and doors!

HildaTablet · 16/05/2025 16:00

Hodge is famous in London - you can buy all sorts of Hodge-related merchandise. He was a rescue cat and a replacement for the previous much-loved Doorkins, a stray who started going into the Cathedral in 2008 and eventually made it her home.

The other very famous London cat is Larry, Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office, who’s often to be seen sitting outside No 10 Downing St waiting to be let in (and enjoys photobombing the PM’s meetings with dignitaries). He also has an entertaining TwiX account.
(Hopefully the full pic will load but it might take a while)
