Do you ever WFH in bed?

I have an office job. All I need is my laptop. Yes a big screen helps, but my job is mostly excel and then some word and PowerPoint.

Someday (especially when I have anxiety) I like working in bed and feeling all cosy.

Does anyone else do this?

Years ago, I worked a day shift but was on call for set tasks during the night.
(I did get paid for the call out hours, but not really enough for all the disturbance)

I could maybe check a couple of servers, but then would have to go to the cold kitchen, as I might need to call the on call team, who worked a night shift in the office

I was once so ill with flu and could barely talk that the night team didn’t recognise my voice, but was still expected to cover the night shift requests

There were regular checks to do too, so it wasn’t a case of being called. I had to wake and check at certain hours in the night

So I felt entitled to do some basic checks from bed, as this night on call shift was additional to my day shift, and only if there was a serious outage, could I possibly be a little late into the office in the morning.

26 was pregnant and need to do an hour or two from bed most days just to get through… before this, never!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/02/2025 22:27

Very, very occasionally, like twice a year. I’m a lecturer and do one wfh day a week, but I have camera-on calls with students and also like to get up, shower, makeup, dress right away. If I stayed in my pjs it would feel like a Sunday (when I will happily slob around with unwashed hair all day!) and not right. I sit at the kitchen table usually, sometimes move to the couch in the living room late afternoon.

When I have done it I should really have been off sick but was able to muddle away with no meetings, just doing bits of admin and marking.

Firsttimetrier · 07/02/2025 22:30

When I was dying in the first trimester of pregnancy and the last trimester, I did some work from bed. Never took calls from bed and was always fully dressed etc for work, but easy admin bits I did in bed as I felt rough.

Fucking hell. Every single week, including this one, there’s a thread on here moaning about tyrannical employers who want people in the office and how awful they are and WFH is more productive, blah, blah, blah and here you all talking about not even getting out of bed to work.

SecondMrsTanqueray · 07/02/2025 22:31

All the time. When I wfh, I work from my bed. I put a teams background on for meetings, and clothes on my top half. 😬

Bit harsh! I accept it’s not for everyone and obviously if you’re in regular teams meetings it doesn’t work, but in some jobs I’m sure it would be perfectly possible to work in bed from time to time without it affecting your output. It’s nice to be up, clean and ready, but I don’t see how these things alter your ability to operate a computer.

FYI I don’t work from home, but I don’t look down my nose at those that do either.

Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to sound harsh at all. I do WFH FT. Just not in a job where I could work in bed. Or where I'd want to. It would be dreadful for my posture too!

Letstheriveranswer · 07/02/2025 22:32

No, I need my proper work set up, adjustable chair, screen, desk, keyboard and mouse

I do a lot of spreadsheet work and no way could I manage that on a tiny laptop! And I'd ache, I'm middle aged!

I also have video calls during the day.

Not for computer work - I prefer a large screen. But sometimes I have to read and digest hundreds of pages of documents in hard copy. I find that really uncomfortable at my desk, and it is distracting to have emails popping up, etc so I move to my bed or the sofa to read.

I do my most productive work from home. I have a home office, but choose to stay in my toasty bed. I go into the office 2 or 3 days per week and get bugger all done.

I'd rather not call you for a query while you are in bed. I make the effort to go in to work, so should you.

Perhaps people just aren't very interested in what you do in your work. Especially for those people whose jobs don't involve you ringing them. Radical I know!

That said, I don't work in bed. Doubt it'd do my back any good.

ShatnersWoodwind · 07/02/2025 21:07

Unfortunately these days hunching over a laptop in bed would totally screw up my neck and back. Need to have my special chair and adjustable height monitors!

Same here
And i fall asleep if I stay in bed

PerambulationFrustration · 07/02/2025 22:34

My friend just told me today that she worked from her bed all day. It was a pretty easy day with no meetings and I thought what a good idea! I never thought to do that but I will from now on the days I have boring admin tasks.

Florence19791 · 07/02/2025 22:35

No not all day. Usually the first hour or two then I get up when I need another brew and get showered.

HowardTJMoon · 07/02/2025 22:36

No, I try to make sure my bedroom is a screens-free area (my kindle doesn't count as a screen for this. Fight me). I like to keep work to my spare bedroom / home office because that way I can close the door at the end of the day and it disappears.

Just recently I did a bit for the first hour. I was both newly grieving and had a virus. Back to working at the table most of the time but won’t say no to a bed start when I really need it:

I’ve wfh, from my bed, all day today. I’ve chaired 3 meetings.

How would you know I was in bed? I was presentable and had a bland Teams background on. It makes no difference.

ilovesushi · 07/02/2025 22:39

No. I wouldn't want the association of work in my bedroom. I either sit at a very specific stool in the kitchen which I never sit at out of work hours or I work in the study unless DH gets there first. DH will work sitting on the bed but not for meetings obviously.

blueshoes · 07/02/2025 22:41

I love being in bed and reading in bed. But I would be taking the piss to work from my laptop in bed.

Never had the desire to. Anyway, I need at least dual screens for work, if not triple screens. WFH in bed is not an option.

Even when working on holiday on my laptop, I would be working on the dining table. Same with dh.

I do. Several times a week. I put on a teams background, we all do. I manage a team who could be in bed, in the shed, in the gym - I’d be none the wiser. And what does it matter? You’re still working. I’m so much more productive working from my bed. We need to change the mindset.

You're right because of course God Himself decreed that the entire universe was designed such that work can only possibly happen when sat in an office chair.

Or, just maybe, not everyone's the same and not everyone does the same job so maybe some people find it works for them. It's not something I'd choose to do because I like my bedroom to be a work-free zone (and my back would be absolutely killing me) but I'd not look down on people who've found it works for them. People get paid to do a job. As long as the job gets done what difference does it make if they're sat in bed, on a sofa or in an office chair while doing so?

Llttledrummergirl · 07/02/2025 22:46

No. I need 3 screens so always work at my desk. I do have a foot warmer hot water bottle, weighted blanket and heated massage chair with foot rest so I'm generally snuggled at home.

Why do you put on a background? If it’s ok to work from your bed then what does it matter?

I don’t think many people would be comfortable showing their boss and colleague that they’re in bed and that tells you something.
