Lucy Letby press conference

There is a press conference going on now trying to get Lucy Letby's conviction overturned. From what I read the guilty verdict was sound. All those ill babies dying when she was alone with them. Just a coincidence? Already been refused an appeal.

yet another waste of taxpayer money on this creature. I believe she’s as guilty as sin and where she needs to be.

People thought the Birmingham 6 and Guildford 4 were guilty as sin as well

Likewhatever · 04/02/2025 14:06

I’ve never believed she was guilty, I think she was broken by an appalling workplace environment.

Wow it's all very concerning

Why do all these people want to jump on the case to prove her innocence? What is their gain?

It's not about proving her innocence, it's about questioning whether the evidence was sufficient for a finding of guilt. Any decent person would be worried about the possibility of somebody being convicted of a very serious offence on the basis of inadequate evidence.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 04/02/2025 13:59

The fact she was convicted after 9 month trial, had an expensive taxpayer funded defence, and 2 appeals.

Well a selection of very qualified experts have questioned the evidence that convicted her. Surely we have a duty to investigate that, even if that asks uncomfortable questions of the process that convicted her? There have been miscarriages of justice through history, and the one thing more offensive than crimes going unpunished is punishing the innocent to placate the mob.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 04/02/2025 14:07

Regardless of guilt i think most of us would not like to risk her treating an impaired relative so i hope to god she loses her license to nurse if she’s freed.

TallulahBetty · 04/02/2025 14:05

I know 3 doctors, all of whom think she is guilty. So what now?

The difference of opinions and possible conclusions drawn based on the evidence just illustrates why an appeal and examination of the evidence is so important.

What concerns me is this is going to be yet another stir on social media that gets inflated with loads of uniformed opinions and conspiracy theories, and ultimately reduces people's trust in institutions even more. Watch Musk and Farage jump on this and somehow use it to spin their sorry tales and promote the populist cause. Regardless of the actual truth of the case.

Agreed. Trump will say it's due to the DEI agenda and then it'll be open house to everybody to throw in their ill informed opinions.

We should all care about this case as it's chilling to think of such a possible miscarriage of justice of this enormity.

Hopefully shut up the calls for capital punishment brigade!

Augustus40 · 04/02/2025 14:07

Even if released she would need a whole new identity.

Press conference has finished. I'm still not convinced about the grounds for a retrial. She confessed in a diary type entry found at her flat

She didn’t! She jotted her thoughts down which her GP and therapist advised her to do.

On the basis she was convicted of murders she didn't commit?

I do wonder if there’d br all this examination if she’d been black rather than a pretty white girl,

Don't be so bloody ridiculous. Sick to death of every damned thing on this forum being blamed on racism.

Augustus40 · 04/02/2025 14:10

I bet a better barrister et c wd have helped her get off. I do not know the ins and outs though

Katiesaidthat · 04/02/2025 14:10

As guilty as hell. But like with everything, others will think differently.

GreenClock · 04/02/2025 14:10

What is the general opinion on her defence?

No medical experts, no character witnesses, no other nurses. The plumber testified to the contaminated water. That was it I think.

There was a report on the poor state of the neonatal unit by the Royal College of Paediatricians(??) that the judge did not allow to be presented to the jury. They were also not allowed to refer to other babies who died unattributed to Letby.

I don’t understand the details of the medical
evidence at all (physics GCSE in 1988 hardly qualifies me!) but yeah, the defence seemed sparse to me.

I would trust her to treat me or my relative.
I wouldn’t trust Drs Brearey, Jayaram and the others who worked on the unit, since the panel of experts convened by Shoo Lee consisting of the most qualified people in the world have uncovered a litany of what they describe as basic errors.

I think a lot of people want to believe she's guilty. Not because she is or even because facts point that way (which they don't) but because believing that someone did this and someone is at fault is easier than the probable truth - that these were very very poorly babies and died of natural causes.

Staff shortages too have been suggested

Wow it's all very concerning

Why do all these people want to jump on the case to prove her innocence? What is their gain?

The lead doctor at the press conference was drawn into it because his research work was some of the basis for suggesting Lucy Letby had murdered the babies. He read the evidence and was alarmed that his research paper from 30 years ago had been misinterpreted and the data misused to convict her.

I think it speaks very well of him that he was happy to get involved and tried to set the record straight. He then got together a panel of 14 world expert neonatologists to review the medical evidence.

It’s deeply concerning that you’re even asking this question!

To be fair - you can only show she isn’t guilty beyond reasonable doubt. That isn’t the same as proving innocence.

That is an interesting moral conundrum. I support the reopening of this case if the evidence is in question, but I would also not be happy with her treating me, my relatives or anyone I love. I guess I'm a hypocrite but I suspect I'm not alone.

I can't imagine she'd ever nurse again.

Even in the best case scenario for her of a full exoneration, it would surely be unworkable? There'd always be people still believing she was guilty, plus it would raise difficult issues for the NHS of how these babies died. Then there's the trauma. In her shoes, would you even want to?

So a second 'Press Conference' within a couple of months, that is not even needed. You can Appeal or ask for review without having to have a press conference, and spare families the pain. I feel sorry for the parents and families of the babies.

I've also read that during the press conference, they have got babies details incorrect, both gender and cause of death.

GloriousBlue · 04/02/2025 14:14

With a medical background, I'm all too aware of the failings in the system, the use of scapegoats, the potential for accidental deaths to happen, the under staffing...

From day one I've said I do not believe she's guilty and I continue to believe this, having seen the weak evidence presented.

I see this as a huge miscarriage of justice, and have nothing but sympathy for all involved (except perhaps the doctors and consultants who threw her under the bus).

I do think she'll be released, but the damage has been done to LL and her family.

I appreciate lots don't agree with me, I'm not here for an argument, I'm stating my opinion.
