Buildings you've been in that are now demolished

Was thinking (randomly) about buildings I've been in during my life that have now been knocked down. I'm intrigued as to whether I have a disproportionately large number.

It's a bit weird to think that they are not there anymore, especially the really familiar ones that I spent so much time in. All those corridors and rooms long gone into rubble and dust.

Secondary school - demolished in the 90s and is now a housing estate.
My local nightclub where I spent many happy hours dancing, being chatted up, and snogging the locals 🤓 mysteriously burned down after redevelopment planning permission to change it into flats was refused, It's now flats. Of course.

First proper job office where I met my 1st husband. Now a housing estate (a theme is emerging.......)
First 'big job' office, now demolished and is currently a big hole in the ground. Think it's going to be flats.

Am I unusual to have left so many heaps of rubble in my past or do fellow vipers have a similar catalogue of building destruction in their wake?

Would love to hear your flattened-building stories.

Twin towers a week before 911.

secondary school

FortuneFaded · 12/02/2025 02:42

Two former schools: both to replace the buildings with new school buildings.

That’s it.

I often have vivid recurring dreams about buildings that I am sure I have never been in in my life, I go back to those a lot in dreams. Wish I could remember enough to write it down and do floor plans for some investigative work.

The building my dad lived in after my parents separated was knocked down and a huge office block was built there. I attended an insurance meeting in the new building purely to see the view from my dad’s old flat.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 12/02/2025 03:49

I feel like this too @ooooohnoooooo that destruction follows me!!
my infants school
junior school
the first 3 homes I lived in including my main childhood home
my uni block
my first two places of work
All knocked down for houses.
my secondary school closed.

The Palast der Republik (old East German Parliament building) in Berlin. DH and I went to an incredible art exhibition there in 2007, and it was demolished the following year.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 12/02/2025 04:53

World Trade Center. Can't think of any others.

taxguru · 12/02/2025 05:33

A theatre demolished to become a car park
A couple of hotels demolished to be care homes
Local hospital demolished to become nhs office block
My first town centre office where I started work - entire block demolished to be open entertainment space which is never used and taken over by druggies and alcoholics.

doodahdayy · 12/02/2025 05:34

The coronation street set that was used form the 80s until 2013.

Magpie50 · 12/02/2025 05:43

Local hospital I used to work at. I was gutted....I could of had a 5 minute walk to work!

NormasArse · 12/02/2025 05:45

The pier I lived opposite when I first left home. It burnt down, and then the owner put in a plan for flats on the site (it was refused).

The pub I worked in during my late teens. It burnt down, and then the owner put in a plan for flats on the site….

Same owner, different town 🤔.

The newspaper offices I worked in in my 20s. Now occupied by several fast food outlets.

The amazing country club building which used to house my favourite night club was demolished. There are now luxury houses on that land.

My high school was razed, and a new academy built. The building is much larger and uglier than the original.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 12/02/2025 06:00

The Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre. It was pink and had a Tesco inside it. As with everything in London, developers are "improving" the area.

BetteDavisChin · 12/02/2025 06:31

My childhood home. I was 9, my brother 6 and my sister 3.

Along with hundreds of others, our house was demolished as part of a clearance and rebuilding plan by the council.

We moved into a new council house miles away.

I felt very sad. Lots of little things I'd made and stories I'd written were thrown away.

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/02/2025 07:34

My primary school in north Bristol. It's now the site of a housing estate designed by Kevin Mccloud's company.
Two pubs both called The Wayfarer (also north Bristol). The first was one was demolished when a housing estate was built and the second one was built to replace it but faced onto another road on the edge of the building site. The second one then closed down and has never been replaced.

EarlierDistraction · 12/02/2025 07:44

The local shopping centre I frequented as a teen. Nightclub that I frequented as a student. My first two graduate jobs, both sites have been closed and flattened to be replaced by housing. My local sports centre, spent hundreds of hours there both for myself and with my DCs, but we have a shiny new one now. And the pub that for many years was where my friends and I would meet before football matches.

Newnameahoy · 12/02/2025 07:52

A multi storey car park in my local.town,.it was really tight and run down but always had spaces in the noughties when towns were busy. It was only a few weeks that I saw a post about it's demolition TEN YEARS AGO and realised it had gone.

The enormous county library, it was an absolute place of wonder to me right up until it closed; a huge high rise thing that I could spend hours in. It's now demolished and blocks of flats will be built there - all in the name of regeneration of course - the current regeneration of that area of town makes it look like a slum!

BistoBear · 12/02/2025 08:04

I feel like a bad penny with things like this…

Primary school, burned down in an arson attack by a boy in my year.

Secondary school, burned down in a deliberate fire.

First full time job, the factory blew up in an industrial accident after I left.

The office block for my part time job went on fire, unexplained.

Some of the pubs and clubs I frequented as a young adult were burned down in suspicious circumstances too.

The hotel I worked in for years had a fire but it was rebuilt.

On a positive note, the derelict mansion building we played in as children was sympathetically restored and is a now a beautiful building.

cakeorwine · 12/02/2025 08:05

Entire military base that we lived on demolished and turned into flats. It's so strange when I went back there as there were no clues that the old base existed.

Oh - and several houses that we used to live in have been knocked down and rebuilt to be more modern

ShapedLikeAPastry · 12/02/2025 08:08

My family home
The house my grandfather built and my mother grew up in
The school I attended for 14 years will be demolished this year

I'm sad about all of them!

UtterlyOtterly · 12/02/2025 08:08

The house where my first proper boyfriend lived in a house share. It was demolished along with others and is now the car park for an office block. Sometimes I go past and think how weird that I used to sleep up there in what is now just air.

mbosnz · 12/02/2025 08:33

I'm from Christchurch NZ, so it's a bit of a long list!

Um, Clarendon Towers, where I worked. Crowne Plaza, favourite hotel. St Mary's Church, where my girls were christened. Mushroom building, Engineering Lecture Building at Uni. Ditto, commerce building. Science Alive Building. QEII, where my girls had gym, and we swam. Office building where my husband worked. Beautiful listed house my cousin owned and lived in. House where we lived, Pines Beach. So, so many parking building and shops, including McKenzie Willis, which killed my friend and another woman and her baby when it came down on her. That's not exhaustive.

mbosnz · 12/02/2025 08:57

Valentino's Restaurant, Cafe Bleu, Troccadero Bakery (Shane died there), Christchurch Women's Hospital where I had my eldest, Central City Police Station (the police refused to work there anymore) Kaiapoi District Council where I used to work, the ice skating rink, Hotel Grand Chancellor (that was on one hell of a lean, and very exciting to watch come down), the Pet Store in Papanui, Carlton Pub, Cranmer Square Apartments, Chancery Shopping Arcade (my neighbour used to have a business there), my friend's shop in Manchester Street (her son and husband narrowly avoided getting killed as the frontage collapsed). . . okay, I'll stop now. Still not exhaustive. . .

mbosnz · 12/02/2025 09:00

Sorry, forgot to add, the Aquarium! That one was very upsetting.

ooooohnoooooo · 12/02/2025 09:04

Oh Lordy. I just posted a long response to this and I think I put it on another thread by ccudent 😬😑🤓

If anyone spots it, please let me know

Loads of old pubs and working men’s clubs that are now blocks of flats, too many to mention if I’m honest.
My old nursery and infant school is now a housing estate when they turned most of the middle schools into primary schools in the 90’s.
