I went down a youtube rabbit hole last night and ended up listening to loads of 80s Europop. Rock me Amadeus, Voyage Voyage etc. Good times 😁 it got me wondering about other non-English songs that have hit the charts. The Macarena and Gangnam Style I guess? Any other favourites?

My first thought when I saw your title was Voyage Voyage.

But my most played one must be Voila l'Ete, by Les Negresses Vertes.

I saw them support New Model Army a few years ago - a billion people on stage and infectious fun

I highly doubt this ever made the charts, but Otto di Catania by Yello.

I loved Yello back in the day. I'm going to have to rake though my collection now!

Ooh you lucky thing.

I have had a couple of their albums for years, but had never seen any videos of them until a couple of years ago - I had no idea there were so many of them!

Suo Gan and other spine tinglers from the Valleys

IpanemaMeisje · 01/02/2025 20:56

So much Brazilian music.

Mas que Nada
Samba de Janerio

These are a couple of the famous ones but all of it really. Was lucky enough to live in Rio with my family for a few years.

Jerusalema was a massive hit here in France two summers' ago. I don't know if it was there? It's ridiculously catchy:

Gasolina, Daddy Yankee

I love Japanese pop,
I recommend Sawano Hiroyuki,
Man with a mission,
Aimer
and my favourite artist Yuko Kanno and her band Seatbelts who wrote the music for Cowboy Bebop (Tank!) and Ghost in the Shell amongst many other things.

Tank! Is fantastic, there are a few live recordings on utube which are ace! Hopefully link works below;

AgnesX · 01/02/2025 21:02

Las Ketchup on the pop side, to Manu Chao which is kind of Latin American (something of theirs was covered recently but I can't remember the name) and our very own Runrig 😁

There are loads of good youngs bands who sing in Gaelic. Don't let the language put you off, the tunes are brilliant!

Tous les Mêmes - Stromae
Miss Modular - Stereolab
Mon esprit part en couilles - Expression Direkt
Due Vite -Marco Mengoni

Good to see plenty of Stromae fans about Smile

HarryVanderspeigle · 01/02/2025 21:13

Non, je ne regrette rien - Edith Piaf

Also, The Cat Empire did a great rendition of L'hotel de Californie. I think it sounds almost better than the English.

Listen by Urban Species is half English a d half French.

It seems all the ones I like are French! Need to listen to more Spanish music.

Laura Pausini 😍 proper melodramatic Italian love songs.
