Shockingly underweight model in TV ad

Has anyone seen the TV ad for Dylon (of all things)? - it features two female models, the first (with afro hair) is wearing a loose top / pant suit so it's hard to tell, but seems pretty thin, but the second, wearing red, is so so thin. Her arms just go in a straight line, no curve of any kind of muscle, she's bordering on skeletal, her face looks gaunt too.

I just saw the ad for the second time - by coincidence I'd just read an article (think it was on BBC news website) about how fashion houses have moved away from 'body positivity' and plus size models, and thin is back. The theory is this is partially influenced by all the Hollywood stars on Ozempic.

This is so unhealthy to put on TV as the kind of female beauty that everyone should aspire to. I really thought we'd moved past it now. Depressing.

Goodness, the endless screenshots of this model and her bones. Imagine if the bodies of the Snag models were analysed this way.

I suspect that if pictures of overweight models were criticised in such a way that the posts would be removed fairly swiftly. As a society, it seems acceptable to criticise healthy, slim women.

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 23:12

she's a model so is going to be skinny & likely an underweight BMI but plenty will tell you we don't know what healthy looks like 😆

I think this is the model.

You only have to look at photos from 30/40 years ago to see the stark contrast of the size of people in general from then and now.

People on the street are bigger but I think
models and actresses are thinner now than 30 yrs ago.

They look pretty fabulous to me. Thinner models will always be used in fashion. The clothes look better on them (I didn’t say that,Vivienne Westwood did)

Uh, my 16 yo has a BMI of 24.
Is she overweight?

No, she is at the higher end of a normal BMI. 25 and over is considered overweight.

Funnywonder · 09/02/2025 23:20

I think both women look very slim indeed, but neither looks unhealthy. Some people have a smaller frame than others. That's life.

OneLilacGuide · 09/02/2025 23:21

Did you notice the man has slim arms, do you also think he is shockingly underweight? Or is it just the women we’re scrutinising 😩

doodahdayy · 09/02/2025 23:21

Ffs she's very slim but not skeletal. People are so desperate to be offended

KittenPause · 09/02/2025 23:21

They just look like normal healthy tall slim women

StrikeAlways · 09/02/2025 23:22

I’ve seen a lot thinner. They look okay to me. The Princess of Wales (before cancer) is much admired, but ridiculously thin.

Pyjamatimenow · 09/02/2025 23:24

It’s like Nicole Kidman. I reckon that woman is 8st and she’s nearly 6ft. It’s not healthy but neither are all these plus size models you see on adverts. We’re seeing a lot of diversity in models these days including people with disabilities and facial differences. Some of those won’t be ‘healthy’ either but they’re still people and I think the point is people of all types and variations of health need and wear clothes.

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 23:25

It would be good to have models that are in the healthy BMI zone rather than the extremes.

blueshoes · 09/02/2025 23:27

She has the same figure as Amal Clooney.

Is Amal shockingly slim? Looks like her natural (enviable) body type.

Certain clothes look better. Some clothes do not.

Sapienza · 09/02/2025 23:28

They look like healthy tall slim women.

They have a healthy BMI - unlike 64% on adults in the UK.

JoyousGreyOrca · 09/02/2025 23:29

Amal Clooney does not look as slim as this model.

Spendysis · 09/02/2025 23:32

She looks slim to me but not unhealthy.

Mmmm19 · 09/02/2025 23:33

Both look great and healthy to me. And that’s not to say other shapes and sizes can’t also look great and be healthy.

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 23:33

How do you know that? 5ft 10.5 with a 23.5 inch waist & 31 inch bust is very slim

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 23:35

I mean it's your average 9 or 10 yr olds waist size but most 9 yr olds aren't anywhere near that tall..,,

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 09/02/2025 23:38

I find that unless it’s a brand targeting “plus size” women, then most brands still only “embrace all sizes” if they are featuring a lot of different models - then they’ll sometimes have one or two token size 12 or above models (and occasionally even one model older than her 30’s too -unless maybe it’s a brand thats already targeting an “older” market).

Being an average of 5 foot 10 tall and a size 8 is still the norm for most working models even now - and I suspect that’s what the model in the advert is. They try to justify it because that’s the standard “sample size” for high end clothes- and if a model fits it then they get more work as they can do both higher end stuff and commercial gigs rather than being limited to just one end of the market.

I suppose we just have to grateful that we have moved on from the days when both models would have been white and “diversity” counted as having one blond and one brunette 🤷‍♀️

They’re both slim, but definitely not skeletal. No doubt someone will start quoting that the average uk size is 16, it always crops up on these threads.
size 16 is hefty. Just because it’s average doesn’t change the fact.

I am size 16 , my bmi is 22.5 I am certainly not hefty, how rude.

denhaag · 09/02/2025 23:40

LaurieFairyCake · 09/02/2025 23:05

That picture alohamo posted is much more useful than the advert.

The advert was moving too fast to see anything!

There are two pictures on Aloha's link and yes, the arm is very thin. But even more concerning is the second picture where she's throwing her head back - if you zoom in you can see three breastbones Shock

I don't think we're supposed to see breast bones on a healthy weighted woman? Someone correct me if I'm wrong and you can actually be a 20+ plus BMI with them all showing ?

BMI less than 18.5 is underweight. I very much doubt catwalk models have a BMI of 20. Most are likely somewhat underweight, it's no secret. Some are naturally very, very slim.

My ribs are visible. I ran a cross country race today - there were loads of really lean people (men and women). Some people are naturally very thin and their bones show.

I would put money that the one in red does not have healthy bmi. Being 8st at 5ft 10 or more is not a healthy bmi. It’s probably about 16.

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 23:41

Being at least 5 feet 8/9 tall and a size 8 is still the norm for most working models even now -

size 6-8 usually.
