I think there's a difference between wanting to see the hostages released (which I imagine pretty much everyone posting on this thread would like to see) and explaining the reasons it won't necessarily happen, in answer to the question 'why not release them?'.

In return for very few hostages, large numbers of Palestinian prisoners have been released.

There is zero justification for Hamas to continue to hold the hostages. Of course they must be released immediately,
without qualification. Deeply worrying and shocking that some posters are unable to support this.

It means that they made a deal to hand the hostages over so that's what they should do. Sending them in dribs and drabs is a joke and makes people question more and more whether the hostages are even alive.

They can't be allowed unlimited time and sometimes pressure needs to be applied.

Seems like despite the scenes of the hostages being handed over, the well dressed, well fed terrorists and emaciated hostages....they are still winning the pr war with the middle class, lefty sheep just lapping it up.

It means more children will die. They don’t care about politics or land territories but they will die in countless horrible ways through the greed of evil old men.

Haven't Isreal already broken the terms though ? And I certainly don't think the excursions in the West Bank were in line with any ceasefire

Again, explaining what the justification being presented is does not equal supporting it. It's answering the question 'why not release them?'. They are Hamas' only bargaining chip and they don't trust Israel.

The footage of those poor men at the weekend was heartbreaking. The whole situation across the board is horrendous. The people caught up in this on both sides are suffering enormously. The hostages are pawns.

At the cost? There's no cost to giving hostages back! It's the right thing to do! What are you even arguing for?

Just give the hostages back! Then no annihilation!

And then next week, what happens? Do you really think Israel won't attack again or Hamas?

Hold onto hostages, risk annihilation and a restart of the war. Also risk possible forced displacement.

Of course there’s a cost to giving the hostages back. They’re Hamas’ only collateral and that’s why they’ll drag it out as long as possible. Let’s face it, 90% of the annihilation has already happened and it’s not hard to see why Hamas assume the remaining 10% will happen once they’ve given back what is in effect their only insurance policy. Of course we don’t like it but it’s naive in the extreme or wilfully ignorant of you to not see why they won’t just hand them all over.

Again. Please tell me how releasing the hostages results in more children dying?
