Shockingly underweight model in TV ad

IdaPrentice · 09/02/2025 21:25

Has anyone seen the TV ad for Dylon (of all things)? - it features two female models, the first (with afro hair) is wearing a loose top / pant suit so it's hard to tell, but seems pretty thin, but the second, wearing red, is so so thin. Her arms just go in a straight line, no curve of any kind of muscle, she's bordering on skeletal, her face looks gaunt too.

I just saw the ad for the second time - by coincidence I'd just read an article (think it was on BBC news website) about how fashion houses have moved away from 'body positivity' and plus size models, and thin is back. The theory is this is partially influenced by all the Hollywood stars on Ozempic.

This is so unhealthy to put on TV as the kind of female beauty that everyone should aspire to. I really thought we'd moved past it now. Depressing.

I am size 16 , my bmi is 22.5 I am certainly not hefty, how rude.

The PP probably meant it's hefty when coupled with the average height, which I think is 5ft 4"?

Pippinsdiary · 09/02/2025 22:34

24 is classed as healthy weight, so no?

Don't children use different ways to measure whether they are a healthy weight. A 16 year old will not be her full adult size/shape.

Hmm well maybe they should have said that, I am 5”10.

I suspect that if pictures of overweight models were criticised in such a way that the posts would be removed fairly swiftly. As a society, it seems acceptable to criticise healthy, slim women.

Let's see. If we're talking about adverts, I was shocked to see a massively obese woman advertising chewing gum on the TV, she was enormous and way way beyond any healthy range, she must be morbidly obese. That is neither healthy, attractive or aspirational.
That's what people should be complaining about, not a very slim but normal healthy model.

Depends on the brand and why you are a 16. Even at my slimmest, I was still a 14 in my top because of my breasts, I was a 10 in trousers.

Can you link the advert?

ItsAShine · 09/02/2025 23:51

I was on the fence but there’s one shot towards the end where she’s looking over her shoulder. I paused it and her shoulders look very bony. I would say she is very thin despite what the MN weight brigade would say. I can’t say I would have paid that much attention to an advert in the first place to notice it though.

You’re right, but the world’s gone a bit mad now hasn’t it? You’d get disciplined if you called someone ‘fat’ now as you could offend them. In the same way you would if you said a man can’t be a woman…

It’s all about feelings these days. People say you can be healthy and obese which is questionable and that obesity isn’t a choice.

Different world now

As a PP said, this thread would probably be pulled by now if it were the other way around but because it’s about someone slim that’s fair game apparently

Being at least 5 feet 8/9 tall and a size 8 is still the norm for most working models even now -

size 6-8 usually.

I think it depends on the brand - even for something like Paris Fashion Week which tends to have the thinnest “girls”,the majority will still have at least 34 inch hips which is still usually a size 8. It’s just really hard for any woman to get below that hip measurement- it’s ridiculous that a few brands apparently still encourage it.

I agree in “high fashion” we are seeing more and more 31 inch busts and/or 23 inch waists though which is a size 6. But those women often get less general commercial work - so I do suspect the woman in the advert is a size 8.

Zanatdy · 09/02/2025 23:54

Can’t see the issue

Disciplined? You mean at work?
Why would you call someone at work fat? I do not go around making comments on peoples bodies at work. How rude.

I think in their rush to be offended people are missing the fact that the OP isn't criticising skinny women as individuals but the fashion and beauty industry that projects skinny as the only beautiful body type, which is something many of us who have suffered with eating disorders rather hoped had been left behind in the 90's with Heroin chic.

blueshoes · 09/02/2025 23:57

You can see more of the model's bony ribs because she did not put breast implants in. We are probably used to seeing implants.

In general, it’s a taboo word, but skinny, skeletal is fine

beadystar · 09/02/2025 23:59

She looks tall and slender, the ectomorphic type naturally, but not underweight. Overweight has been normalised in society to the extent that lighter people get called things like 'skeletal'.

wipeywipe · 10/02/2025 00:00

@IamnotwhouthinkIam that's why I said 6-8. Although i thought 34 inch hips was a 6.

JoyousGreyOrca · 10/02/2025 00:00

ThoroughlyModernNotMillie · 09/02/2025 23:55

This one.

She is not modelling clothing. Wrigley have made a series of adverts with different people starring in it, to appeal to different audiences. It is whatever sells. You are not the target audience for this advert.

wipeywipe · 10/02/2025 00:01

If the model looks a healthy BMI what do people think an underweight BMI looks like?

Do not talk rot. People talk about someone being fat all the time. Look on MN for a start.

IncessantNameChanger · 10/02/2025 00:03

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 23:33

They have a healthy BMI - unlike 64% on adults in the UK.

How do you know that? 5ft 10.5 with a 23.5 inch waist & 31 inch bust is very slim

Is that her waist? My 10 year old has a 23" waist and is slim very active girl. She can fit into age 7-8 clothes. So petit for her age.

I have said this before but my adult son is 5,7 and weighs just under eight stone. He has a 28" waist and people have asked me repeatedly is he has a eating disorder. By this standard he seems obese and my dd morbidly so. What hell is normal? My sons bmi the last time I checked was 17. His bmi is underweight.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 10/02/2025 00:05

This stuff often goes on cycles - skinny was the ideal in the 60’s with Twiggy and cohort and again in the 90’s with Heroin Chic and Kate Moss and Co. Hopefully soon we will have the 80’s fitness model style look back again (Cindy Crawford et al) when many of the women at least looked like very toned size 10’s (albeit tall so they still looked much thinner than average).

The bit I’ve never understand most about modelling is why even now most models have to be a Size 8 - or a Size 16. I guess Size 12 would just look distinctly “average” (even on a tall, beautiful woman) so the fashion world seems to rarely bother with it 🤣

wipeywipe · 10/02/2025 00:06

@IncessantNameChanger according to her model card & that's the normal model waist. Yes it's equivalent to a 10 yrs waist. Models are very thin in real life.

JoyousGreyOrca · 10/02/2025 00:01

Yeah of course on here, but a Dr or Nurse couldn’t say “Right Lesley, you’re fat so you need to lose weight”

If someone complained they’d get in to trouble (for doing their job!) They have to teeter around the subject so not to offend.

Toddlerhelpplease123 · 10/02/2025 00:08

Well she’s skinny yes. Outrageously so I think is a stretch.
