Is everyone's kitchen as hectic as mine? (Photo)

A little bit outing but I wanted to know if people can relate to this hectic kitchen of mine! It gets cleaned and tidied every day but most things I can't seem to store anywhere as have very little storage in my house, but honestly, does this kitchen seem 'normal' or very unorganized, messy, chaotic etc? Because I'm not sure if I'm being overly critical to myself for having a kitchen like this or I do in fact need to seriously organise it better! (The white blob is my son!) For context I have a husband and 3 children aged 13, 7 and 15 months and work part time.

I have 3 adult bikes in my kitchen at the moment. I prefer the kids to
ho to school on a dry bike (that hasn’t been stolen overnight!).

Do you not have a back garden/yard?

WingSlutz · 13/02/2025 22:09

OP wrt to moving the clothes airer, I have a similar one and the cord is short. Could you get an extension lead? Plug in a 2 meter extension cord and then plug the airer into that, you'd be able to move it a bit out of the way?
Also re Cheerios, either get a plastic container thingy, or change the height of the shelves in your cupboard so you can fit cereal boxes.
I know what you mean about the bike, is there somewhere you could put a hook on the wall to hang it when it's not in use?

NY152 · 13/02/2025 22:18

I couldn’t cope with that at all but I wouldn’t really bat an eye lid if I went into someone’s house and it looked like this.

Re take the photo once you’ve tidied up as I’m sure the kitchen worktops won’t look anywhere near as bad.

Definitely put the bike outside, could you buy a small storage unit for it? If there’s just the bike inside it will be much easier than routing through the shed.

It is a mess but I think it would be easy enough to clear/ find storage solutions. It’s not that bad.

SunburstsOrMarbleHalls · 13/02/2025 22:31

Im fairly relaxed but that is a bit too messy for me. I think it would make me feel a bit overwhelmed with all that clutter.

I never dry clothes in the kitchen if any cooking is taking place as fabric can absorb smells so it wont have that freshness. I'd end up falling over the bike so that would be a big no too.

crumblingschools · 13/02/2025 22:39

Can you get a bike shed which can go against side of house/fence so not so far away as the shed?

Thank u for all the honest answers, I knew it deep down but I think I wanted to be shamed into sorting it out. It can look very very tidy and lovely and it's a decent sized kitchen there's more of it around the corner but since having my baby I honestly can't be bothered but I hate living like this!

Get DH to take them all out for a morning this weekend, get your favourite music on full blast and blitz it - you'll feel sooooooo much better

I love your kitchen.
It looks busy, homely and full of love and life.
Mine looked exactly the same when the DCs were younger.

Behind every immaculate house is a very dull woman.

🤣🤣, not true! Is this like the threads saying women who look put together have unhappy kids as they can't possibly do both?

It's not mutually exclusive you know.

OP wanted help as she knows it's not great and she's doing something about it. Won't suddenly make her dull in anyway.

Wishingplenty · 13/02/2025 22:59

I actually think most people do have kitchens like this at certain points in their day and that a lot of people are just too smug to say otherwise.

Tryonemoretime · 13/02/2025 23:16

Again - once the kids have been bathed, jam an ordinary airer in the bath, open the window a crack and in the morning the clothes will be nearly dry. The airer doesn't need to be in the kitchen!

FrangipaniBlue · 13/02/2025 23:31

Good god no.

For starters why a bike in the kitchen? Have a no toys in the kitchen rule, it’s a safety hazard and finally tidy up as you go along!

The op has said why it’s in the kitchen.

BobnLen · 14/02/2025 06:36

We are a retired couple and our kitchen sometimes looks like this minus the bike and washing though DH has announced he will be fixing his bike gears in the kitchen as it's too cold in the garage.

Nannyfannybanny · 14/02/2025 08:44

No not smug, but tiny open plan kitchen at the end of my living room. I have 2 strips of worktop, one by the sink,2 feet long, one between the hob and microwave 18 inches,so I have to put everything away as I use it.

MissDeborah · 14/02/2025 08:54

PrivacyScreen · 13/02/2025 23:41

I agree

Nope
I just tidy things away as I go along
No clothes drying in the kitchen-they will stink of food smells
Bikes, dolls pushchair and toys-no unsafe and a trip hazard
Dishes straight in dishwasher
Ditto rubbish in bin
Butter etc straight back in fridge
All the silly comments about being dull 🙄

How does it make one interesting if you live in a tip?
It doesn't, it makes it stressful and that's why Op has posted.

Lorrymum · 14/02/2025 08:55

It's your kitchen, your home, it's how you live with your family.
I don't understand why you would feel the need to seek vindication from complete strangers.

lovelydayIhave · 14/02/2025 08:56

Oh good grief, no- our kitchen doesn't look like this and never did- it would drive me mad.

It's cluttered, overflowing either way stuff, doesn't look homely- just chaotic and pretty messy.

Cause op hopes that she'll find fellow people who will reassure her it's pretty normal and she doesn't need to do anything about that and it's actually quite homely.🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

That's disgusting, and dangerous. What if someone came over unexpectedly?

Blimey, over reaction or what!! Unclench as mnet would will you to ...

Well she's found one here. I can see no problem with it at all - each to his own say I.

I'd quite happily sit in there and enjoy a cuppa with you OP, there a lot of very highly strung people on here!

Nanny0gg · 14/02/2025 10:05

PrivacyScreen · 13/02/2025 23:41

I agree

No. Because I put away as I use things

Pour cereal - put packet away
Use butter - put away
Put rubbish straight in bin, by sink for washing if necessery otherwise straight in recycling
Pile washing up neatly etc

No bikes. No washing (heated airer in bedroom/on landing if room)

Yes, it's messy, but clean. Mine looks like that on a busy day minus the bike! Then I tidy it. Then it gets messy again. And so on. This is normal for lots of us. For people who bleach everything in sight multiple times a day, not so much.
