Lighthearted - What’s the most (stereotypically) middle class thing you’ve done/said recently?

I’ve just re-waxed my Barbour jacket…

What about you?

Whenever I shop at Aldi or Lidl, I always take my M&S and Waitrose bags.

My sister overheard a mum saying to a toddler in Cambridge "I think you'll find that I've been more than accommodating, Barnaby" and though it was years ago, it still makes me laugh every time I think about it.

Brilliant! And the name 'Barnaby' fits in perfectly. I want that as a catch phrase!

maggiesleapp · 13/02/2025 14:48

Oh my! I am too but would not consider myself middle class!

You don't have to be middle class; it's funnier when you're not but suddenly realize you've done something that seems stereotypically mc!

LillyPJ · 14/02/2025 06:09

Stealer · 13/02/2025 17:46

Hahaha look at us being all MC. Not like those WC plebs. <tinkly laugh>

What a wanky thread..

It's funny when it's people inadvertently doing something mc. I am definitely WC but I did eat quinoa once... The thread gets wanky when it's people boasting about how mc/rich they are.

Actually my daughter when she was 7 asking me loudly how to turn her chair (we were unusually on a TUI flight) into her bed 🤦🏻‍♀️

This had made me realise my bags for life are Aldi, M&S, Lidl, Home Bargains and Centre Parcs Grin

beachcitygirl · 14/02/2025 06:21

Oh ! Stating loudly to a chum that I couldn't believe that Waitrose didn't have any samphire. Dying inside at myself

RIPVPROG · 14/02/2025 06:29

DS is much worse than I am, last weekend "mummy may I listen to the Archers on the way to grandma's house, are we going to the stables first?"

LillyPJ · 14/02/2025 06:33

I'm in the Midlands where 'Ay up' is a common greeting. One of DS's posher 7-year-old friends came to play after school. In the car on the way home, the friend suddenly piped up, 'I wonder what the derivation of the phrase "Ay up" is?'

Toddlerteaplease · 14/02/2025 06:40

I took my dad to Waitrose and said he would have to slum it. They live near a Booths.

FamilyPhoto · 14/02/2025 06:56

I ordered more logs for the wood burner, walked my black labrador then went shopping including chorizo, alioli and olives.
Im not MC - I live in Spain .

I absolutely hate the idea of having special inferior coffee for tradesmen. Seems really rude.
And it’s 2025 ffs. We can all go on holiday to Italy or go to independent coffee shops or buy an espresso machine. Nice coffee isn’t some special elite thing you have to be a C1 or above to appreciate.

Not using the best Wedgwood or your favourite mug you would hate to get broken for someone who’s working outside or with mucky fingers or lying on the bathroom floor surrounded by tools on the other hand is surely common sense!

I've seen one too many of my exquisitely crafted single origin flat whites tragically go cold and dusty on the worktop to bother with the Sage for tradies anymore. Sorry not sorry.

On a serious note, I hope your daughter is okay!

Sudocrem sorted it 🙈

Ugh the idea that you’d treat trades people with ‘inferior’ anything doesn’t say middle class to me, it just says that you’re a knob.

Bloody hell. I have never felt poorer or lower class after reading all these!

Welcome to another thread where rich people pretend to be middle class lol, swear people don't know what "middle" means. I admit to loving these threads though my guilty pleasure.

Although I did once get told Im Not middle class because I had my first child at 16 apparently that makes you forever lower class. Doomed haha

This. It makes sense to give them a mug that you wouldn't mind if it fell and broke/got paint on it etc, but I'm Confused at the idea of having special cheapo coffee in the cupboard just for the occasional tradesman!

I have a further contribution to the thread this morning though - looking through my post for this week and it consists of a copy of the old girls' annual newsletter from my former public school, some marketing stuff from the Wine Society and a rather incongruous junk mail leaflet from Farmfoods.

I agree. It’s absolutely horrible.

most of the supposedly mc people on here would be horrified to learn that many “tradesmen” earn more than they do and probably drink nicer coffee than them at home

Seriously this is so cringe! Why wouldn't you give them your regular coffee cups and coffee ? Wtf !

Why would you bother cracking out the fine china and bougie coffee beans just for one man who's in your house for ten minutes clearing the shit blockage out the toilet? Not that he's not appreciated, but he probably gets offered coffee at every house instant coffee is instant so can be done quickly for him. (Or her female plumbers exist)

Well of course you wouldn't. I said it makes sense not to give them one of the Highland Stoneware mugs, or granny's best fine china or whatever. But let's face it, we all have plenty of normal mugs so this is a total non-issue!

The comment was prompted by a comment upthread from someone who also has a special pot of cheapo instant that is used exclusively for tradesman, the implication being that her "proper" MC coffee would be wasted on him. And the PP I was replying to pointed out that there is nothing middle class about doing that!
