When Zelensky was pulled up long ago for not saying thank you enough, I remembered it's not the Ukrainian way.
I re-visited some video of soldiers delivering bread to villagers and they didn't say the word thank you either. They hugged, they kissed their hands in thanks, but never spoke the word.
Zelensky often says that he's very grateful, surely that's enough.

"Trump currently not interested in renewing Ukrainian minerals deal, says senior White House official"
He wouldn't have let a good deal go due to a fall out. Looks like Putin's having a rethink. Don't believe it existed yesterday either.

All quite cringeworthy. Trump calls off the meeting, Zelensky and Macron insist it goes ahead. Zelensky arrives like an an unwelcome mourner at a funeral. The burial being the minerals deal. What a mess.

Great PR move from the King, showing compassion. For what it’s worth I joined threads yesterday and the outpouring of support for Ukraine from across the globe is really heartwarming, as is my fb feed.

In the situation he found himself, I’m not sure he could have handled it better without acquiescing to absolute misinformation, but I never thought him going was a good idea given the polarisation of views and messages from the US.

Mark Rutte is live on BBC News just now, still saying he believes that the US supports Ukraine. Claiming that Trump is fighting for a durable peace. He’s describes yesterday as unfortunate and suggests that Zelenskyy needs to find a way to mend his relationship with the US.

Interestingly listening to Ukrainecast Vitali says that lots of people in Ukraine think Zelenskyy should have swallowed his pride and given Trump the β€œrespect” he clearly thinks he deserves.

There has always been bad blood between Klitschko and Zelensky. The former wishing to be President I understand. He won't ever praise him.

Fantastic news about Sandringham. Hope the Waleses drop by with the children.

Where do you go from here?

I think the risk is withdrawal of US military support at a time where Europe is not yet able to step up and fill the gaps. The summit of European leaders now takes on a while new signifcance.

It really pains me to say it but maybe Zelensky has to hold his nose and offer the apology. It will be painful to make and watch but the hard political reality is that Ukraine needs the US for survival. Trump is vain but maybe subject to flattery and maybe this is what Zelensky has to offer.

Igotjelly · 01/03/2025 17:35

I actually teared up at Starmer striding down Downing Street and embracing Zelenskyy.

You and me both

StatuteofLiberty · 01/03/2025 17:39

Apparently there were cheers outside downing Street which keir is referencing.

Natsku · 01/03/2025 17:41

WinterMorn · 01/03/2025 13:17

In fact, I will go one further. Any Surrey based posters who would like to meet in β€˜real’ life for a coffee, chat or just the chance to blow off some steam, let me know and I am up for it πŸ™‚

I plan on coming over to the UK next summer. I hope by that point I can celebrate Ukraine's peace and freedom, and would love to celebrate it with some from these threads.

Yes quite loud cheers which is wonderful. He looks so much more at ease with Starmer than yesterday. I notice too he said thank you as soon as he sat down.

MagicFox · 01/03/2025 17:43

@Natsku @WinterMorn I'm up for this too. If we keep it private and between long term posters we trust I think it would be wonderful

@Igotjelly yes the poor man carefully said he is thankful and x y and z.

Igotjelly · 01/03/2025 17:44

Zelenskyy is the literal opposite of toxic masculinity.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 01/03/2025 18:00

He is a proper man, in the old sense. Not a hollow sham prancing and posturing and as soggy as used toilet tissue.

I believe South Korea were offering support before the Trump/ Vance ambush. Perhaps Iran could be persuaded to sell to Europe. Do arms sellers have scruples, or is it all about the money?

Yeah I won't be in Surrey either (Suffolk) but I'm hoping to get a 4 week block of holiday which would allow some time for travelling about

If democracies are going to survive though we will need to do something about all the misinformation spreading through society.

I don't mean differing views (obviously) but people propagating totally made up facts.

For a start all our official people / representatives need to get off X. Their algorithms are totally skewed so that misinformation can't be effectively counteracted.

We also need a tech stack which is independent of the big american tech firms. Unfortunately any promising UK firms immediately get bought up.

Perhaps something developed and owed by an independent organisation (with charitable status?? though it would have to charge) with the aim of producing and maintaining ethical tech. There is open source but I do worry about security, if contributors were taken over by the wrong people.

</delurks>

I’ve been saying for decades - since before β€œWWW 2.0” if anyone else remembers that - that ultimately we need public sector lead on computing, the same as we had public sector telephones, telegrams and mail, originally, and still have public sector broadcasting. For the same reasons. We had more chance of it back then when old information providers were still around and training in standards. Instead we’ve destroyed the old information infrastructure because β€˜anyone can do it’, despite the actual evidence in practice that not everyone can. It’s damned hard to pick out truth, while our own politicians, as a random instance, go around screaming about law lords and judges being the enemies of the people, or repeatedly lie that we all have equal economic opportunities and things have never been better.

I'm not normally a worrier, but why would Zelensky request a meeting with King Charles?

What’s worrying you? I would suspect he wants to ask the King to use some of his soft power on Trump. That and he’s low key trolling Trump.

Assuming this wasn’t a language/ translation blip, I would say it’s gold standard PR on his part and I fully support it.

@Natsku @MagicFox @Natsku and any other regulars, (especially you Ducks) if we can get this off ground it would be lovely.
