Amandaland - location confusion?

Cardiganray · 08/02/2025 23:01

Can anyone clear up for me where Amandaland is set? They talk about South Harlesden ‘so ha’ but then it’s the Hounslow football team? These are totally different parts of London. Am I missing something?

Have none of you watched any of the Harlen Coben series on Netflix? They're hopping all over Manchester centre, turning a corner and they're in Bury, then down the road they're in Bolton, then around the next corner they're in Cheshire.

roselilylavender · 09/02/2025 08:13

It's TV not real life!
I remember DS aged 8 shouting at the TV when watching a series filmed near us and places just weren't in the right location.
Also, he plays for one of our town's team. He trains a mile away from where we live. We are about to head off to his match which is a "home" fixture but the pitch is 9 miles away. DD, on the other hand, plays for the town 10 miles away, trains at the same venue as DS and her "home" fixtures are 6 miles in a different direction which is also 10 miles from the town they are linked too. Grassroots football is growing and there is huge pressure on finding pitches. Plus you might not play for your local team as there may not be places, you might not like the coach or the other kids or something.

So Ha , as Anne described. Is the bit by Wormwood Scrubs

That neighbours Acton

I think the writers of the programme had a laugh and said, let's upset the Mumsnetters by playing around with it a bit

fingerbobz · 09/02/2025 08:34

@MadisonAvenue

Yes that's right

They also mentioned Acton a few times

KindLemur · 09/02/2025 08:34

This is the answer I was looking for thank you

I don’t find it annoying and it’s not impacting my daily life I just wanted to discuss the timeline of it all 😂😩

I take my dd to the other side of my town to dancing because well that’s where the dance class I chose is, I must drive past about 4 dance classes to get there. And my friends have kids that play football literally all over the north west so I get that, I just didn’t get how the kids on Amanda land all ended up at the SAME team. And where is baby Niamh! Would she not only be about 4 years old???

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 09/02/2025 08:37

I heard that the whole thing is made up!

It is just concocted by a group of people in a room somewhere, (or possibly in different rooms in different places - I'm not quite sure).

They film these right near me ! Like they use the car park of the high school 0.3 miles from my house as a base. All the woodland type scenes are by the reservoir near us. They make it look really remote. Also Bolton town centre Le Mans crescent look it up, so many things filmed there and they make it look like central London in real life change the camera angle and you’ve got teens gaping a load of closed down shops and the 70+ crowd sat outside the sit -down chippy chainsmoking 😂👌

fingerbobz · 09/02/2025 08:39

This has been bothering me but more so, im annoyed with myself for overthinking the logistics of a sitcom

Spottedplant · 09/02/2025 09:06

haha I was surprised that in Motherland they came to the fish restaurant that was in Askew Road and thought they would have gone to Chiswick... you can't help it when you live near there!

This is dumb. It's TV for goodness' sake, learn to suspend disbelief about locations!

Bond parked his Aston Martin outside my office in the last film. Have I been working for M16 all these years and had not realised?

Why not let people have a chat without insulting them?

GCAcademic · 09/02/2025 00:35

South Harlesden and Hounslow are about eight miles apart. It’s not that far.

that’s a really long way in terms of schools/socialising/bumping into each other! that’d be like me saying I’m very close to St Albans centre? but amplified because London is very densely populated with homes and facilities

CherryMarigold · 09/02/2025 09:26

I get the football team thing, one of my sons started playing for a local team which moved 20mins away as the contract for the pitch ended. Over the years various school friends have either got into football or wanted to move teams, there was one point where his coach asked him to stop recommending his team to his mates as they had no room for them.

I don't get Anns missing children though or the fact Ann seems to have drastically downsized.

Flicitytricity · 09/02/2025 09:33

If you're puzzled by this, try being a Northerner watching 'Vera', that would really blow your mind🤣

RobinEllacotStrike · 09/02/2025 10:25

Chiswick is in London Borough of Hounslow.

