Is everyone's kitchen as hectic as mine? (Photo)

A little bit outing but I wanted to know if people can relate to this hectic kitchen of mine! It gets cleaned and tidied every day but most things I can't seem to store anywhere as have very little storage in my house, but honestly, does this kitchen seem 'normal' or very unorganized, messy, chaotic etc? Because I'm not sure if I'm being overly critical to myself for having a kitchen like this or I do in fact need to seriously organise it better! (The white blob is my son!) For context I have a husband and 3 children aged 13, 7 and 15 months and work part time.

I'm afraid it looks like a health hazard, and my own standards are not what MN would call high.

I don't allow rubbish to build up on the worktops though, it has to go straight to the recycling bin even if that means going outside for it. I am also a stickler for the hob being left clear and wiped clean. It's a fire hazard otherwise.

Clearing up as you go along whilst cooking a meal goes a long way towards a better kitchen. Otherwise, it just looks like a bomb has exploded. Shrapnel everywhere.

Sorry, but even I could not cope with your kitchen as it is.

Oh, and get that bike out of there! I have to be VERY firm with my DH and two of my DDs about where bikes can be left (I e. in the garage area, NOT blocking up the hallway or in the kitchen).

No, because my kitchen is never untidy.

I already have chronic illness, that's why I too have systems in place.
The thing is once everything is neat , tidy and uncluttered it's easy to keep it like that.
I also couldn't risk those trip hazards.
There's no drama at all, no idea why people are over reacting to the fact that it's nicer and easier to be tidy!
Probably live in a pigsty that's why 😂

It's great that you have a system in place that works well for you . But people have different situations. What works for you may not for someone else. You could have 2 people with the same chronic illness and they will cope or not cope in different ways .

So?
Op asked the question and has got honest answers .
Living like that is hazardous, mess easily cleared up but trip hazards in the kitchen.
Best op sorts it one way or another before she or one of her DC gets injured

Edamcheese · 14/02/2025 19:14

Well you do have your hands full with 3 kids and working part time. I do feel it’s tough to be dealing with all this. Yes it’s rather untidy.Don’t beat yourself up about it. Once the kids are a bit older they can help out more with tidying their stuff.
But if you are bothered it about watch the Stacy Solomon series. It may help to motivate you and help you how to organise your kitchen and other rooms, but you need time and some help as it can take some doing. But otherwise don’t worry life is too short.

SpiraliserSardinePasta · 14/02/2025 19:16

Meh, I've seen worse - and no judgment from me, 3 DC including a baby, DCat and a partner with use of only one arm... it could be worse!! Looks cluttered rather than filthy. I think if you got some decent storage and moved the bike and airer it would be much easier to keep the surfaces clear and cut down the time you need to spend keeping it clean and tidy.

Ctu24agent · 14/02/2025 19:33

Everyone has different standards. Does it work for YOU? If so, why does it matter what anyone else thinks?
for me, I’d have to tidy and de clutter. But if it works for you, why worry?

Ohwowno · 14/02/2025 19:47

The original photo makes me feel quite stressed But I’m a pathological minimalist who cannot function if there’s any mess, or just too much stuff and clutter. Also have 3 children and work full time.

BUT, as long as it’s clean enough, it’s fine if it works for you. I probably sacrifice too much down time for tidying, and maybe it’s not as relaxing in my house because I’m too conscious of anyone making a mess!

rainbowboymama · 14/02/2025 19:48

I also have 3 children; 7, 5 & 3, a partner and pregnant. Apart from the bike, I would say ours gets very similar every day! The dinner table does my head in, as the kids are always colouring at it/playing Lego or something similar. It just always seems messy no matter what storage solution or organisation method I come up with! We also have a severe lack of storage for the size of the house; so the top of the ONE long kitchen cupboard we have is home to things like cereal containers, trays, crisp plastic storage tub. I hate it. I hate clutter, but there’s nowhere to put this stuff! I’d say yours is a normal kitchen for the number of people and ages of children. We’re lucky that we have a decent size/shape landing, so our heated airer is permanently up, and on the landing. Our utility is another area that is useless, so I always have washing baskets with clean washing in, in the living room which does my head in! But I don’t have the time to fold and put everything away as soon as it’s dry 😩 Oh the mess and clutter….🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Flozle · 14/02/2025 19:48

Nope!

newyearnewme2025 · 14/02/2025 19:56

oh i'm really sorry OP but i couldn't live with a kitchen like that. the milk is still out, there's no lid on the marg, you've got rubbish everywhere! it looks to me like you have just given up! it wouldn't take a minute to tidy up, put rubbish away, move the laundry off the table!

if the 2nd picture i see is of your table cleared.... get the bloody cat off the table! yuk!

Childminder60 · 14/02/2025 20:22

Minebis similar I hate it

Oblomov25 · 14/02/2025 20:29

Good God Op that is really bad. Have a tidy up and it'll be a bit better.
Buy a cereal box and that'll help. Install some basics here and it'll all be a bit better.

Mine regularly looks like this and I tidy up a lot. Clean but messy this is me 🤣single mom with 2 young kids and I work. For the people that say how can it happen in a day, it certainly does in my world. It stresses me out, stops me from inviting people over but I just can’t keep on top of it. It is a tidy a lot bit it is also messy a lot. And yes I know I’m sure there will be plenty of single moms who have no support who managed just fine their kitchen was spotless 24/7 but unfortunately not me 😅

Mrsgreen100 · 14/02/2025 21:34

Think you’re not so secretly proud of your middle class mess, so just enjoy it or clean up

Is mess confined to the middle classes?

Barrenfieldoffucks · 14/02/2025 22:40

Here's mine. It's been worse, it's been better. I can't be arsed to tidy it right now, so I will do in the morning. We'll survive.

How is this mess remotely "middle class"? There's no sourdough or avocados in sight! 😂

Mrsgreen100 · 14/02/2025 23:11

Wow OP great job so much better, now maybe next challenge is to get the family eating around the table, at least a few times a week,
so understand tv dinners , but eating around the table as a family in our busy lives.has so many long term benefits, minus tech is so important ( check out the research around this)
post meal every one helps clear wash up etc
the long term benefits to children is proven
and you don’t get dumped with the mess !!!
at first it will probably be a war ground!but
my rule was you want to eat we eat as a tribe !!

Not sure what’s to be so proud of living in chaos. Clothes horse in a kitchen??
I find it hard to understand how anyone can live in such chaos.
