Your favourite songs not in English

I went down a youtube rabbit hole last night and ended up listening to loads of 80s Europop. Rock me Amadeus, Voyage Voyage etc. Good times 😁 it got me wondering about other non-English songs that have hit the charts. The Macarena and Gangnam Style I guess? Any other favourites?

Oh, and if we include classical, I have a thing for the gloomiest lieder. Or Die Erlkonig.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/02/2025 19:42

Kraftwerk, obviously. Wir fahren, fahren, fahren auf der Autobahn...

Got a massive soft spot for Kaze ni Naru from learning to sing and play it for DD when she was younger.

And in a completely different direction, Ca plane Pour Moi.

ETA: figured I'd better drop in some others - Kyrie and Sanctus from Fauré's Reqiuem.

Dragostea din tei - O Zone

Ahhh was gonna say this haha!
Such an upbeat tune

ImpOfDarkness · 01/02/2025 19:54

No idea what they are singing in this one but I imagine it's something like let's get down and dirty 😁

Great thread OP!

I have a total 1990's soft spot for Eros Ramazzotti's 'Piu Bella Cosa', it reminds me of my teenage home exchange in Germany, it was a huge song at the time.

Also love the German artist Sasha's song 'immer wie immer' as it reminds me of my (still) BFF who I met during that exchange.

Pretty much anything by my late brother's teenage crush, the effortlessly cool, chic and beautiful Francoise Hardy;

Her husband was pretty good back then, too;

I love a bit of 60s Europop!

My first thought when I saw your title was Voyage Voyage.

But my most played one must be Voila l'Ete, by Les Negresses Vertes.

Probably 500 miles by the Proclaimers. No idea what they're saying but it's a catchy tune.

Most things by the Belgian force of nature that is Stromae but for pure nostalgia Dragostina Din Tei:

Also Tahir Palali, these two songs. I have no idea if they hit the charts or not, but they are fabulous and hypnotic, I could listen to them over and over. Just don't ask me what they're about, I have no idea!

Not been in the UK charts as far as I know, but Patricia Kaas' music is just beautiful:

We also love this gloriously silly song on our family car mixtape:

I'd also suggest checking out a lot more of Falco's music beyond Rock Me, Amadeus - we have several others of his on the mixtape too. You may not like it at all; but you just might!
