Buildings you've been in that are now demolished

Was thinking (randomly) about buildings I've been in during my life that have now been knocked down. I'm intrigued as to whether I have a disproportionately large number.

It's a bit weird to think that they are not there anymore, especially the really familiar ones that I spent so much time in. All those corridors and rooms long gone into rubble and dust.

Secondary school - demolished in the 90s and is now a housing estate.
My local nightclub where I spent many happy hours dancing, being chatted up, and snogging the locals 🤓 mysteriously burned down after redevelopment planning permission to change it into flats was refused, It's now flats. Of course.

First proper job office where I met my 1st husband. Now a housing estate (a theme is emerging.......)
First 'big job' office, now demolished and is currently a big hole in the ground. Think it's going to be flats.

Am I unusual to have left so many heaps of rubble in my past or do fellow vipers have a similar catalogue of building destruction in their wake?

Would love to hear your flattened-building stories.

The hotel we stayed in in NYC before kids. Went back a few years ago and it no longer stands.
My uni halls of residence
The office building I worked in for 8 years. Well actually that is still standing. It was due to be demolished but that phase of redevelopment has been paused so now its just an empty building

My aunt and uncle's beautiful period house which was compulsorily purchased in the 60s, and demolished for”development”. These days it would be listed.

A whole street of terraced houses in London that we squatted in, which were demolished and replaced with… more terraced houses, but of an aggressively modern design. None of the other streets of similar houses were demolished, it was a bit weird.
(I should add for clarity, that several streets of these houses in the area were being emptied for development, and were all due for demolition. Only a few had residents still in them, and many empty houses were squatted at the time. I guess the Local Authority ran out of money or changed its plans.)

The village pub, round the corner from my childhood home, which was a nice big building, with bay windows, and a beautiful garden with mature trees. All gone now, for an estate of modern houses.

Maternity hospital i was born in.
Part of a hospital/old workhouse.
Dock office buildings (half fallen down at that point so not sure it counts).
Part of my old primary school (if prefab buildings count? 😂).
Two secondary schools.
A building from sixth form.
University accommodation.
Theatre.
A few houses.
A few shops.
A church.
A register office.
A pub.
Two stadiums.

There should be more but I live in a place that boards old buildings up instead of pulling them down. Well, until they're conveniently set alight. Even got part of a bombed building still, and another one was only redeveloped about 20 years ago.

Greentableleg · 14/02/2025 16:07

My old school and both the hospitals I gave birth to each of my sons in!

ohtowinthelottery · 14/02/2025 16:10

My Secondary school was demolished to make way for a new supermarket.
The theatre where I went to my very 1st pop concert at the age of 13 to see David Essex.

lemoncheesecakemaker · 16/02/2025 07:08

My husband and I met in the 90s on my gap year working at Pontin’s in Blackpool. The whole site was demolished a few years ago. Shame as would’ve been fun to take the children.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 16/02/2025 07:17

The house my grandfather and father and me were born in.
Lots of shops.
And pubs and clubs, farewell Turnups, The Three Tuns and the Limit. All the old cinemas in Sheffield. The Hole i’nt Road.
And of course, the old Egg Box council offices, revolutionary in its day, nightmare open plan inside.

Literally the only thing I can think of is the watch tower platforms over the Berlin wall. Not exactly a building but bet they’re not there anymore.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/02/2025 07:33

The halls of residence where i first met DH and the student flats where I first started going out with him have been demolished. The venue where we had our wedding reception has also been demolished. I'm not sure what this says about us but we have managed to stay married for almost 40 years!

ChompandaGrazia · 16/02/2025 07:36

My secondary school. It was very odd, they spent ages rewiring the place only to knock it down the next year.

My old flat in Manchester. I lived in the attic flat of one of those big red brick Manchester houses. I looked it up on Google only to see that it had been photographed half way through knocking it down. From google maps you could actually see inside my flat as they’d taken the roof off.

Seemslikethat · 16/02/2025 09:15

My infants school - became a car park for junior school.
My sixth form school - rebuilt on the lower school site.
My local library - I still think about this one a lot actually.
Local swimming baths
Sports centre in the next town - two separate arson attacks by teenagers
The flats where my dad lived after my parents split up.
The local community centre / theatre
The hotel / pub that was the ‘posh’ pub in town when I was a child - we often went there for Christenings - now a small housing estate
The maternity unit where I had my first two children - also now a car park
The small local cinema where I saw my first film

Apparently I’ve also left a trail of destruction in my wake!

When I fled the ex with my 4 now adult children by him 25 years ago, we had the unfortunancy to ge placed to begin with in a place so horrible the street has since been demolished (I kid you not)

My childhood home. I was 9, my brother 6 and my sister 3.

Along with hundreds of others, our house was demolished as part of a clearance and rebuilding plan by the council.

We moved into a new council house miles away.

I felt very sad. Lots of little things I'd made and stories I'd written were thrown away.

I'm so sorry. love to you all x

EleanorReally · 16/02/2025 09:40

my primary school,
now scout rooms

The Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre. It was pink and had a Tesco inside it. As with everything in London, developers are "improving" the area.

Was that the one that had branch of Boots with the really old Boots signage outside (wedgewood blue with white cursive 'Boots' on it)?

EleanorReally · 16/02/2025 09:48

a lovely listed pub Courage beer, no longer a pub but as it is a listed building, it is still there

Not that I recall.

stringbean · 16/02/2025 11:05

The hospital I trained in in central London. They've kept the chapel and a listed facade but the rest has been replaced by an impersonal block of luxury flats. Never seems to be anyone there, so can only assume they're owned by people who either live overseas or have multiple other homes....

Theunamedcat · 16/02/2025 11:11

Office building where I had to claim income support 23 years ago is now a car park the steps are still there it made quite a small carpark for such a huge building

Middle school was knocked down they then wasted money for YEARS trying to get the land use changed for housing however the land was donated under a covenant that it was ONLY to be used as a school almost fifteen years later a school was built sadly not big enough but it's a school!

My first flat is about to be demolished it was the first home my daughter ever knew

merryhouse · 16/02/2025 12:25

hospital S1 was born in (new one on same site)
different hospital, that I went into once by mistake, now student accommodation
bowling alley that had been the ice rink
passport office (replaced by a development which is kind of on hiatus but ought to be a hotel; new ppo on site of the bowling alley)
library (now fancy housing; new one other side of city centre)
swimming baths (new one near the new library and bowling alley)
multi-storey car park (new one on same site)
Kwik-Fit, now part of more student accommodation
shopping centre, now cinema and restaurants
a secondary school where the kids had a sports camp, now housing

(any locals spotted where I live?)

Various shops in my home town, including the Co-Op department store where we used to get our Clarks shoes, replaced in the 80s by a new shopping centre; and the swimming baths, possibly part of the same centre

TheFormidableMrsC · 16/02/2025 12:27
