lighthearted - things you’ve been asked postpartum

EBF and c-section delivery

3 weeks postpartum: “why don’t you start 5km runs again?”

3 weeks postpartum: “why don’t you leave her with me you can get your hair and nails done for the day?”

8 weeks postpartum: “have you managed to get to the gym much?”

😂 sometimes i just have to laugh or it will drive me mad

I take it you EBF? Ah sorry you do

sounds like you have caring people in your life
and a couple you haven’t recently given birth or not at all

2 days PP after a 3 day induction and forceps delivery: can we just courier some documents over for you to have a Quick Look and check the contract language?

I was a lawyer, client had moved up their deal deadline, useless boss didn’t want to actually read the file and detailed handover briefing.

I think I laughed slightly hysterically and said no, and that i was going back to sleep now.

How did they think this was a good idea that was to be well received 😂

My father 3 days PP 'Im surprised to see how much of a tummy you still have ...'

Thornybush · 09/02/2025 08:10

I was doing office work for a family business. My baby was two days old when I was asked if I had done the payroll. I had handed it over a few days before I went into labour but trainee thought they'd have the chance for more training before I gave birth. I said "sorry you'll need to figure it out as I'm exhausted and not thinking straight" It still annoys me years later.

To be fair… I was surprised how much of a tummy I had. I’d thought that I’d give birth and it would go down much much more than it did.

OMGitsnotgood · 09/02/2025 08:15

This will be a common one but still makes me chuckle. Day after giving birth and a painful episiotomy, being asked what I wanted to do about contraception. I told them DH was going to be sleeping in the garage

ZookeeperSE · 09/02/2025 08:16

Similar to Bestthriller, 2 days pp and a young guy on the checkout in Sainsburys asked
’Aww, when’s it due?’ . He was mortified when I replied ‘er, I had her Monday’ . I wasn’t offended though as I did still have a belly (also surprised me it disappear immediately)

ChristmasLightsLover · 09/02/2025 08:30

Are you getting some kind of sexual thing out of breastfeeding? I don't understand why you're doing it...

That was my MIL, who had formula fed my DH and SIL.

TickingAlongNicely · 09/02/2025 08:33

I was annoyed enough by my husbands employer expecting him at work while I was still on the postnatal ward, can't believe it happened to mothers as well. I thought there was a legal period after birth? (4weeks?)

I think you're right but some smaller businesses seem to think they are an exception to employment law! Also everything is last minute. They knew for ages that I was pregnant but waited until the very end to get someone else in 😡

2 hours PP, from a HCA in the hospital:

'Are you going to try again for a little girl, a Christmas conception?'

I had just had my second son and it was the week before Christmas!

That’s so ridiculous!! I think I’ll still remember the comments in years to come too

4 weeks postpartum shopping for a maternity bra. “when are you due?” 😭
The baby was in a pram in the shop with me but my mum had just taken him outside.

She was quick on her feet when I said that’s him over there. “It’s policy, we just ask everyone who buys maternity bras”. 🤣

Good grief! Does he have NO idea of anything?! Was he this stupid towards your Mum when you were born?

I need some replies to these ridiculous questions like what do I even say to “why don’t you start 5km runs?”

I just have no response

'Because my fanny has just been ripped to shreds' (whether true or not) might shut them up.

I'm a doctor, and gave birth in the hospital where I was working at the time. This had a few advantages, but also meant that my supervisor came into my delivery room an hour or two postpartum, when I'd been sutured up but not had a shower or anything, and asked

"When you get home, could you possibly email me those rota guidelines you wrote?"

I was so befuddled I just agreed!
