Is everyone's kitchen as hectic as mine? (Photo)

A little bit outing but I wanted to know if people can relate to this hectic kitchen of mine! It gets cleaned and tidied every day but most things I can't seem to store anywhere as have very little storage in my house, but honestly, does this kitchen seem 'normal' or very unorganized, messy, chaotic etc? Because I'm not sure if I'm being overly critical to myself for having a kitchen like this or I do in fact need to seriously organise it better! (The white blob is my son!) For context I have a husband and 3 children aged 13, 7 and 15 months and work part time.

Why don't you tidy as you go along? It's much easier that way.

And tell your child not to make a mess.

There has been 22 pages of people asking OP why she doesn’t tidy as she goes along.

Honestly, that makes me twitch just looking at it! I couldn't live with that level of mess!

I could not cope with this level of mess , tbh . Sorry , don’t mean to be harsh. The things I would change are : absolutely nothing that does not belong in the kitchen needs to be put away ,IG the bike helmet etc. the washing needs to go somewhere else , if nothing else because you freshly laundered clothes will smell of cooking . as for everything else : things get put away right after using , like the cereal & the butter. Trash is put in the trash right away , like the empty packet and the empty coke bottle , plates rinsed and put in the dishwasher right away . The table needs to be clean and clear at all times so can be used for actually eating on , sitting down together is the perfect time to catch up as a family .

I couldn't live like that

Drying laundry in the kitchen? Wont it smell of cooking?

The kitchen is the only space in my house for an airer too. We have to walk around it.

Can you teach your oldest 13yo and 7 yo to clean after himself: dish in the dishwasher or sink. ( and husband obviously)
Put bike in garage or somewhere else.
Clean as you go along: put recyclables in recycling bin, dishes washed as you go along or straight into dishwasher.

Good luck 🍀

easylemonsqueezy · 16/02/2025 18:27

If you can get it out you can put it away
That'd take 20 mins tops to sort
No excuse

Pedallleur · 16/02/2025 19:24

Too much mess. Everyone needs to be responsible for tidying up. If you use it put it back in the cupboard/fridge or in the dishwasher/sink if dirty or bin if used. Work surface needs to be cleaned regularly. Bike and accessories put away. The bike is in the way and you don't know what the tyres have ridden through. The washing will smell of cooking. However compared to my in laws kitchen yours is surgically clean and v.tidy.

I am a massive cook and cook all sorts of world meals and have a lot of different utensils and pots, instant pot, tagine, cast it in pans and wok etc. And the kitchen we have - rented house, Is not for a cook and there is 0 storage. So I have overspill on my counters. It is so frustrating.

SeenYourArse · 16/02/2025 20:39

Nope sorry it’s well above the ‘usual mess’ benchmark, your table is completely unusable and that’s days worth of rubbish on the worktop. I see 10 or so kitchens in people’s homes per week so feel justified in my grading!

Oooh what do you do? I'd be scared to have mine graded I think, well sometimes

You need to use effectively the storage you do have. If your cupboards are full then go through them one by one and get rid of what isnt being used. So many gadgets in the kitchen seem like a good idea but are not used. So get rid. Only have multi-use equipment or regularly used equipment. The bike and kids toys need to be stored elsewhere. You need a good recycling and bin system to avoid the empties on the side. Think about the systems you have for cleaning plates / dealing with rubbish / recycling and laundry and ensure they are all working well. If not change the systems to things that do work. Only keep what you can store - if not enough storage downsize what you have until you are living within your storage capabilities.