I didn't recognise Chiswick in Motherland at all. (I worked in Chiswick for 20 years.)
I thought it was Queen's Park.

But if Amanda did live in Chiswick the move to SoHa wouldn't be too far away. But far away enough.

Has Anne moved to Harlesden too? Odd.

I love how Anne has a PhD too. I wonder if she is back in her role at GlaxoSmithKline as Head of International Product Development ? Or what new job does she have? Is she SAHM now?

Chiswick is one of those suburbs that gets extended a long way by estate agents and the socially desperate.

RobinEllacotStrike · 09/02/2025 10:30

I must remember to tell my daughters they were born in SoHa - with a view of Wormwood Scrubs no less. 🤣

mewkins · 09/02/2025 10:41

Spottedplant · 09/02/2025 07:25

The school in original Motherland was shot at Southfields which is in between Bedford Park, (the north end of Chiswick) and the south side of Acton and a sort of nothingy area to the east before you get to Shepherds Bush. So Anne could have said she lived in Acton if she lived anywhere around there and Amanda would definitely definitely say she lived in Chiswick and have gravitated to the High Road for shopping etc. More of a challenge is where Liz is meant to have lived.

South Harlesden isn't a well known area, the joke is that she's calling it that to make it sound better. You'd probably call it Wormwood Scrubs IRL or maybe Park Royal? And the football club could easily be called Hounslow (is it called Hounslow?) and be based anywhere round there - a bit weird tho because Hounslow is more south West and nearer to Chiswick. Anne and Amanda might go back that way as they know it, but it'd be a coincidence if the downstairs neighbour also happened to go there as it's not close. It's very normal to live round here and drive about - it's just more the issue of why would you all go to the same club in the same different area.

Liz lived in flats exactly opposite the primary school.

The neighbour is the coach for that team so I'm guessing that's why everyone is going out of their way to go there - guessing he lived there before he divorced and moved further away but continued coaching the team?

I grew up in North London and would frequently socialise with school chums that distance away (some of them also travelled that distance to school every day). Where I live now (Home Counties, not the Scottish Highlands!), my nearest town and supermarket are eight miles away, and it seems like no distance at all.

Hedgehogsaremything · 09/02/2025 16:19

Even funnier for me is that round here SOHA is the local housing association. So when Amanda says "I'm living in So Ha" it sounds like an even bigger downturn of fortunes.

Crunchymum · 09/02/2025 16:44

The actual filming location for Amanda's house was Highbury N5 (excuse DM link!)

I thought it was Queens Park. Don’t think it was ever Chiswick so not sure how that’s now come into it.

it’s called artistic license. It’s not supposed to be a documentary about living in Harlesden! It could equally be an affluent area of Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh

I think Motherland was just meant to be an ‘affluent London suburb’ …it could be one of many areas in London- and these areas change over time.

The areas will be based on filming locations. It might technically be south Harlesden ( only to get the SoHa gag in) but they won’t choose a storyline based around actually living there- the Hounslow football pitch will have been chosen because of logistics, and ease of filming there.

I think scenes have been filmed in Acton, Chiswick and various north London locations.

I remember a friend of mine who couldn’t watch inspector Morse because he’d walk into one college, but be shown walking around the quad of another. Used to drive her nuts- but it’s fiction!

wipeywipe · 09/02/2025 16:57

it's not a documentary 😆

Liz originally lived in a terraced house in the pilot. It wasn’t particularly posh inside ( typical home with young kids) but easily would cost north of £1m in that area ( and about 2.5k - 3k to rent)

they obviously changed it for the series to a flat because there’s no way a single mum on benefits would be in a place like that.

Scott and Bailey was like this. My favourite was when they walked down steps next to the ELR in Bury, turned left and were near Deansgate.

jano69 · 09/02/2025 17:05

Motherland was filmed at Southfields School in Chiswick, so yep definitely Chiswick.

Always assumed both her homes were housing association. The house Lee lived in she referred to as their old family home.
