To think - how awful schools really are

I remember hating school when I went to school. But that was a long time ago now. I'd kind of forgotten about it.

I work for a training company that usually delivers training programmes to businesses. I usually teach adults. I'm not working in the UK at the moment. I'm working in a different country in Europe.

However we recently got asked to design a training programme for a local school. So for the last couple of weeks I've been going in and talking to the children in a school about a topic.

Going into the school- and looking at it as an adult - I just think it's so so awful. Why do we do this to children

The children are not allowed to move , they're not allowed to talk. The teacher yells at them to be quiet all the time.

I understand this is the school system everywhere. I remember that I hated school as a child and I felt trapped. But when I look at it from an adults eyes, it looks even worse.

when I look at it as an adult, it really seems like emotional abuse of children.

It also seems like such a waste of their young years.

They should be playing and having some fun.

They're not allowed to move or talk. And they get shouted at A lot. It just seems like they're getting indoctrinated to not think for themselves and to follow orders. The school system is just awful and needs to change in my opinion

No. And I don’t think you are either.

Im not

I never said that I was.

Ippimi have you reported the emotional abuse? I think this is v important. If you are working in a school where screaming and shouting at children is commonplace then surely you should do so?

Worldwide2 · 17/02/2025 17:03

Note to anyone posting with a different opinion then the op you will be labelled aggressive and of course a teacher. Very odd indeed.

Schools should try their hardest to remain the last bastions of discipline - we have already removed discipline from families (children behave like swines and bear no responsibility), from society (I am discriminated against, not I am a useless lazy person and that is why I am sacked), army, church (I won't go into details), from universities (can I have an extension, please, I am depressed (not to depressed to go out to the pub daily though)).

Our schools are nowhere near 'draconian' - our children, because our schools are too soft, can't compete not only with the Chinese or Indians, but they can't even compete with the East Europeans, I am afraid, when it comes to university entry or sciences competitions. all because there is too much 'play' - in my dc school so much time was dedicated to sports, that teachers from our twinned school from India, although cricket-mad, commented that we are disadvantaging our children academically by concentrating on drama, music, and sports. It was a wake-up call when they said that, and not a nice one because we knew they were right.

Worldwide2 · 17/02/2025 17:04

@cansu yes that's what I was thinking. If you witness children being abused surely you would speak out 🤔

She didn't post a different opinion.

She wrote that I was posting "meaningless bile".

So you don't think that saying to someone

"You're posting meaningless bile".

Is aggressive then? Would you say it's nice?

OP posts:
TiredCatLady · 17/02/2025 17:04

Oh no, I forgot. You’re some kind of “trainer”.

If you think these posts are “so aggressive” then I think you might be a touch over sensitive. Just my opinion of course.

Ippimi · 17/02/2025 16:58

Meaningless bile. Wow so aggressive! Are you a teacher?

There's only one rude aggressive person on this thread. Hilariously so actually. If this is an example of your teaching/training style I pity the children.

Of course. She said I'm posting meaningless bile. That's such a nice thing to write. I'm just being too sensitive of course

Edited

So you think the poster who said I was posting meaningless bile, was what , being kind?

You're so biased in attacking me. You ignore anything nasty that anyone else writes.

It's not aggressive at all no.

Spot the teacher!

So defensive and aggressive

Well, your "spot the teacher" game is all very jolly, but as it happens, I'm not a teacher and I don't work in a school. I have nothing to be defensive about, I just think you're talking nonsense.

But you carry on making assumptions and wild generalisations. I mean, why stop now when you're already on a roll?

Ippimi · 17/02/2025 17:09

Worldwide2 · 17/02/2025 17:08

It's not aggressive at all no.

Really. I don't think I've ever gone up to anyone in real life and said to them "you're talking meaningless bile"

It doesn't matter wether you have or haven't. It's still not aggressive. I would put it in the same category as someone telling another they are talking utter rubbish.
Someone who gives 'talks' to children should know that.
Now that you are calling every other poster 'aggressive' I'm starting to wonder if the teachers are shouting at the children or just asking them to stop chatting?
Maybe go have a lie down.

cansu · 17/02/2025 17:13

Any answer on your safeguarding of these children OP?? You haven't said yet if you have reported this abuse? Very odd as surely you have a responsibility to do so.

Ippimi · 17/02/2025 17:13

If this thread gives a snapshot of how things are, the children look like they are trapped in a crap system for years to come.

Many adults on this thread have basically said that they don't care. And they have just said things like "children need to listen and be quiet' .

They are not thinking of how the children feel at all.

On the other hand, I see some other posters did say that schools are bad, and things need to be improved.

I'm actually starting to think this is all in the ops imagination as she seems to have a skewed view on aggression.

It is aggressive.

Have a lie down!

What a weird thing to say .

And the teachers are shouting as I've said. One of my other colleagues also goes out to work at this school, and he also commented on how much the teachers shout at the children.

No, but I didn’t say I have said it. I’m just saying I don’t really think it’s that aggressive. I could think of much worse!

JimmyGrimble · 17/02/2025 17:16

The op has no suggestions or answers. She has an expert opinion based on the fact that she a) went to school and b) has been into some schools.
You couldn’t make it up really.

Like I couldn't possibly, ( gasp,) have a job!

I must have made that up!

I am pretty sure the OP said "shouted" not "told"
