Lighthearted - What’s the most (stereotypically) middle class thing you’ve done/said recently?

I’ve just re-waxed my Barbour jacket…

What about you?

Just ignore it like most of us do with most threads. Or are you feeling a bit insecure.....

Far from it. I don't feel the need to validate my perceived class by saying I shop at Waitrose or polish the family le creuset.

murasaki · 14/02/2025 22:58

Dp who is firmly working class, says sod off. Step away from the thread if it makes you unhappy.

Do you always ask your DP what you are allowed to post on MN?

Stealer · 14/02/2025 23:05

I hope your WC DP is not a trades person who gets the shit coffee.

It's still a wanky thread. And it's not funny.

I think it depends on how you look at it. I'm finding it sit-com funny.
It's funny in the way that Hyacinth Bucket or Valerie Jones in "Rivals" is funny.

The most entrenched middle class characteristic is confidence. They think if they've said/done something that it's fine and normal.

The aspirational and nouveau riche are desperate to identify with the class they'd like to be (and are terrified they'll be spotted as being the class they think they've left) and, hence, are desperately conscious of everything they say and do.
So, it's important what bags you take your shopping home in; you'd actually go out and buy glasses before people came round so you had a matching set (lower middles adore "matching sets"); you're very conscious you have Wedgwood mugs...

The most middle/upper middle thing was expressed by a friend of mine on two occasions:
"It doesn't matter - nobody here knows me"
and
"It doesn't matter - everyone knows me and won't mind".
And she serves lovely coffee/tea in randomly selected mugs to everybody.

murasaki · 14/02/2025 23:06

Heh no,I tell him after I've done it and he comments if he feels if it's relevant, and he really couldn't see why you were getting so antsy about other people having different lives from you.

Come on these threads are just a bit of fun why so sensitive? That other posters husband is right don't open the thread if you don't like the topic. I say that as someone who got told I could never even be considered middle I'd always be lower class just because I became a mum at 16 on another one of these threads. Honestly just had to laugh at that

Why ask him? Is it because he's a man his opinion is more valid than mine?

I didn't ask him, I told him, as you'd see if you actually read my post.

Why tell him? I give no fucks about your DPs manly opinions.

murasaki · 14/02/2025 23:13

But to be fair his opinion is more valid than yours as he understood the premise of the thread and found it funny, while teasing me, and you seem to have an entire McDonald's franchise worth of chips on your shoulder.

Reminds me of the time I was in Waitrose and heard a man shout “Spatial awareness!” to his very young child who was pushing their trolley 😆

I was volunteering at my local museum, helping with a family activity - that's probably enough in itself tbh.

Anyway, they were designing mosaics with coloured pre cut paper squares. One mother was getting quite obviously agitated with her 6 year old offspring. I heard her exhort, though slighted clenched teeth...

'What we're looking for here, Xander, is SYMMETRY...'

He's right the thread is funny no idea why anyone would get their panties in such a twist.
Most of the comments are just people making fun of themselves not even anyone else. Even the coffee comment who gives a shit? I'm yet to have a plumber mention how shit my coffee is. So clearly not the end of the world 😂

Exactly, its just a silly thing to laugh about, we had very different upbringings and sometimes we laugh at the other's experiences. It is what it is.

And let me tell you that WAS actually just rude apparently my whole life and level of classiness was defined by being a young mum. That poster even thought only the lowest class would not have an abortion at that age, like what?
Anyway that was funny and I haven't seen a single comment on this thread like that

Nothinglikeagoodbook · 14/02/2025 23:26

Loud question from 4-year-old in Waitrose: "Mummy, have they got some chilli squid? It’s my favourite!"

That was rude. And wrong.

TorroFerney · 13/02/2025 16:17

Opposite for me, working class but apart from skiing i kind of do all the things listed here.

I genuinely have no idea what class I am?! 🤷‍♀️
A mix of influences. Is it possible to be classless in Britain?

scalt · 15/02/2025 07:00

As a teenager, I didn't understand about class at all. I couldn't understand the humour in the Fawlty Towers episode "A Touch of Class", where Basil is fawning over Lord Melbury, and making the "riff-raff" move tables to accommodate him.

NormaNormalPants · 13/02/2025 14:07

Drove to more Waitrose than I care to admit on the hunt for reblochon so I could make tartiflette 😁

Stop making up words!

Don't read it then. I think it's funny, even when it's people boasting about how rich they are - not realizing how ridiculous they sound.

Skymadeofdiamonds · 15/02/2025 07:48

Having a lovely messy warm and bright house that looks like a museum.

If you are pretentious and think you are mc (as you can't change class), but actually are as common as muck, then having an immaculate, minimalist house. Because you value yourself by how good you are at cleaning and follow social media.

Exceptions are possible but they are exceptions.

The word was 'tell' not 'ask'.

I offer my piano tuner a choice of instant coffee, percolated coffee, teas (normal, herbal or fruit), but she always chooses a bottle of water.
