I went down a youtube rabbit hole last night and ended up listening to loads of 80s Europop. Rock me Amadeus, Voyage Voyage etc. Good times 😁 it got me wondering about other non-English songs that have hit the charts. The Macarena and Gangnam Style I guess? Any other favourites?

My first thought when I saw your title was Voyage Voyage.

But my most played one must be Voila l'Ete, by Les Negresses Vertes.

I came on to say, Zobi La Mouche by Les Negresses Vertes!

Now I know how it's done...

Love Alegría !
@Brefugee - recall DD being a fan of Héroes del Silencio in her Uni days.

But for me ( old gimmer ! ) it’s :

Non ho l’eta - Gigliola Cinquetti
Vado Via - Drupi
Il est trop tard - Georges Moustaki

Mia Foni - Eleftheria Arvanataki ❤️
To tango tis Nefelis - Haris Alexiou ❤️

i loved that, along with the Dance routine

it was a worldwide hit @HoraceCope the Jerusalema challenge, police, nuns, nurses, they were all doing it ! look on youtube, have some fun !

powershowerforanhour · 01/02/2025 21:24

Yes Suo Gan is lovely. Ar Lan Y Mor is sweet and makes me happy and relaxed too.

Cad é sin don té sin (Irish song with a nice rhythm and lyrics that mean the singer should be allowed to quietly and happily get on with living their own life and it's nobody else's business to judge how they should be).

I can only speak a few words of Welsh and Irish but like the sound of these.

i did!
i was really hoping it would catch on here, I showed it to my colleagues in the office, briefly Grin

Tarkan. When you listen you'll know Simarik straight away, but that's actually my least favourite. I sing along with badly made-up words to most of his somgs!

NoraLuka · 01/02/2025 21:34

Baba Inouba by Idir/Mila, this is in Kabyle language, can’t understand a word of it but love the song.

O what a shame lol, not quite the same without your ensemble ha ha

in this house we were obsessed for weeks, it blocked out all other sounds,
like a waterfall…

Brefugee · 01/02/2025 21:44

Watching al the Jérusalem a dances from Those Times makes me a bit teary

BetteDavisChin · 01/02/2025 21:48

'La Mer' by Charles Trenet. When the choir comes in halfway through the song, it's just so uplifting.

The English version 'Beyond the Sea' is a pale imitation.

Jerusalema was a massive hit here in France two summers' ago. I don't know if it was there? It's ridiculously catchy:

I replied to the wrong poster, sorry, read my reply to @HoraceCope
who has also just posted another spine tingler favourite in this house,
music unites us for sure !

Eso lo que tu me das by Jarabe de Palo. Written when Pau Dones knew he was dying of cancer. Makes me cry every time I hear it, even now.

I went to Carnival in Brazil with some friends in the 90s and heard a band called Karnak who sing in Spanish, Portuguese etc etc. I love them but nobody else has heard of them.

Slightly more well known - I love Manu Chao. He sings in French, Spanish and English.

Herewegoagain29 · 01/02/2025 21:52

I hope you'll let me off because she does sing some lines in English but also includes lyrics in Portuguese by Vinicius de Moraes and is a beautiful song,

Shakira & Alejandro Sanz - La Tortura

SlowRider · 01/02/2025 21:59

Mustafa Ceceli - ES (Turkish)

I remember this song being played in a hotel lobby in Istanbul around 15 years ago and it has stuck since, I don't understand a word of it, and like the instrumentals too
