Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

Yes, those slats would look best! If you don’t like the partial thing, a whole wall would be fine.

Your brain works just fine, you did a great job in your kids’ rooms 😁 Don’t overthink. If you find a picture you love (or a rug or curtains), people can tell you what colour paint would work with it. Your sofa is black, your cupboard white, anything goes, especially the bold and bright colours you like. Far easier to match the paint to a fabric or painting than the other way round.

The kids room feels very different. I think because its a bedroom not sure.

I do like some ideas people suggest. But sometimes it feels hard to step away from the cosy /warm feel that people like so much . But I also know my thinking is not the norm ( I don't mean that badly ) and then on top of that I don't know what I'm thinking myself

I think you’re right, you don’t know what you want 😂

Shall we start over?

You like bright
You like bold
You like quirky and different

You aren’t sure if you want cosy (you can have cosy with bright…)

You don’t like low light
You don’t like dark colours
You don’t like your sofa
You don’t like following the crowd

Maybe people could help you find something you love to start the process.

Based on that summation I'm chucking Jonathan Adler back in the ring as inspiration. Very light and bright but filled with colour plus black and white.

Yes this. But although I don't like the sofa i can't get rid of it . But can split it . But yeah everything you said. It seems difficult though.

I think this weekend I'm probably going to only managed to finish the white paint. I have painted the 2 walls at one end where the wallpaper was and next to it . I need paint near the windows and the other end of the room . Normally I could do it in a day. But I think because I have had to faff with the sofa and i had to get the unit down and out of the room and work round the kids and life. Everything takes longer . The bedrooms were so much easier. Anyway I have sorted everything now ready for painting other end of the room. Then at least I have my blank canvas.

Did any of the images spark joy when you did? Obviously I'm not suggesting you have his budget to work (who does!) with but seeing what you did with the kids rooms you clearly love colour.

@PinkArt it all looks to posh and perfect. Its hard to picure in a standard home. I'm probably going to end up being awake all night thinking and Google images.

Night before last i went to sleep 5.30am because I was thinking about the sofa ends . Last night it was 3. 40 am because I was thinking about paint ffs

I mean I'm happy that it's just that keeping me awake instead of more pressing things. Which means life it's good . But fml who stays awake all night thinking about shit like that . Clearly me 😅

I'm looking at these. If i was to do the one with the red sofa then I would have the darker colour behinde where I would normally sit . And have large bright pictures like in the pic. I would do the orange . But im not whsy colour the other walls would be

The 2nd pic with the green sofa . I do like the colours but im my head I'm placing it in s bedroom ?

Did you get to b and q, do they have a paint mixing area? Grab a load of colour cards you like the look of (if they still do them) then you can see what goes with what when you get home. I love the walls in that pic with the green sofa. Doesn't say bedroom to me particularly. The other pic with the orange wall, maybe a lighter version of that blue-green. More of a turquoise?

No I didn't get to b&q. I don't think i will get there this weekend. I haven't even finished the white painting yet. I think im just going to do the white this weekend. Hopefully get paint in the week. See how things go with the actual painting

I think you have found your style but are doubting it because your DC said no to your hallway plans and everyone on here is suggesting cosy, more muted ideas. It’s your home. Go for it. So what if it isn’t to everyone else’s taste.

I prefer the teal sofa design but I would flip it so it goes the other way ie on the 2 walls where the sofa was originally with the pattern on the wall where the wallpaper was. I would pick a rug in one of the colours as best as you can get a match then colour match the paint to that so they exactly match.

I don't really care what the kids say 😅 it would probably become a joke /banter which is kind of nice because it makes them laugh.

I like the ones that I screen shot . Hpong ti looks for some more though incase I find anything I like better.

Feels to me like a big step forward, discovering your own style. You did such a cracking job with the kids' rooms, so you know you can do this.

hockityponktas · 22/02/2025 10:13

If you like colour go with colour!
Black and white is the perfect back drop for splashes of colour!
you could leave the walls white and paint a bright colour behind the tv and add a strip of the same or contrasting colour to the opposite wall or paint around the window so it’s only splashes instead of full wall.
On the empty wall you could get some large prints in frames in matching/contrasting colours or add lots of coloured small photo frames.
my house is all very neutral-I’m a bit afraid of colour I think!
I love sage but I have a feeling it’s not you, instead of trying to disguise the black sofa and bright white- go with it.
One step at a time though

Minimooch posted a set of photos on Sunday at 16:05. The third picture would look good as it's a similar sofa to yours.

Hopefully i can. I'm just much less confident because its the living room.

My motivation has dropped a bit as well . But I think that's because of the preping painting white first is so boring. Having to move heavy awkward things is an arse and takes a long time.

Also I could have been actually doing this at the start of half term instead of the end. So its going to take longer.

I have almost finished with the white. I did this part day before yesterday and its a bit patchy. Am I going to need to give a 2nd coat ? Or can I just paint over it as it is ? Could it end up patchy

Middlepiepush · 22/02/2025 12:34

Definitely no need for 2nd coat of the white if you are painting another colour on top of it.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 22/02/2025 12:46

If you are going to paint over it, no need for another coat of white.

Youagain2025 · 22/02/2025 13:14

I'm practically done now apart from a square behind the tv. I Need ds to take it of the wall for me .

I could actually go and get paint today . I'm in 2 minds of feeling lazy and can't be arsed. And the other way of let's get this done

OP posts:
Youagain2025 · 22/02/2025 13:48

I still have paint from theses colours. Roughly half of a 2.5 tin. For each colour. Do I use any of theses colours or should I just go and get something different. It's putting me of using the same colours that are in DS room . Plus am I undoing what I said I was going to do colour wise .

I need to go b&q anyway for frog tape
